And what he’s got is a pair of tighty-whities featuring Gandalf and his famous quote, “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” Ian McKellen hosted Only Make Believe‘s 14th Annual Gala on Monday night, which honored Susan Sarandon and Dr. Alex Karp, and at one point in the evening performed a quick change on stage and ended up giving the audience a backside view. One of the many things I love about director Peter Jackson is his willing us to bring us behind the scenes of his films. Offering video diaries, documentaries, featurettes, interviews… etc. He offers up every facet of the filmmaking process.  As a viewer, I respect the final product more when I realize the amount of work that went into it. Ultimately, it’s amazing watching a concept evolve into reality; seeing nothing turn into something.

Peter Jackson has released his 12th production video blog for his Hobbit trilogy. This one focuses on the pick-up shots and shows off some fun behind the scenes footage. (more…)

I’m sure, sitting in some dark corner of the Internet, there’s some slash fan fiction about Magneto and Charles Xavier hooking up, maybe even getting married and raising mutant powered babies. In a delightfully reality bending twist Sir Ian McKellen is going to marry Sir Patrick Stewart . . . to Stewart’s fiancee, jazz singer Sunny Ozell.

McKellen recently appeared on the Jonathan Ross Show, where he announced:

“I’m going to marry Patrick [Stewart]. I am going to officiate at his wedding.”

Ross then asked McKellen if he was legally able to marry Stewart:

“I don’t know, but in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married. … I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”

Massachusetts’ Secretary of Commonwealth does offer a service that allows a family friend or relative to perform the couple’s wedding ceremony for a fee of $25. When asked what he might wear, McKellen replied that the last time he officiated he wore:

“a white gown which I bought in India. You mustn’t upstage the bride.”

Imagine Gandalf officiating your wedding, how cool is that. Can you imagine the guest list at this? Most likely the actual ceremony will be a low key affair, Stewart isn’t known for big publicity seeking type events. The reception however, should be a fan boy or girl’s dream convention. I’m sure there will be Stewart’s friends from Star Trek, X-Men, as well as many others in the entertainment and music business.

Stewart, 72, has been romantically linked to Ozell, 35, since 2009.

Last week we learned how we nearly missed out on having Ian McKellen reprise Gandalf in The Hobbit. It would have been a tragedy. It would have been heartbreaking. And boy, wouldn’t it have sucked to have been the guy needing to fill those robes. But thankfully, that’s not where we are, McKellen chose to return and we get not one, not two, but three more movies of his Gandalf the Grey.

Today McKellen took to his blog – yes, he has a blog, and a Twitter, the man is very connected – to give a more in depth explanation to his initial hesitation at returning for The Hobbit. He outlined the pros and cons of the decision and it’s truly interesting because you see this isn’t a decision he made lightly. Clearly he cares for the character and his performance, and for that we fans should count ourselves very lucky.

Pros

Working with Peter Jackson is always stimulating and fun: we make each other laugh and he doesn’t let me get away with anything too theatrical on film. I admire his world-class colleagues like Andrew Lesnie (cinematographer), John Howe and Alan Lee (designers of Middle-earth) and so many more who returned for The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings trilogy has become a cinematic classic and the same could well be true of The Hobbit. I enjoy living in New Zealand and exploring the amazingly beautiful countryside.

Cons

A two-year commitment to The Hobbit would keep me from other work and keep me away from home and friends in London. I like new challenges and I’ve already played Gandalf the Grey.

He also mentions some of the behind-the-scenes problems, like finding a director after Guillermo Del Toro dropped out and issues New Zealand actors’ union, as reasons for not coming back. He thought the film might have been jinxed!

What clinched it is the same thing we heard earlier,

…the advice of a wise friend: “Ian, all those fans of the LOTR aren’t going to understand or care about your doubts.  They just want to see you back as Gandalf.”  And then I realised what I’d known all along, that I couldn’t bear to think of another actor donning the pointy hat and grey robes.

Again, a sigh of relief was heard the internet wide when McKellen announced he would indeed return for The Hobbit.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14th. And just for shits and giggles, who would you have cast as the grey wizard were McKellen not to have returned? Michael Gambon did a nice job subbing in as Dumbledore after Richard Harris passed, but man is hard imagining another Gandalf.

Ah man, aren’t we lucky we don’t live in that reality, eh? Because some world is living in a universe where Ian McKellen did not make the decision to return as Gandalf for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Thankfully, our McKellen is just the swellest guy around and, as he recently told The Hollywood Reporter, simply had to reprise the role because he didn’t want to disappoint the fans.

What a cool dude, right? He went on to explain the reasoning for his initial reluctance,

It was a little like going back to something that wasn’t necessarily going to be particularly challenging. Gandalf is still inside me, as it were, so the business of getting to know a new character — I was sort of going to be robbed of that.

Our hero in all of this is a friend of McKellen’s who asked how he’d explain why he didn’t return, which made him reconsider,

You felt, how many millions of people are waiting for it? They wouldn’t understand if you weren’t as keen as they were.

Whew! Due to our good fortune of existing in this reality, we can go see McKellen in The Hobbit this December. Any other realities, well, guess you’re outta luck.
