Word is making the Internet rounds that Forest Whitaker is in talks to join the cast of Disney/Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars Spinoff Rogue One. If true and if the deal goes through and the ink dries this would be some fantastic casting. Whitaker is a talented Oscar/Golden Globe/BAFTA winning actor that would bring some heavy-duty acting cred to whatever role he takes on. (more…)

One of the most intriguing developments coming out of Star Wars and Lucasfilm‘s acquisition by Walt Disney Studios is that we’re not just getting a new trilogy, we’re going to be getting a new movie every year. At least that’s Disney’s desire anyway. Shortly after production got underway on The Force Awakens, the first chapter of the new trilogy, Disney started recruiting talent for the first of a series of films to take place in the Star Wars universe, but is not a part of the Skywalker saga. For the first of these films we know the director (Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards), we know the star (Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones), and we know the name (Rogue One). But now, most importantly, we know what it’s going to be about… (more…)

Toho Teases the Original ‘Godzilla’s Return

Godzilla54

Every time America tries to co-opt Godzilla for our its own franchise pantheon, Japan always steps up and says, “Not so fast!” Understandable, as Godzilla maybe Japan’s biggest cultural export – literally and figuratively – but with the success of last year’s latest attempt to Americanize Tokyo’s favorite perennial tourist, the originator of the King of the Monsters, Toho Studios, is planning for a Godzilla comeback on the other side of the Pacific Rim. That news was announced earlier this year, but to back that up, Toho has now announced that the new film will have not just one, but two directors! And on top of that, we now have a vaguely evocative image to tease fans the world over. (more…)

Are you a fan of Star Wars? Of course you are.  What about awesome conventions?  Of course you are.  How about beautiful weather? Disneyland? Knotts Berry Farm? The Ocean? Yes, yes, and yes, right?  Well, then, if you haven’t bought your ticket to this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, I don’t know what you’re doing with your life.  After San Diego Comic-Con sold out in record time this year, many con-savvy fans of geek culture immediately turned to the Star Wars-centric convention as a means to alleviate their pain a bit.  If you haven’t heard of Celebration or were on the fence about whether or not you wanted to go, two names have just been added to the guest list that should have you running to the site to grab your ticket.  Star Wars spinoff directors Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards have just been confirmed to be in attendance. We’re less than a year away from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the all important big screen relaunch of the franchise under the direction of Walt Disney Studios and new Lucasfilm Ltd. President Kathleen Kennedy. To say that there’s a lot riding on the film is an understatement, although the fact that it’s Star Wars buys an inordinate amount of good will, in other words, it will sell out no matter how bad it theoretically may be. But there’s one audience member whose opinion matters above all others, and his name is Robert Iger. Iger is the CEO of Disney, and in his words, The Force Awakens will be “worth the wait.” (more…)

Aaron Paul Playing Han Solo

Next year after the release of J.J. AbramsStar Wars: The Force Awakens, we will have more of an idea of where the franchise is going with Rian Johnson’s (The Brothers Bloom, Looper) Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX going into pre-production . However, the films that will remain fairly elusive are the planned spin-offs, which will be released in between the J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson’s films. There are three projects  – two which will be directed by Gareth Edwards, and one by Josh Trank – that could be potentially set at any point in the Star Wars timeline and could follow many different directions and branch out into an infinite number of stories. A rumor that has been running rampant the last couple of years, has been the speculation that one of the spin-offs could center on a Han Solo adventure, and the rumor has just been given a boost following a report that it is, in fact, true. Godzilla’s Coming Back! We Mean to Toho!

Godzilla54

Godzilla may be a lusted after box office commodity in America, but in Japan he’s a cinematic legend on par with Humphrey Bogart or Charlie Chaplin. It was Japan’s Toho Studios that got the Godzilla ball rolling in 1954, turning what could have been a silly monster movie starring a guy in a suit trampling on cardboard buildings into a frightening parable for Japan’s suffering from nuclear warfare nearly a decade earlier. The metaphor wasn’t lost on anyone, and the Ishirō Honda creation developed a worldwide following that spawned dozens of sequels over the last six decades and at least two American remakes. But after a decade in retirement, the Japanese are looking to put their stamp on the legend once more. In other words, Toho’s back in the Godzilla business. (more…)

The BBC has released a series of promotional stills for the upcoming Doctor Who episode The Caretaker. It seems that Clara (Jenna Coleman) is having one of those Doctor Who kind of days. While most people might be worried about the alien trying to destroy the Coal Hill School where she teaches between Doctor Who jaunts, Clara has another more pressing problem to deal with. Her love interest Danny Pink (Samuel Anderson) is about to meet the Doctor (Peter Capaldi). (more…)

With the pending home video release of Gareth Edwards‘ 2014 reboot of Godzilla coming to a retailer near you in another week, we pause to do some navel gazing at all the things that he did wrong in the film. YEAH! Take that Edwards. You may be still growing as a filmmaker, and Godzilla was only your second movie, but since you didn’t make the Godzilla movie we all had playing in our heads we’re going to tear you a new one! Ahem. Now that I’ve got that out of my system, let’s introduce a couple of new videos to hit the interwebs today. On the one hand we have a judicious You Tuber who edited together all the Godzilla and MOTU bits in two vids that show how little screen time they all got, and secondly, Honest Trailers has put together a – well – honest trailer for Godzilla.
