It’s been almost eight years since James Cameron‘s Avatar broke box office records and became one of the most fascinating topics in modern movie making in terms of legacy and cultural relevancy. That will be put to the test when the four Avatar sequels open in theatres starting in a couple of years, and while many of us doubted that the day would be coming, it’s starting to feel like it’s closer than we think. We’ve all wondered, and now we know! Once, 20th Century Fox expected to release three X-Men films in the calendar year 2016, but there only ended up being two, and at least one of them was a massive box office success. That was Deadpool of course, and long have we waited on news of when we might actually see it’s sequel. Now, we finally know: 2018! And because this is Fox we’re talking about, not only are we going to get another Deadpool next year, we’re going to be getting two other X-Men movies too, and before you ask, one of them isn’t Gambit. To the surprise of possibly no one, except for maybe the executives at 20th Century Fox, it looks like we’re going to have to wait longer for the first of the Avatar sequels. Avatar 2, the first of four sequels in development for James Cameron‘s 2009 blockbuster, was put on the calendar for December 2018 last year, but the man himself is now saying, “Not so fast.” If you thought that even James Cameron could pull together four big budget sequels in a year and a half and have the first one ready for next Christmas, think again. Pretty much every blockbuster movie that comes out nowadays gives you the option to see the film in 3D. Sure, it’s a little more expensive, but sometimes it really makes the movie more enjoyable. Other times, of course, it’s a gimmick for the movie studios to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the public. As we now live in a 3D film world, good or bad, love it or hate it, there’s one person we really can thanks to for it: James Cameron.
Saddle up your Toraks and tie up your reproductive ponytails, the biggest movie of all time is coming back…eventually. Yes, the next installments in the Avatar franchise have been in development for quite some time. Director James Cameron clearly wants them to be perfect, which might be why the sequels have faced more delays than the Dark Crystal sequel. While the plots of the new Avatar movies are still under wraps, James Cameron himself may have finally given us some insight on what they will be about.
Love them or hate them, three more installments of the Avatar franchise are on their way. Tentatively titled Avatar 2, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4, we’ll be seeing them rolling into the theaters one after then other in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Recently, Empire Magazine sat down and had a chat with James Cameron and asked him how the writing process was going. His response was positive and rather strongly worded. You may not be a fan of James Cameron’s Avatar (gods know I found the movie appalling), but the franchise is here to stay, with three sequels lined up for the future. But what would a new movie be without familiar faces?
