More information has been released about David Goyer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Neil Gaimans‘ feature film adaptation of the comic book series Sandman. Now closer to production than ever, the project has been described by Gordon-Levitt as a complicated adaptation, but mind-blowingly awesome. Gaiman’s name may be the first one you think of when you reminisce about Sandman, but Joe Simon and Jack Kirby were actually the creators of the comic series. Gaiman’s adaptation is what propelled it into the cult classic that it is today. The comic arc ran from January 1989 to March 1996, with 75+ issues. Moves have been being made by WB to make it into a movie since 1996, and it seems it might finally be time for the dream to become a reality! (more…)

After Warner Bros. announced that New Line Cinema would be handling all the DC Comics Vertigo titles development back in June, many have wondered which titles would get the big screen treatment. At the time of that announcement, Warner passed New Line the already in production Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Sandman film. Word is making the Internet rounds that Tom Hardy ( Mad Max: Fury Road, Warrior) has joined the 100 Bullets team as a producer and is in talks to take a starring role. (more…)

Superman Prequel ‘Krypton’ Is On Its Way

Krypton 2

Marvel may have DC ducking and diving in the cinematic boxing ring but when it comes to the small screen, DC has decided that this is the season to finally deal a solid blow in the clash of the comic book titans.  The Flash hit the ground running and is already a fan favorite over at CW, with iZombie set to join the network very soon, Gotham took a minute to get there but the Batman television prequel series has become a solid fixture over at FOX, and plans for Supergirl, Teen Titans, Lucifer, and Static Shock series’ are well underway.  All of this is, of course, in addition to CW’s wildly popular Arrow, which just started on its third season.  So, what’s next for DC?  Well, if Bleeding Cool has it right, it looks like fans may next be visiting the birthplace of Kal-El, Krypton. The annual Television Critics Association summer panel is currently underway in L.A. It’s a chance for networks and cable channels to show off their wares for the fall season, introduce new shows and start building the hype for September and October premieres. As I’m sure you already know (you’re reading a website called Nerd Bastards after all), there are an inordinate number comic book based TV series debuting this TV season, and one of them is NBC’s Constantine. Already the butt of some controversy (for comic fans), the cast and crew of the show were definitely in the hot seat as the NBC portion of the TCA got underway. (more…)

Stan The Man Responds to Goyer’s She-Hulk Comments

88_SheHulk

Hey! Comic nerds! Did anything, I don’t know, incidiary happen on the internet in the last 24 hours? Haha. I’m kidding of course. By now you will have surely heard about David Goyer‘s alleged smack talk about She-Hulk in the midst of an all-star screenwriters panel on a live edition of John August’s ScriptNotes podcast. In no uncertain terms, Goyer said that She-Hulk was as a sexed up male fantasy whose sole function was to be a girl only the Hulk could, ahem, love. Leaving aside the ickiness of She-Hulk being Man-Hulk’s cousin and everything, a lot of people are of the opinion that Goyer’s comments are off the mark, and one of them is She-Hulk’s co-creator Stan “The Man” Lee. Fans are like protective parents sitting at their daughter’s wedding reception; happy to see their child going off on a new adventure, but in a well hidden corner of their minds they’re always secretly convinced that their kid just won’t be as protected and as loved by this new person. They were ours before they were theirs. We will always have that attachment, and so when that day comes that this new person wants to take our kids away, it hits us hard.

I am not allowed to watch Father of the Bride 2 while writing an article ever again. (more…)

The ‘Sandman’ Movie Has Found Its Writer

sandman

Ever since Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced his intention to turn Neil Gaiman’s much-loved Sandman series into a movie, fans (myself included) have been sitting on the fence. The story of Sandman is incredibly complex and even the enthusiasm of Gordon-Levitt may mean very little if they don’t have the right people working behind the scenes to make the movie as true to its source material as possible. Now, the first piece of the Sandman puzzle has been found. It looks like Jack Thorne will be the one to write the script. (more…)
