Marvel Studios has long been a big presence at San Diego Comic Con, but in the last several years they’ve had to specialize. You can’t have one, big Marvel panel anymore, you’ve got to have one for the movies, and one for Inhumans, and yes, one for the Netflix series that fall under the general headline of The Defenders. The entire street-level hero team was on call at the con tonight revealing new footage, new details, and making new announcements. (more…)

The subscription service that is revolutionising the way the west watches television, Netflix became a household name practically overnight. Having all your favourite shows and a boatload of movies available to view on demand makes life so much easier for anyone with a job or a hobby or a life, who can’t always be there when shows are broadcast live. It saves having to remember to record stuff and costs a hell of a lot less than buying or renting everything you want to watch individually. Already instrumental in forging the future of home viewing, Netflix moved into creating its own original content in 2013.
There are tons of things you can watch to get to grips with the kind of content Netflix is capable of creating, and it’s well worth doing. Though it’s as guilty of the occasional dud as any other network, there is enough great quality original stuff on there to keep you occupied for months on end.
If you’re new to Netflix and want somewhere to start, you could do a lot worse than checking out these cool shows. (more…)
We’ve had Daredevil and season two is coming, Jessica Jones will be available to stream in a couple of weeks, and Luke Cage is now cast and ready for production. But aren’t we missing one? There were four superhero series that Marvel Studios agreed to produce for Netflix, plus the Defenders miniseries that would combine those four heroes into one team. As you may have noticed though, there’s been precious little news about Iron Fist, like who will play him, or even who’s running the show, and now, there’s a rumor out there that there will be no Iron Fist. Instead, for the fourth member of the Defenders, get ready to be punished. (more…)
The Marvel Comic Universe features a plethora of characters – some that would translate well off the colored pages and onto a movie or TV screen, and some that wouldn’t. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently plugging away at full steam, and after a rocky start with the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s TV offerings seem to be hitting their stride as well. Of course, both the film and television productions are all part of the larger MCU, which begs the simple-sounding yet very-convoluted questions: what characters will be added, and how? (more…)

Now that the dust has begun to settle on the internet shattering announcement that Disney/Marvel Studios will be teaming up with Netflix to bring an astonishing four Marvel properties to the small-on-demand screen it looks like the TV shows are starting to take shape. Well one at least.

I had an actual essay planned this week. I really did. I was going to write about a series I just read that I really, really like and that I want you to like too. But, here’s the thing: Comic-Con. This was my first year covering it as a full-time writer (I’m not there, but because I’m not there my editor realized that I could be chained to a keyboard.), and I wrote a lot, a whole lot. That means I’m tired, so that in-depth essay about that one series will need to wait a week. In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about something that’s not really a rewind, but more of a look at where we are now. See, I read a lot of comics, and in between all the back issues I look at to write this column, I read the stuff hitting the shelves every single week. And I’ve found some stuff that you people need to know about.
