DC Extended Universe

We’ve seen countless iterations of Batman’s greatest rogue, The Joker. We’ve seen Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman, Heath Ledger in the Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and recently Jared Leto in Suicide Squad (and the upcoming Gotham City Sirens movie). Of course, there’s the OG from the Adam West series, Caesar Romero and countless voice actors for various DC animated movies (Mark Hamill remains king though!). The Joker is without a doubt one of the most fascinating characters throughout comic book history. However, we really haven’t learned much of his origin or his history. Until now…

With San Diego Comic Con coming up this weekend, it’s been a quiet couple of days for comic book movie news. Now, as per usual, Warner Bros. will be having a panel on Saturday in Hall H, which, following up on their presentation last year that launched Wonder Woman and Justice League to great acclaim, is likely going to have a lot of eyes on it in eager anticipation. Sure, there’s likely going to be a Justice League trailer, and maybe some Aquaman footage, but there will also likely be an announcement about future DC Extended Universe movies. To wit… (more…)

Later on this year, we will see the next installment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Justice League. In the aftermath of Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne will be gathering various metahumans to form a team to deal with an upcoming threat. As in most cinematic universe films, characters from previous films will be continuing their roles. We can count on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman of course. In addition, we will be meeting new characters that will join the Justice League like Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. That pretty much covers the superheroes, but what about the supporting players. The first two DCEU movies have dealt primarily in Metropolis, so many of the supporting characters were from Superman lore.

The upcoming Green Lantern Corps film set to release in 2020 is scouting for its leading man. The rumor mill has pushed out the shortlist for possible contenders to take on the role of the Emerald Crusader. As we mentioned in a previous piece about the film, there hasn’t been much released about what we can expect other than the main characters will be the Green Lanterns of Earth: Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner. This morning, The Wrap, dropped some names for who might take on the role and a surprising top of the list has a little experience with the character.

When Warner Bros made Man of Steel, it was supposed to be the beginning of a DC cinematic universe. Much like Marvel has been crushing it with their cinematic universe, DC was going to start making legit superhero films. Unfortunately, DC has been going through some growing pains in building their cinematic universe. While their films have been commercially successful, many disagree about the quality of the films. While some have disliked the story or editing, many agree that the films were just too “dark.” In Man of Steel, we had a 9/11-esque battle with massive collateral damage.  In Batman v Superman, Batman was a murder-prone.  While trying to differentiate themselves from the sunnier Marvel films, DC might have taken it a step too far. Needless to say, there’s a need for some course correction.

Greg Berlanti, the producer who has already given us superhero hits like Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl is ready to take his talents once again to the big screen. Although his last superhero film Green Lantern was a critical and commercial dud, he’s gotten enough street cred to give it another try. Berlanti is going to develop a film based on the Booster Gold character from DC comics. Booster Gold although has no superpowers, wears a special suit that gives him superhuman abilities as well as other equipment from the future. The film is currently in development with Warner Bros and will have Zack Stentz attached as the screenwriter and Berlanti as the director. With such an obscure character that only hardcore fans know, many are wondering how this character will fit into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Could Booster get involved with the Justice League somewhere down the line?

Aquaman

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is starting to kick into high gear.  Already three movies in the can, the cinematic universe is now kicking into overdrive.  With the just released Suicide Squad making record-breaking numbers, and both Wonder Woman and Justice League coming next year, Warner Bros is now looking forward to the solo adventures of a few of their Justice League members, including Aquaman.  The 2018 film will be directed by James Wan and star Jason Momoa.  While little is known about the actual plot of the film, we now know who Arthur Curry will face off against.

SUICIDE SQUAD

Although Suicide Squad was not a hit with the critics, the film had an astounding opening weekend. The critically-panned film had a record-setting opening weekend of $132 million. Audience reactions have been somewhat mixed, but with such a strong opening weekend, it’ no surprise that there is already talk of a sequel surrounding the bad guys of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The cast is already signed for multi-film commitments, so who knows what will happen in a potential sequel. Director David Ayer has a few ideas as well.

Suicide Squad is not off to a great start. The antihero film focusing on Task Force X has not been the recipient of great reviews. Currently holding a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it looks like the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is continuing the trend from Batman v Superman and is outputting a product that many do not like. Most of the reviews have been mixed-to-negative for what was hoping to save a pretty bland summer blockbuster season. However, all is not lost of the anticipated film.
