The Interwebz is a great place for artists to share their nerdy work, even though the majority of the time it’s a bunch of fuckin’ weird shit. There are a ton of awesome things to behold every day but we’re fuckin’ lazy bastards, so we just put it all together once a week to keep your mojos happy. Because I wasn’t able to get the stock pile up last week, we’ll be having a double feature this week showcasing only the best of the best from the past two weeks! Buckle down, guys, and have your socks at the ready.
We’ll start off this week with some work by Marco D’Alfonso of the Iron Giant being fuckin’ hungry and deciding to nom himself some Optimus Prime.
The Interwebz is a great place for nerdy art and the like. A lot of the time it’s fuckin’ weird shit like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker comparing dicks and shit like that. But there are a lot of awesome things that we see on a daily basis, and we’re lazy nerd bastards so we just round them all up once a week for your nerdgasm glory.
We’ll start off this week with a piece by DeviantArtist 89g, of Batman and Superman going at it. I’ve got my money on Batman!
All right, big changes are coming to DC Universe in an effort to condense their ever-so-convoluted history and attract new readers with a simple and safe, #1. A lot of characters are getting new back stories, different histories, and some might not even exist anymore! Needless to say many, many comic book fans are freaking the fuck out. Unless you only woke up from a coma, like 20 minutes ago, you haven’t heard the apocalyptic news that DC is rebooting their universe. Well, reboot might not be a fair word. Relaunch? Revamp? Shake-up? Slight alteration of everything just enough to piss off your die-hard fans? Yeah, it’s something like that.
Of course this isn’t the only time DC decided change was needed. There’s a reason we refer to certain eras in comics as ‘golden’ or ‘silver’, they predominately refer to differences in characters and stories as they reflect their time period. We’re entering a new age now and it’s exciting, thrilling and a little disconcerting.
Listed here, all in one handy post is every new #1 title beginning in September in the post-Flashpoint DCU. Their covers, their quick solicits and a few snarky comments from myself. I admit now I am no DC expert, just a fan. And there are going to be some books I’ll have little to say about, others I could probably devote an entire post to, but I’ll try an keep ’em short. If I don’t share the same concerns you do about a title or I just say little about your favorite new book please, please, please share your thoughts and feel free to contradict me in the comments section. On to the books!
JUSTICE LEAGUE #1
Written by GEOFF JOHNS, art and cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS.
On sale AUGUST 31 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US RATED T • Combo pack edition: $4.99 US
Comics superstars Geoff Johns and Jim Lee make history! In a universe where super heroes are strange and new, Batman has discovered a dark evil that requires him to unite the World Greatest Heroes! This spectacular debut issue is also offered as a special combo pack edition, polybagged with a redemption code for a digital download of the issue.
I think this sounds solid. We’re going to be introduced to our favorite heroes as younger, more inexperienced people and with the team of Johns and Lee, it’ll rock. They want to put their best foot forward with this book, this’ll be the title that introduces new fans to the core of DCU. It’s great to see Cyborg being included in such an iconic group, too. They’re starting out strong with their whole plan to diversify the DCU. We’ll just see how long that plan continues…
You really gotta hand it to DC comics. I mean honestly, they’ve got some balls!
I was never a big DC fan, but pretty much stopped reading them all together as I grew up. Batman “dying” caught my interest a few years back, same with the Green Lantern relaunch, but the greater DC continuity really meant nothing to me.
But, DC‘s latest event, Flashpoint, really began to interest me. And, when I learned that the fallout from that would re-launch every single DC title … I gotta say, I was intrigued.
But this is becoming worrisome, because how do you deal with the big three: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman? Because if there is one cardinal rule, it is this: You do NOT mess with your big heroes continuity! Remember when Marvel superhero Spider-Man’s marriage fell apart from a deal with the devil, fans hated that so much more than any gripes about Mary-Jane as a character. It took years for Spider-Man to crawl out of that hole and has only just recently regained some of its lost shimmer.
Well, today we were given a glimpse behind what is up for Batman, and fans are very concerned. But we’ll get to those in a moment, after the less provocative announcements.
First off is the new Catwoman #1,
Meet Catwoman. She’s addicted to the night. Addicted to shiny objects. Addicted to Batman. Most of all, Catwoman is addicted to danger. She can’t help herself, and the truth is – she doesn’t want to. She’s good at being bad, and very bad at being good.
Also on the docket is a new line-up for Birds of Prey, starring Black Canary, Katana, Poison Ivy and one other as-yet unnamed female character.
Now on to the controversial news: Dick Grayson (former Robin and Nightwing, but current Batman) will be going back to being Nightwing, Bruce Wayne will once again pick up the mantle of Batman (teaming up with his son, Damien Wayne, as the new Robin)… but most shockingly of all?
Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl and now Oracle, will once again become Batgirl! For those of you who are not aware, Barbara was confined to a wheelchair many years back after the Joker shot her, so what does DC have in store? Well, that’s the thing. We really don’t know, but fans re foaming at the mouth of this huge change to continuity.
Barbara was a long-standing figure of diversity in the comics, as she became happy with her life in a wheelchair, which is very uncommon in comics. Even Batman couldn’t face that after his back was broken by Bane.
So, we shall have to wait and see what happens. But, what do you think? Are you happy with the re-launch idea and Barbara Gordon returning as Batgirl?
There’s been quite a bit of upheaval in Gotham over the last year or so, particularly where Bats are concerned. Bruce Wayne is no longer the only Batman, in fact he’s been recruiting a whole league of them in Batman Inc. Dick Grayson, former boy wonder became the Batman in Gotham after Bruce died…err was lost in time…err became an evil time bomb. Eh, comics are confusing. Anyway with a new Batman came a new Robin, and after that a new Batgirl. So there are lots of new faces in the Bat family recently.
But there’s one missing, or maybe I should rephrase it to read there’s one I’m missing. Batwoman, Kate Kane, the former marine, kick-ass chick whose not afraid to say she loves the ladies. She’s fierce, passionate and a fantastic addition to the Bat family, even if she’s not been officially sanctioned by the big Bat himself. So where can you catch her daring adventures month to month? Well, you can’t. Her new self-titled series has been delayed, again. Readers were given a preview with Batwoman #0 released back in November of last year with the series to start in February. Then it was pushed to April and you might have noticed ads in your DC books saying this. Well, now the series has been pushed back to September. Can’t a girl catch a break in this man-bat world?
J.H. Williams III who beautifully illustrated Batwoman during her stint in Detective Comics (written by Greg Rucka) is working on both the art and story for the new book and has commented on the delays before,
Well, its obvious to many that Batwoman’s release has been pushed back yet again. This was not our choice, and as to why, I’m not at liberty to really discuss. So the release may be farther away now, but be assured that work is still commencing. The upside to a later release means that gives us plenty of time to get a lot of issues done.
And they have been working really hard. The team of Williams, Haden Blackman and Amy Reader are well through the first arc and are already beginning a second. Now with a push back to September they’ll probably have a year’s worth of comics completed before we can read a single one!
Reader is who confirmed the new start date of September at WonderCon this passed weekend. She says the reasoning for the delay this time is to allow DC to give the Batwoman series a big promotional push. Dan Didio, co-publisher of DC confirmed this. DC does have a lot of new books coming out this summer with the newest crossover event, Flashpoint beginning. But they’ve been planning Flashpoint for a long time and I find it hard to believe they couldn’t have worked Batwoman around this.
I hate to say this but I think Batwoman’s getting screwed. Her run on Detective Comics is what brought me to my local comic book store. Her stories are what made me start reading other Bat-books and then other DC books. I know a lot of other comic book fans have been eagerly anticipating this book and it sucks having to wait so long for series we’ve been craving since Rucka left DC. She’s also a really important character socially. She is one of DC’s few openly gay characters. She’s one of the few DC women to not fit the mold of buxom and blonde. She’s also one of the few females to not bear the moniker ‘girl’. She’s a woman, a Bat-woman. Unlike so many of the other women in DC who are labeled girls while obviously being quite mature. Power Girl, Supergirl, Batgirl. She’s up there with Wonder Woman as one of the few chicks who are allowed to stand toe to toe with the guys.
So no Batwoman until September. All right fine, but I really want an awesome promotion for when the series does begin. I’m talking posters and t-shirts, maybe some special edition covers, I want it all DC because you’re making us wait.
