Hot on the heels of the announcement of the casting of Martin Freeman comes more casting news. Fans who wondered what Emily VanCamp would be doing with her free time once Revenge ends its final season on ABC can sleep well tonight as VanCamp is confirmed to reprise her role as Agent 13 Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War. (more…)
The announcement that legendary actor/director Robert Redford will take up a role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was met with intrigue. Who might the Sundance Kid be playing in a Captain America movie? Well, Comic Book Movie’s SPINOFF blog was able to go to the source and ask Redford himself during a press roundtable for his new thriller The Company You Keep.
So what happened? Well, SPINOFF asked Redford to confirm if he was playing a high-ranking member of S.H.I.E.L.D. as previously reported. “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Redford replied. “The head of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
So why would the man that starred in Three Days of the Condor, The Sting, The Candidate and The Natural want to boss around Captain America, Nick Fury et al? “The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing,” he said. “I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.”
It certainly is bold. Who would have guess that an actor as classy as Robert Redford would get involved in a superhero movie. I guess it just goes to prove how far the genre’s come, huh?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will start filming later this year for an April 2014 release. The film will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and star Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jone, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Max Hernandez, and Samuel L. Jackson.
More news as it develops.

So the fact that Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes place in the modern all but mitigates the possibility of any actors besides Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky/Winter Soldier) from returning. But not so says Stanley Tucci, who played super soldier serum creator Dr. Erskine in The First Avenger. He’s not referring to himself, of course, but another character from the film that Cap was very, very fond of.
While being interviewed by Collider about his role in the upcoming Bryan Singer film Jack the Giant Slayer, Tucci let slip that while he hasn’t been yet asked to cameo in the new Captain America film, his co-star Hayley Atwell, who played love interest Peggy Carter in the film, has.
“I’m really sad,” he said about not getting the nod before adding, “I know that Hayley is going back to do a flashback scene, but I have not been asked.”
Tucci counts himself as a fan of the romance between Cap and Peggy in the first film. “I really love that. I really love the relationship between the two of them,” Tucci added, but how did he find out about Atwell’s re-appearance in the Marvel Universe? “I just had dinner with [her] last night, we’ve become good friends.”
As previously reported, Revenge actress Emily VanCamp will play the leading lady in The Winter Soldier, and rumor has it the character is none other than Sharon Carter, granddaughter of Peggy. So will Cap flashback upon meeting the new Agent Carter? Or maybe Atwell’s going to put on old age make-up, as revealed in the deleted scenes of The Avengers, we know that Peggy’s still alive in 2012.
But on a final note for this story, Tucci has nothing but love for the first Captain America film. “I loved making that movie,” he explained. “I had a great time. I really like Joe Johnston. I think he’s a wonderful director. I also love the look of the film, and the tone of the film, and the character was great. I was thrilled to be able to play that. I was so sad that I died because I wanted to come back and do another one. It was great to be offered this old, German scientist. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ I couldn’t tell if I was really flattered or insulted. I don’t know.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be in theaters April 4, 2014.
Deadline has the exclusive report naming Revenge‘s Emily VanCamp as the female lead joining Chris Evans for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We don’t know for sure who’ll she be playing but there’s a very good chance it’s Sharon Carter, niece of Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell in The First Avenger), and of course, new love interest for Cap. Which to me is weird, but I bet it’s a tough dating scene for someone once frozen and misplaced in time.
This news also comes with revelation that Evans has yet to receive his script for The Winter Soldier. Say what? The film is supposed to release on April 4th, 2014, so the news Evans hasn’t seen a finished script is surprising. He revealed this on the latest Doug Loves Movies podcast,
I don’t have a script yet. We start shooting in two months and they haven’t given me a script. That’s how Marvel works. Different directors, it’s the Russo brothers. It makes perfect sense, Community, S.H.I.E.L.D. superhero action movie [Ed Note: Evans is joking here]
Shooting on The Winter Soldier is also reportedly pushed back until June, which could be why Evans doesn’t have a script yet. And hell, they only just cast VanCamp. What d’ya think, will this effect the 2014 release date?
