One-time Spartan king and opera phantom Gerard “Gerry” Butler continues his descent into B-movie mediocrity and – eventually – straight-to-VOD obscurity with Hunter Killer, a lazily scripted, short-on-logic, long-on-absurdity submarine “thriller” (mostly minus the thrills) released during the end of a month known for Halloween-themed horror. Maybe the studio behind Hunter Killer decided to risk a late October release as a bit of counter programming. Or maybe they thought Butler’s name – combined with recent Academy Award winner Gary “Paycheck” Oldman and rapper-turned-actor Common – would be enough to recoup their investment in or even make a modest profit from Hunter Killer before it inevitably sinks into the deepest of ocean depths, never to be seen or heard from again (except on late-night basic cable as a perfect antidote for lifetime members of the insomnia club).
In 2013, there were two movies released that could loosely by described as “Die Hard in the White House.” One of them was from Master of Disaster Roland Emmerich, which saw a terrorist raid of the presidential residence unfold like a buddy cop comedy with President Jamie Foxx and Secret Service wannabe Channing Tatum. The other film, Olympus Has Fallen, was definitely more deserving of the aforementioned reference to the seminal 1988 film thanks to hard R violence, and an everyman action hero who takes no prisoners, and takes no guff from men in suits. In that spirit, London Has Fallen does everything the first one did but bigger, louder, and bloodier than Gerard Butler‘s last presidential detail. (more…)
You guys… I bring you this news because it is my job to do so, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy doing this to you. Let’s just get this done quick, like ripping off a Band-Aid. Gods of Egypt has released its first theatrical trailer. It’s… interesting to say the least. Besides the cast for a movie set in ancient Egypt being pretty damn white-washed, the special effects are big and bad and unapologetic. Every shot seems like a glorified flex-fest between Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gerard Butler (The latter totally plucks out the former’s eye, by the way. Because that’s what you do when someone is unfit to be king, right?). Read on for the actual premise of the movie, and the trailer itself. (more…)
From the “remakes no one asked for” file, comes news tonight that Edgar Ramirez is replacing Gerard Butler in the remake of the 90s surfer heist movie Point Break. Ramierez will star along side Luke Bracey in this new version of the film about disenfranchised surfers robbing banks to flip the bird to the system, and the lone, conflicted FBI agent, improbably named Johnny Utah, who’s not sure he wants to bring them to justice. Apparently there’s breaking casting news from the set of the planned Point Break remake (I know: Half of you are saying “What?”, while the rest are asking yourselves “Why?”).
So I’ll back up a little: Yes–a remake of 1991’s action-packed cheesefest starring Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, and Gary Busey is indeed a thing, and is set to begin filming this fall, despite the necessity of recasting one of it’s stars–more after the parachute jump: (more…)
Yet one more project being ripped from the video game world and turned into Hollywood profits, Kane & Lynch is also one of those same properties that always seems to be on the verge of collapse. In tentative development for about five years now, it looks like there may finally be at least a little progress toward getting it onto the big screen, starting with some interesting casting choices. Take half of the Farrelly Brothers (Peter Farrelly), mix in a whole pack of other directors (Elizabeth Banks, Steven Brill, Steve Carr, Rusty Cundieff, James Duffy, Griffin Dunne, Patrik Forsberg, James Gunn, Bob Odenkirk and Brett Ratner) and an astonishingly large cast of famous faces (I’m not going to list them all, just watch the trailer and you’ll recognize everyone) and what do you get? A movie that looks far funnier than I think any of us expected. The true cinephile will recall classic comedy anthology movies like Kentucky Fried Movie, Amazon Women On The Moon and The Groove Tube, and by the looks of it, Farrelly intends to resurrect the genre with Movie 43.
Hot damn does it look funny. Check the trailer out below, but be warned it is very NSFW due to f-bombs and nudity. Yes, the Movie 43 trailer, come for the nudity and Kate Winslet cursing, stay to be inspired by Terrence Howard.
