Daleks

Welcome to another edition of Ask the Bastards, the weekly feature where you the readers get to grill us, the Nerd Bastards staff, on any nerdy topic you want. This week we discuss our own inherent nerdiness, Sarah shares some memories of Dragon*Con, we talk about Imperial Walkers and finally get around to the touchy, touchy subject of Before Watchmen.

Each and every week we scour the Internet for nothing but the best in nerd based art. We leave no digital stone unturned, we poke and prod every net based nook and cranny. Why? Because we love you, and we love to bring you weekly Nerd Art Dumps.

Get a load of these jewels Batman. Gotham’s Queen of crime may have looked awesome in the live-action Dark Knight Rises, but this slightly alternate version by Ivangod may have the big screen beat. Thankfully nothing was stolen at the moment of this drawing – except our adoration. [Deviant Art]

Hit the jump for Shaun of the Dead, Doctor Doom, Lego Legend of Zelda and MOAR!

Good news for attendees of the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival at the end of August because they’ll be among the first to see the season 7 premiere of Doctor Who, “Asylum of the Daleks.” Written by showrunner Steven Moffat, the episode is said to feature “every Dalek ever” and if it doesn’t live up to the tease than Moffat will be on hand after the screening to receive criticism (or maybe praise).

Of course, Moffat is doubling down on praise, and he has this follow-on tease for all y’all:

“The Daleks are coming back and they’re worse than ever. Just you wait until you see what they’re going to do.”

To double down on Moffat’s double down, Who executive producer Caroline Skinner told BBC’s official Doctor Who Website the following:

“This is an epic Dalek adventure that kicks off the new series in explosive style! If you think you know all there is to know about the Daleks, think again…  [The episode will feature] every kind of Dalek ever faced by the Time Lord – including the legendary Special Weapons Dalek.”

Now my relationship with Doctor Who doesn’t exactly go back all 50 years, so I’m not sure what it means that there’s a legendary “Special Weapons Dalek,” but on the other hand that’s definitely something you want to have in your back pocket when you’re in a place called the “Asylum of the Daleks.”

For other series 7 spoilers, or at least the ones that have been pieced together so far, Screenrant has the complete breakdown:

  • This season will consist of 14 episodes split between Autumn 2012 and Spring 2013.
  • The second episode of this season – partly set in ancient Egypt – will feature Queen Nefertiti  and Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films) as Rory’s dad.
  • The third episode will have a “Wild West” theme.
  • Episode five will partially be set in Manhattan and feature the return of the Weeping Angels and River Song (YES!), plus the “final” departure of Amy and Rory (NO!).
  • The series will break until Christmas.
  • The Christmas special will written by Moffat and feature the debut of The Doctor’s new companion played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. The new companion will be very different from previous companions and is “going to be a shock.
  • The remaining episodes will air in spring 2013 and will contain the big 50th anniversary episode, which is still very hush-hush but is said to feature many familiar faces.
  • UNIT and the Ood will both appear this season.
  • Moffat has created new villains that he says are his “scariest yet.”
  • Confirmed  guest stars include David Gyasi, Rupert Graves, David Bradley, Riann Steele (as Queen Nefertiti) in Episode 2, Ben Browder, Adrian Scarborough, Garrick Hagon, Steven Berkoff, Ruthie Henshall, Jemma Redgrave, Michael McShan, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine, David Warner, and Liam Cunningham.
  • Moffat also teased: “If we did a UNIT story, would Martha [the Tenth Doctor’s second companion] be there?”

Stay tuned for more Who news in the coming weeks. Especially with Comic Con coming up.

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. We already knew the Daleks would return in season seven of Doctor Who and with that teaser trailer released months ago we had reason to believe it would be in the season opener. Now it’s confirmed with the announcement the first episode of season will be titled, “Asylum of the Daleks.”

Hmm, we’ve already seen what happens when Daleks go mad, in this episode do they visit a home for insane Daleks? I don’t know, maybe, but the Great Wizard Steven Moffat confirmed with the BBC, “the adventure will feature every kind of Dalek ever faced by the Time Lord – including the legendary Special Weapons Dalek!”

Whoa–! That’s a lot of Daleks.

But y’know, asylum also refers to protection. Could the “Asylum” be referring to a place where the Daleks go to feel safe. But from who? Oh right, The Doctor! The destroyer of worlds.

Executive Producer Caro Skinner didn’t add much in the way of clarification or detail, but she had this to say of the episode,

This is an epic Dalek adventure that kicks off the new series in explosive style! If you think you know all there is to know about the Daleks, think again…

No matter what, I think we can expect to be in for one of hell of show, Moffat and co. will deliver, and I’m hoping season seven will be their best yet. What do you guys think we’ll be seeing in, “Asylum of the Daleks”?

Season seven of Doctor Who is so close you can almost taste it! I expect it tastes quite a bit like fish fingers and custard. Returning in the fall with no official date set yet, we’re expecting to see the TARDIS crew either late August or early September. Still, it’s that close, guys! We’ve made is through most of the wait already.

When the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), and Rory (Arthur Darville) come back what new dangers will they be facing? Daleks and divorce! Or so the rumors go. What follows is pretty spoilery so if you’d like to remain pristine and clean about season seven, stop now. We’ll see you in the fall.

Here’s the most recent report from Doctor Who TV,

The pre-title sequence of the opener will reportedly see both Amy and Rory kidnapped by a pair of mysterious characters, believed to be working for the Daleks.

One of them, Cassandra (played by Naomi Ryan), is sent to get Amy. Amy is now a full-time model and is doing a photoshoot when she is taken.

Another person, who is posing as a London bus driver, teleports Rory away when he gets on. Rory is on his way to the solicitor to file for divorce at the time.

Cassandra and the bus driver both appear to be human but transform into something else just before they take The Ponds…

Who could be working with the Daleks? And divorce papers! Oh my. I knew the end was going to be a tragic one for The Ponds but I’d hate to imagine they won’t be facing it together.

What are your hopes for the next season of Doctor Who?

Yeovil, south Somerset (that’s in the UK), saw a recent invasion of malevolent aliens, though not of type one might expect.  Instead of blowing things up or establishing a new Imperial colony, Daleks and Stormtroopers chose to help out the local hospitals – very uncharacteristic indeed.

YeoLeisurePark, in a celebration marking their 10th anniversary, set up a Doctor Who-themed event to benefit St. Margaret’s Hospice – a hospital devoted to helping those diagnosed with terminal illnesses.  This 6-hour Doctor Who extravaganza featured everything from Cybermen to Sontarans, with the highlight of the day being a race between wee-sized remote-controlled Daleks.

In addition to the race, the event featured a 5k charity run and a laser display, as well a chance for people to get up-close-and-personal with their favorite Doctor Who villains.  Luckily, no exterminations or deletions were reported.

Not to be outdone by their British-developed counterparts, a few days later the 501st UK Garrison Star Wars group showed up to their own charity event.  This one was aimed at raising money for Yeovil Hospital’s Flying Colours Appeal, an initiative to help the Women’s Health and Maternity Unit at the hospital.  Considering this is a maternity unit, there is likely an ulterior motive involved, such as training more soldiers for the Empire.

Residents of Yeovil must have certainly had an interesting time the last few days, what with all the alien activity in town.  No doubt they also breathed a sigh of relief when the aliens finally made their way off-planet without killing anyone.

Thanks to The Mary Sue for sourcing us this one.
