Bringing some anime love to the site by reporting some anime news that may interest some of you folks. First news is that next month, Adult Swim will start airing new episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood once again as shown on their online TV schedule. Adult Swim has already aired 26 of the 62 episode series and that folks can buy up episode 1-39 off the iTunes store.
The next set of news is that Gintama will be making a return to Japanese television (and hopefully on Crunchyroll as well) after ending in March earlier this year. The new series will start airing in April and it seems that most of the cast will return. If anything, it may return with a new title.
The Shonen Jump news doesn’t end there as we will see two new anime as both Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal and Toriko anime series has been announced. Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal will be the fourth series of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise and it seems the new show will coincide with the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! movie that features all three main characters from the past series. The new show seems to be target towards a more younger audience.
Toriko, is a comedy/action series about bishoku-ya (or Gourmet Hunters ) who hunts down rare animals and ingredients to make the best gourmet meal around. The anime will start airing in April of next year in Japan and will take place Dragon Ball Z Kai‘s time slot. As for what will happen to DBZ Kai, nothing has been announced so far as the series is currently at the beginning of the Cell Games arc and it would seem impossible to finish the Boo arc by April.
What in the blue hell is this? After all these years, they now decide to edit Mr. Popo’s appearance? Now, Dragon Ball Z was always edited on TV for the blood, violence, and sometimes nudity. 14 years ago, when Dragon Ball Z first aired, Mr. Popo always appeared as the black genie-esque servant of Kami. Now fast forward to 2010, after Dragon Ball Z Kai’s premiere on NickToons with pretty much the same edits mentioned earlier, we still get the good old Mr. Popo in his regular form. But, for some reason, couple months later with CW’s airing of DBZ Kai, we get an even more edited version of the show.
What else was edited you ask, well, bullets turned into laser, Vegeta was eating a blue fruit instead of some alien hand, and Goku’s halo was turned into some glowing orb above his head. But if you ask me, this whole Mr. Popo edited to a blue being is a little too much. Why change his look now? I know this isn’t the first time this station has changed the skin tone of an anime character but this, this is a bit much. What do you guys think? Do you think I’m over reacting or do you think CW and Funimation may have gone a bit too far with this one? Check the video out and tell us what you think.
Wanna know how bad fans reacted to the 2009 release of Dragon Ball Evolution? Well, there was a group of fans over in France that held a funeral for our beloved hero, Son Goku, in front of a movie theater. While Evolution didn’t it do much for me ( a Dragon Ball fan of 14 years), this fan made film did bring a smile to my face. I don’t know if it’s because they used the sound effects and background music from the show or just the feeling I get from watching it. While it may not have a budget of a Syfy movie it did have the action scenes one would expect from a DBZ episode. So check the video below and watch as these fans do their best to make Great Saiyaman cool.
Well folks, tonight is the night when we the filler free Dragon Ball Z story. That’s right, no Garlic Jr., no fake Namek, and any other pointless filler. Right now in Japan, Kai will start the Androids saga this coming Sunday at episode 58, which in Z it would be episode 126. Anyway, at 8 P.M. Eastern, Nicktoons will have an hour of the fast pace action and unfortunately it will be censored. The reason to check it out though is because of the all new dub script, in which it’ll be much closer to the Japanese script. Check after the jump to hear the English theme song of Dragon Soul and some clips from the show so that you know what to expect. For the folks that doesn’t get Nicktoons, can wait till later this year for Kai to air on CW’s fall line up or pick up the first boxset that is out now and available for DVD and Blu-Ray. (more…)
Yes folks, these are the great people that made rice balls into donuts, changing guns into finger pointing, and the boss of the company claiming kids don’t read all while the Harry Potter books was out making big bucks. 4Kids has done a lot and most of it is bad rep, but they did brought us the Pokemon anime, Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, Magical Doremi, and initially, One Piece. After losing the Pokemon license, 4Kids tried hard to make their own shows which all were trying to either be a Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! rip-offs because they wanted merchandise to sale. Recently, 4Kids made an announcement that it needs to go back to its roots and start licensing shows like they used to, and this fall we will see this re-branding in the form of Toonzai.
Just like how Toonami was a block of Japanese anime, Toonzai will be doing the same every Saturday morning and the three anime shows that so far is known to air will be Yu-Gi-Oh! and Sonic X, which are two anime they have had the license for years now. The big announcement is that Dragon Ball Z Kai will be part of this line up, so we get out good old censored DBZ action like we had 12-13 years ago. They also teased that there are more surprises left to announce but will be revealed later. Although I may not like how 4Kids dealt with their editing of show, I want them to succeed since this is something that can help the anime industry. The Toonzai re-branding is expected to air sometime after the summer and hopefully, we won’t see too much editing like the old ways or else we will have another alcohol edit as hot sauce moment.
This week, two anime trailers were released that are worth checking out. The first trailer is a peak at the upcoming new zombie anime, Highschool of the Dead. The manga has been on hiatus but soon to be back on track and seeing this trailer got me more excited for the franchise. The story follows a group of Highschool kids (and a school nurse who is stacked) going around looking for their relatives and trying to survive chaos around them. It’s got gore, sword and gun action, and best of all, boobs.
The other trailer is something that Funimation just recently released and that is the first full trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z Kai DVD/Blu-Ray release. This is the first chance to check out the newest version of the dub and also, Gohan’s new voice actress. Gotta say, I like what I hear and knowing that this will also air on NickToons, it’ll bring a whole new audience to the Dragon Ball franchise. In case you didn’t know, Dragon Ball Z Kai is a “refreshed” version of DBZ with remastered footage and all new audio, both music and voice. Best of all, it has no filler, thats right, no Princess Snake, fake Namek, etc. Check after the jump for both trailers. (more…)
Well, I wasn’t expecting this. yet alone NickToon’s to pick this up. Just this morning, it was announced that Nickelodeon spinoff channel, NickToons (which airs nothing but old and some new cartoons such as the new Iron Man cartoon), will start airing the filler-less Dragon Ball Z Kai starting in May. As said, Dragon Ball Z Kai is a remastered, re-cut version of Dragon Ball Z but with none of the fillers or extra stuff that wasn’t in the manga. The airing should coincide when th DVD and Blu-Ray is released. Of all channels, NickToons ends up picking this us and not Cartoon Network/Adult Swim. I know Toonami has died years ago but I was kind of hoping for them to pick up the series that helped get them ratings in the past, then again, they don’t even have Naruto: Shippuden, Disney XD does. Oh wells, anime on TV has been a bit rare lately seeing how most people that watches anime will watch it online anyways, either way, I’m glad to see DBZ Kai airing some where.
While writing this, it was just updated that they will also air a new Voltron, titled Voltron Panthera Force. No info on the show yet we should expect to see something soon. Hmmn, so we get a less screaming version of Dragon Ball Z Kai and a new Voltron…either way, one of these shows may ruin someones childhood.
