Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
For all lovers of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy epic, Harry Potter, 2016 is going to be a big year for you! Not only will Harry Potter be returning to continue the story from where it left off; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — a play described as the eighth Harry Potter story is set to open in London next summer — but the big-screen spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be making its debut in theaters next fall. Shooting for Fantastic Beasts is already underway, in fact, but it’ll be a while before the first trailer is released.
So in the meantime, Warner Bros. has released the new official Fantastic Beasts title logo.
While the release date for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is still over a year away, shooting has begun on the film, and most of the main characters (that we know of) have been cast. But there’s always room for more big names in big films, it seems, and today we learned that the Harry Potter pseudo-prequel has gained another big name, in the form of a big man: Ron Perlman – Hellboy himself – has joined the cast, according to a THR report.
Millions of fans reached the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and thought, “I wonder what comes next for Harry and friends?” The book’s epilogue offers some insight, but there was still an 18 year gulf between the Battle of Hogwarts and the gang seeing their kids off on the Hogwarts’ Express. Pottermore‘s tried to fill in some of those blanks a couple of thousand words at a time, but let’s cut the chase, wouldn’t it be nice to have another Harry Potter movie with an adult Harry, Ron and Hermoine having an adventure as twentysomethings? It turns out that filmmaker Chris Columbus has had the same thought. (more…)
Even though it won’t hit theaters until November 2016, the Harry Potter sorta-spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has snagged it’s fourth major cast member: actress Alison Sudol, better known to many as a modern-soft-rock singer-songwriter performing with the band A Fine Frenzy. As reported by Variety, Sudol joins the previously-announced cast of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, and Ezra Miller.
Franchises are the bread and butter for Hollywood these days, which is why the development of something like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is seen as an incredibly cynical move on the part of a studio. This spin-off of the wizarding world of Harry Potter could be seen as the most egregious example of lack of Hollywood imagination, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear by further expanding a 7-part book series that’s already been made into 8 movies. (Eight highly profitable movies, that is.) On the other hand, Harry Potter’s was such a vividly realized world, and though Harry’s story is over, it feels like their was so much left unexplored. Combined with the involvement of Potter creator J.K. Rowling, there’s lots of room to hope that Fantastic Beasts might be good after all. But who will search out these creatures? We now have some ideas. (more…)
Apparently it takes less than 144 characters to bring Harry Potter fans into a frenzy of riddle solving madness. Earlier this week J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, sent out a cryptic tweet that suddenly sent Harry Potter fans into an anagram frenzy. Turns out it was all to drum up even more interest in Rowling’s upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. Could this mysterious tweet have something to do with Harry Potter showing up in the movie? (more…)
He may have spent over six years toiling on the final four Harry Potter movies, but British director David Yates is far from done with the magical world of J.K. Rowling. You may recall that in the works is a new spin-off trilogy based in the Harry Potter universe, but not based on any published Harry Potter material. Called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the movie promises all the magic and wonder of the eight previous Harry Potter films but telling all new stories that don’t crossover with any characters we’ve already been introduced to. I suppose Warner Bros. plans to not just capitalize on the Harry Potter brand, but the knowledge and experience of the Harry Potter series’ most experienced director. (more…)
Fans of the Harry Potter-verse are no doubt pleased to know that the wizardly adventures did not end with the conclusion of the last film. Though Mr. Potter himself will not be back, other spell-slinging heroes and villains shall be appearing in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them. Now, we get a little more info on how the project is going with a picture showing a little bit of the creature design and a report on some of the studio details. Scroll on, Potter fans, to get the latest. (more…)
Though it seemed as if there might be a glimmer of hope for Prisoner of Azkaban fans that Alfonso Cuaron would return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off, the filmmaker himself dashed those rumors today. Unfortunately it appears Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is going to have to find another visionary director to take the helm, though I doubt the producers are going to be scrambling to find someone suitable who wants the gig.
Word around the Internet today has Gravity‘s Academy Award winning director Alfonso Cuaron in serious talks to direct and helm a trilogy based on J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter spin-off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Fine Them. (more…)
