Edge of Tomorrow

There’s no denying actor Tom Cruise’s box office power.  As far as anyone can remember, the seemingly ageless action star has been fiercely running from one film to another and topping the box office in each film with his name alone.  It was quite strange when Edge of Tomorrow came out and was one of his “flops.”  The film did receive critical praise and a well-done sci-fi film, which should have taken off, especially in the geek world where the film literally had a video game-like narrative where the protagonist dies time and time again to successfully complete his mission.  The film blended the right amount of humor and action.  When poor box office reports came it, it pretty much ensured that this was a one-and-done franchise, but thanks to increased DVD/Blue Ray sales and an almost cult following of the film there was hope that a sequel would greenlight.   (more…)

The Top 10 Nerdy Movies of 2014

topnerdymovies

As we say goodbye to 2014, we also say goodbye to an interesting and provocative year for movies that appealed to the nerd base. Amongst the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, action and horror, there were a number of very excellent contenders for the Best of the Year, all covering a wide range of themes, styles, and ideas which were brought to the screen by some very talented filmmakers, actors and artists. Before spinning off into 2015, which may be the biggest year for nerdy movies ever, let’s take a look back at the Best Nerdy Movies of 2014. (more…)

Right off I have to admit that I’ve taken my cheap shots at Tom Cruise over the past couple of years. He’s kinda deserved it, but then I sat down and watched Oblivion… and didn’t hate it. Now Cruise has another Sci-Fi epic Edge of Tomorrow coming to the big screen and although that cringing “Travolta-Battlefield-Earth-Scientologist feeling is still rattling around in the back of my head, this trailer left me wanting to see more. [Editor’s Note: At this very moment, Manny Lozano, one of our embedded reporters, is getting comfortable in Hall H preparing to live blog the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures panel in where they’ll be previewing Godzilla, Seventh Son, 300: Rise of an Empire, The LEGO Movie, and Edge of Tomorrow. We’ve already had a taste of Godzilla with Manny’s report from the Godzilla Encounter, and we’ve seen trailers for Seventh Son and The LEGO Movie. We’re not entirely sure just who’ll be appearing on the panel, but I know Manny will let us know the minute things start. For more info on the panel, here’s a link to the official SDCC schedule. Once the panel starts, keep refreshing for updates.]

[UPDATE: This panel has since concluded. Hit the jump to view the original live blog commentary. Thanks for tuning in! Coming soon, the live blog of Lionsgate’s Hall H panel.]
