After sitting through Dwayne “No Longer The Rock” Johnson’s third film in less than a year, Skyscraper, you won’t believe a man can fly – Christopher Reeve as Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent got there first forty years ago and he was wearing spandex and a cape – but you’ll believe Johnson’s one-legged character, Will Sawyer, can leap tall buildings (not leap over, however) to save his family from a burning mega-skyscraper and the rando, vaguely European terrorists who started the fire to steal an ultra-high value MacGuffin. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before from one of the hardest working performers in Hollywood (three films in seven months, with another half-dozen on the way over the next two or three years), but for Johnson’s super-fans, it’ll be more than enough to overlook Skyscraper’s paper-thin, second-rate plot – a mash-up of Die Hard, The Towering Inferno and every action-film cliché in between – forgettable, throwaway villains, a plot and setting deliberately geared toward Asian-Pacific audiences, and mediocre action scenes lathered in CGI spectacle.
Warner Bros. has confirmed today that their next film to be shot for the DC Extended Universe will be none other than Shazam! Let’s not forget that Justice League is currently wrapping up its post-production while Aquaman is still filming so we won’t be seeing an adaptation of Shazam! on the screen just yet. The film is currently scheduled for a release in 2019.
There was a time that Dwayne Johnson became labelled as “franchise viagra”, for a couple of years there it seemed like the idea of adding this actor to your franchise would super-charged your returns, and made your movie series even bigger. It worked out for Fast and Furious, but maybe not so much for G.I. Joe and Journey 2. Regardless, Johnson remains one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood, and his busy film schedule is keeping him in demand from now till at least 2020. So on the one hand, the below video is utterly unbelievable because we know Johnson isn’t actively looking for work, but on the other hand… (more…)
If the release of Wreck-It Ralph 2 next March isn’t enough arcade game action on the big screen for you, prepare yourself for Rampage – a new movie in the works based on the 1986 game of the same name. The game had up to three main protagonists, all giant monsters whose only urge was to wreck a city. You had the option of playing as a King Kong-esque gorilla by the name of George, a Godzilla-like lizard called Lizzie or an enormous werewolf called Ralph. The game had a simple premise: you, humungous mutant monsters, smashed buildings, smacked people and ate things, while avoiding the bullets of the military tasked with taking you down. (more…)
For as long as there’s been discussions about the DC Extended Universe, there’s been a something there in the corner of your eye, and if you focused too hard on it, it would vanish before you know it. It was the Black Adam movie, a project about the Shazam! antihero and antagonist that had signed Dwayne Johnson to star as the titular character. And then nothing happened, and continued to not happen, for the next several years. Well things have been heating up on Black Adam lately, enough for the fans to wonder if we’re any closer to actually (finally) seeing this thing on screen. (more…)
Since 2014, Dwayne Johnson has been heavily involved in bringing a Shazam! movie to the big screen. The former professional wrestler, who at this point is “box office steroids” and has was 2016’s richest actor having made more than $64 million last year alone for such films as Central Intelligence, Moana and the TV show Ballers. Johnson has been working with his production team in concert with DC on bringing a Shazam! movie to the big screen and within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The Rock will play Shazam’s rogue Black Adam in the upcoming film which is expected to be released in 2019. However, there is more good news related to Shazam!
We have to deal with two things when we talk about Shazam!, and the first is how the genuine tale of a well-meaning teenage boy with the ability to become a hulking adult body-builder that can fly by saying a magic word will fit into the dark as sin DC Extended Universe? The other question is how Dwayne Johnson can possibly fit another big budget franchise movie into his schedule so long as he has Jumanji, Rampage, a San Andreas sequel, and The Fast and the Furious and proposed spin-offs to fit in? Well don’t count Johnson, or his ability to multitask, out yet when it comes to the DCEU. (more…)
The range and versatility of the Dwayne Johnson will be put to its biggest test yet next summer when Baywatch hits theatres everywhere. Based on the 90s syndicated drama about the lives and loves of L.A. lifeguards, once renowned for being “the biggest show in the world”, Johnson will be called upon to fill the trunk space of David Hasselhoff and sell the Baywatch brand to a more cynical audience less inclined to tolerate camp and cheese. So can Johnson and Baywatch capture the spirit of the show, while selling it with big screen action and comedy, not to mention beautiful people in swimwear? Well, take a look at the trailer and see. Dwayne Johnson has his hands in so many pies these days he might as well be a Strawberry Shortcake villain. Seriously, how can anyone keep track of them all? One could hardly be blamed if it slipped their memory that one of Johnson’s many upcoming projects is Rampage, an adaptation of classic arcade game about monsters destroying cities. Johnson will be teaming up with his San Andreas director Brad Peyton to bring the mayhem to life, and what tremendous mayhem it will be. It’s not yet certain when we’ll see the movie, but Peyton wants you to know that this will be a Rampage of love. (more…)
The cast and crew of Jumanji seem to be having a good time in the jungle, posting pictures and videos to social media. Dwayne Johnson is as ever, the social media darling, the guy just gets it. Jack Black isn’t one to take a back seat so he’s upped his game by simply eating lunch. Check out both videos below. (more…)
