‘Beetlejuice 2′ Scribe Reveals Plans, Movie Will Be Light On Beetlejuice

With Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter finished and floundering at the box office (reviewed here), writer/creator Seth Grahame-Smith is off to his next project, the much rumored and still up in the air sequel to 1988′s Beetlejuice. Bleeding Cool had a chance to needle the writer for some details, and he delivered. While it is in development right now,  Grahame-Smith stressed that the movie is ‘just theoretical right now,’ so here’s whats happening, theoretically.

If we come up with nothing but shit then we’re not going to do it. Beetlejuice, I think, is too important to too many people, myself included, and Tim (Burton), and Michael Keaton, to do a sequel just for the sake of it, because we’d think it would be commercial. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time. I still have the original 1988 poster in my office, framed, above my desk. It was an important and seminal movie for me. I want to find a way, so badly, to get it right, but I am so absolutely horrified at the thought of getting it wrong that we’re taking our time and being really careful about it. Though I have talked to Tim quite a bit about it, and I have talked to Michael quite a bit.

I’m liking where this is going already, he sounds like he loves the property and will treat it right. A needles sequel for nostalgia will do no one any good.

More revealing details after the jump.

Will Depp Be There When the ‘Juice Gets Loose Again?

Take this with a grain of salt, but in the below video frequent collaborators Johnny Depp and Tim Burton wax on the possibility of Depp appearing in the gaining momentum Beetlejuice 2. The original Beetlejuice predated Burton’s partnership with Depp, but considering that this coming Friday’s release of Dark Shadows marks their eighth time working together, is it even possible for Burton to work without Depp anymore?

Who knows? Let’s watch the video.

So what kind of part might Johnny Depp play in Beetlejuice 2? Maybe he’ll be Beetlejuice’s brother, or the dad of a new family that moves into the Maitland house. Anyway, let’s hold all guess until screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith turns in at least one draft of the script.

Grahame-Smith Says ‘Beetlejuice 2′ Will Be a “True Sequel”

One of the big pieces of news out of Wondercon this weekend was the new trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but the original author behind that project has his sights set on future projects, and he discussed one of the biggest ones while at the ALVH panel in Anaheim: Beetlejuice 2.

Seth Grahame-Smith talked to Collider about some of the ideas he was playing with for sequel, including his timeline for putting pen to paper for the script. “Beetlejuice is hopefully the third thing I’m gonna write this year,” he said. “I’ve met with Tim [Burton] about it, I’ve met with Michael Keaton about it. There’s a lot of goodwill to want to do it from both of those guys; Tim from a producing aspect and Michael from returning to the character. Again, it’s on me. It’s whether or not I can come up with a script that’s worthy of them jumping back in.”

And if they do jump back in, expect the sequel to take place in “real time,” meaning that the sequel will take place 26-27 years after the original. Beetlejuice himself, however, will be more or or less the same because “time means nothing in the afterlife, but the world outside is a different story.”

As for storyline, and what the movie might be about, Grahame-Smith says, he right now only has a “rough idea of what it’s gonna be.”

“The thing that Tim and Michael and I all agree on, and is most important for me is, I don’t wanna be the guy that destroys the legacy and the memory of the first film; I would rather die,” he says. “I would rather just not make it, I’d rather just throw the whole thing away than make something that pays no respect and doesn’t live up even close to the legacy of the first film.”

Beetlejuice 2 is still far from even pre-production, but expect to hear Grahame-Smith talk more about it when he starts promoting his two big summer movies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dark Shadows later this spring.

25 Years Later – ‘Beetlejuice 2′ Is A Top Priority

In other Tim Burton news coming out today we’re learning that a sequel to one of filmmaker’s first hits, Beetlejuice, is at the top of someone’s to-do list, and it’s none other than the man that portrayed the titular ghoul himself, Michael Keaton.

While being interviewed by STYD, Seth Grahame-Smith, author of the book by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and screenwriter of Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation, talked about a meeting he had with Keaton about getting another Beetlejuice movie in front of the cameras.

We talked for a couple of hours and talked about big picture stuff.  It’s a priority for Warner Bros. It’s a priority for Tim.

Apparently, Keaton’s been chomping at the bit to get going on another Beetlejuice, and now it seems he’s closer than ever. How big are his expectations?

Huge, he’s been wanting to do it for 20 years and he’ll talk to anybody about it who will listen. I really told him, I have a huge reverence for Tim and a huge reverence for that film in general.  I don’t think we should do it if we shit on the legacy.  He agrees.  So, right now, it remains to be seen, I have a couple of story ideas, but we’re very early out.

For years, there’s been the often rumored about Beetlejuice: Hawaiian Style project, but it  never seemed to get past the provocative title stage. So could an actual, factual Beetlejuice sequel truly now be in the making? Hopefully, they’ll get rolling soon before Keaton himself really does become a ghost.

‘Beetlejuice 2′ Won’t Happen Without Michael Keaton

A while back it was announced that writer/producer duo David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith were working on a sequel to Tim Burton‘s 1988 comedy, Beetlejuice. Today, EW reports that the twosome  have just gotten Burton’s blessing. However, they will not move forward until they convince Michael Keaton to return for the title role.

“When Warner Bros. came to us about it, we said the only way we’d do it if we got Tim [Burton's] blessing and involvement, and we got that,” says Grahame-Smith, “and the star of the movie has to be Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and it’s a true continuation 26 years later. Not just throwing him in as a cameo going, ‘Hey, it’s me. I endorse this movie.’ We’re not there yet, because we don’t have a film to present to him.”

Michael Keaton who has done a whole lot of nothing as of late, has said, in interviews that he would do a sequel in a heartbeat. Specifically,  “Absolutely, that’s the one thing I’d love to do again.” So, he’s fucking game. As for the rest of the cast, I don’t see how they can get the back in, especially since Winona Ryder is all grown up and probably too busy shoplifting to do another Beetlejuice…

Like Ghostbusters 3, Beetlejuice 2 would be a decade too late. Let it lie. If it does happen, keep Burton away from it – If you haven’t made a good movie in over 10 years then you’re useless. Also, there are good actors out there other than Johnny Depp.

Seth Grahame-Smith Might be Writing a Sequel to ‘Beetlejuice’ – What!?

He’s the author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which are both being adapted for film. He’s also worked on the script for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows and now, Seth Grahame-Smith might be writing a sequel to Beetlejuice for Warner Bros. with KatzSmith partner David Katzenberg. Um, what!?

It’s true! Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg have scored a two-year first-look deal with Warner Bros. and the first project they’re looking to do is a sequel to Burton’ 1988 film. Not wanting to remake the film, WB is hoping to “reboot it by advancing the storyline of the original.”

Here’s what Grahame-Smith had to say about the new deal,

We want to make big movies based on big ideas and inspired by the comedies we grew up loving. The thing we like about Bad Robot and Imagine is that they are never pigeonholed because they do good work across a broad spectrum. We want to slowly grow into a company that follows in those footsteps.

And Katzenberg,

We pride ourselves on coming up with a lot of our own ideas; about 90% of the projects we’ve generated in film and TV are ones we created and developed. The studio will help us bring our ideas to the finish line.

So, a sequel to Beetlejuice. Not gonna lie, this idea scares the shit out of me. I appreciate they’re acknowledging a remake would be terrible, but a continuation without Burton’s involvement sounds pretty scary, too. I’ve liked Grahame-Smith’s work, but whenever someone new touches a classic it’s worrisome.

What do you guys think? Is the dude who made including zombies and vampires in everything popular the right choice for a new Beetlejuice?

Glenn Shadix, Charactor Actor of Beetlejuice, Dead at 58.

OthoBeetlejuice(Post by nerdbastards contributor Nick Bungay- Twitter @NickBungay)

On September 7th, 2010, the world has lost yet another veteran actor. Glenn Shadix, character actor for such films as Beetlejuice (Ortho), Heathers (Father Ripper), and Associate Bob in Demolition Man, died in his home in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 58. The early reports are saying that the  wheelchair-bound Shadix died from a head injury obtained in a fall.

“In his youth, Shadix struggled to come to grips with his homosexuality, even partaking in “ex-gay shock therapy” at the age of 17, a harrowing ordeal he later described. A suicide attempt, however, led his family to accept his sexuality and for the young man to movie on with his life”

Glen had a lot of guts to come out at 17 years old, in a time when disco was on the rise and gay issue were neither discussed or even acknowledged. It must have been heel living in a time where being gay was a secret bigger than ‘Deep Throat’ in the Watergate scandal. At least he came to terms with who he was and benefited from that with his acting prowess.

The actor’s sister, Susan Gagne, told the newspaper ‘The Associated Press’ that he appeared to have fallen while in his wheelchair (his main method of moving around) and hit his head in his kitchen. Shadix’s website says a memorial is being held this Saturday in Birmingham.

Also, while Glen may now be gone to a better place a surprising youtube video has surfaced involving a young man claiming to be Shadix’s friend during his final months (now removed from youtube by the man). Sharing a voicemail left by a then intoxicated Shadix the night before his death. The video also has this individual claiming Glenn was romantically interested in him, even though he’s straight. Nobody may ever no if any of this is true but whatever happened was Glenn’s choice.

Glenn Shadix was an actor, a stage performer but most importantly he was himself. Doing everything from the mayor of Halloween town in ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas‘ to Senator Nado in the ‘Planet of the Apes‘ remake. Openly Gay, always an individual, Glenn Shadix will be missed by everyone, no matter who they are.

Safe Journey buddy.
