Daleks

Happening right now is the very first Official Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff, Wales, which as you should know is where much of the filming for BBC‘s insanely popular sci-fi series takes place. Those attending are surely having one hell of an awesome weekend and all of us not in Wales are terribly jealous. Especially when we learned they’d been given an early sneak peak at a trailer for the first episode of season seven returning in the fall.

Thanks to this brave soul who uploaded a bootleg of the video, we can share in some of the excitement, too. No clue how long the video will remain available, so quick, watch it!

This trailer matches exactly with what we saw them filming in Spain and it is indeed a Western adventure. Did you pick up on any Dalek references in the dialogue? I think I did and while it is pretty hard to hear exactly what’s being said it might be a clue those rumors about visiting the ruins of Skaro are true.

What d’ya think? I’m kind of surprised they’ve got a trailer already, but I’m not complaining. Apparently an official version will be released on Monday, stay tuned!

Classic Daleks to Return (Again) in Doctor Who

500x_47

Even though the shiny new Daleks destroyed their predecessors in Doctor Who‘s fifth series episode “Victory of the Daleks” we haven’t seen the last of the classic Daleks, promises showrunner Steven Moffat.

The new Doctor Who Brilliant Book quotes Moffat as saying:

The fact is, we’re not going to lose the old Daleks. We’re keeping them. They’re coming back. We’ll just use them all at once, and have different ranks. All I’ve done is give the Daleks an officer class.

So in other words “We can’t afford to throw out the old props”.

I love the Daleks, I really do. But, come on now. These new Skittle colored Daleks? Seriously, WTF fuck? Ya, ya I know they’re reminiscent of the colored Daleks in the Peter Cushing Dalek movies, but classic bronze is so much more threatening.

Color or no color, I can’t help but feel like I’m taking them less seriously nowadays when they kept being just on the virge of coming back, and then getting wiped out, then coming back again. Make them a constant threat, rather than the leftovers of one. Or, even better. Don’t keep bringing them back. At-least not for several  years. They are classic villains that have grown less interesting through overexposure. Give it a break.

Found: One Dalek, Doctor Still Missing

dalek-550x331

The Dalek, the unstoppable killing machine and Doctor Who’s greatest enemy, you can now add deactivated to it’s repertoire of skills. Thanks to students at West Exe Learning Center in St. Thomas, England, a long lost Dalek was found inside their school (studying perhaps). Manager of the building, Sue Wiley, has not wanted it restored and instead hastily notified police. In response to why she decided not to restore the Doctor Who replica Ms. Wiley replied:

“We’d like to return him to his owner if possible because he’s taking up quite a lot of room and is living in a cupboard at the moment.”

Living a cupboard at the moment, stick this piece of british nerd history at your front gate for everyone to see. As returning it to the owner, hasn’t this biddy ever heard of the finder’s keeper’s rule. The police stated that there has been no reports of missing or stolen Dalek in the area(they self-destruct of course).

“He’s a little bit damaged here and there, but he’s still got to be worth hundreds” Sue Wiley also included.

If you or anyone you know is missing a Dalek or your’s just so happened to float away from home, contact the St. Thomas police department. Just don’t give any information to the whereabouts of a blue police box, you might get your call transferred to Torchwood.

OK, the Daleks from Doctor Who are badass. They exterminate anything and everything thats not of their kind. And, those voices of theirs, high pitch, monotone and mechanical. These guys are some scary ass mother fuckers, but GREATEST monsters of Science Fiction?  Well, that’s what a poll from SFX magazine says. 8,000 sci-fi fans took park of survey to determine the best Monsters, Supernatural Beings and Fantasy Creatures as part of the mag’s 200th issue celebration. And, apparently Daleks took the top spot over Star Trek‘s Borg, Godzilla and even the Aliens from the Alien films!

Here’s how the results played out:

1. The Daleks (Doctor Who)
2. Lorne (Angel)
3. Aliens (the Alien franchise)
4. Death (Discworld)
5. Gollum (The Lord of the Rings)
6. The Shadows (Babylon 5)
7. Gizmo (Gremlins)
8. The Thing (The Thing)
9. Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia)
10. Predators (the Predator franchise)
11. The Borg (Star Trek)
12. Pilot (Farscape)
13. The Cybermen (Doctor Who)
14. Godzilla (Godzilla)
15. Ludo (Labyrinth)
16. Pinhead (Hellraiser)
17. Nibbler (Futurama)
18. The Great Dragon (Merlin)
19. Frankenstein’s monster (Frankenstein)
20. Slimer (Ghostbusters)

If I may go out on a limb and say this is the stupiest list ever. OMIGOD is it such an EPIC FAIL!.  Alsan, FAIL. Pilot, FAIL. The Great Dragon, FAIL. None One but two Doctor Who Characters, FAIL. And as much as I love Lorne he’s a FAIL too. Seriously, not one creature from Star Wars made it to the top 20? That in itself makes this an absolutley awful list.

What do you think? Who do you think should have made the the list? Who do you think should not be on the list?

Here at nerdbastards we love everything in nerd pop culture (obviously). So it makes sense that when someone mashes together two separate pop culture things, for the purpose of LOLz, we go nuts over it. Well, consider us officially crazy because we have just lost our shit over this lastest mashup. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Daleks takes the two of the greatest things to come out of British Science fiction and makes for one amusing, informational video.
