SDCC 2011: It’s Batman Pretend Time, New Trailers for ‘Batman: Arkham City’ & ‘Gotham City Imposters’

- 07-23-11Comics, Videogames Posted by Sarah Moran

Two great looking video games are coming out which will allow you to play pretend and run around as the Caped Crusader, everyone’s childhood dream, right? One allows you to live in the skin of the Batman as he patrols Gotham overrun by Arkham inmates, the other has you to dress up in gear with the Batman logo and shoot a lot of guns. You decide which is the truer representation.

Batman: Arkham City, the much anticipated sequel to Arkham Asylum drops on October 18th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. At Comic-Con a new trailer was released giving us a glimpse of more obstacles ahead for the Dark Knight. Clue, he was born on a Monday.

The Penguin looks creepy and Solomon Grundy will be a handful. But you’re Batman, you can totally handle it. Also joining Bats in the new game will be Talia Al Ghul, voiced by Stana Katic. Whether she’ll be friend or foe is unknown, but I’m sure she has plans for Batman. Plans that might not sit well with his other sometimes paramour, Catwoman. All I’m saying, is there should be an option for a one on one fight between Talia and Catwoman with Batman as the prize.

The second Batman game is probably the farthest thing from a Batman game. This is Gotham City Imposters. First off, you arm your character with guns, then team up and take down opposing factions in a multi-player death match. The two teams are the Batz and Jokerz and your customizable character will affiliate with one or the other. You’ll show off your team pride in an assortment of kitschy gear.

Imposters will be a downloadable game for XBLA and PSN and is set for a Holiday 2012 release. Which Bat-game are you most excited for? Clearly, Arkham City is the most faithful but I think Imposters looks fun. As long you join the Jokerz team, parading around as Batman with a gun feels wrong.

E3 2011: ‘Gotham City Imposters’ Debut Trailer

- 06-07-11Comics, Videogames Posted by Sarah Moran

When we mentioned this upcoming Batman and Joker themed first-person shooter before, it’s befuddling yet fun concept had us intrigued. With this trailer for Gotham City Imposters, debuted at E3, we’re still interested but still kind of confused. The game looks fun, that’s for sure. Everyone loves a FPS where you team up to destroy your friends, isn’t that the key to HALO and Call of Duty’s longevity? But why theme it with the super hero most closely associated with hating guns?

In this first trailer we learn more about the members of the Bats and Jokerz. These average Gotham citizens are inspired to take to the streets in an all out gang war, choosing sides and of course, a matching wardrobe.

Gotham City Impostors is a multiplayer game unlike any other, giving players the opportunity to rebel against conformity as they customize their own characters. Posing as amateur vigilantes or villains, gamers will create their very own Bats and Jokerz characters using unprecedented customization options including insane costumes, homebrewed gadgets and a wide range of traditional and imagined weapons.

All right, the premise is a little weak. And, I’ll admit having gangs inspired by Batman riddling enemies with bullets is really bizarre. Calling themselves the Red Hoods makes more sense, but that doesn’t have the name recognition the game creators are banking on. Honestly, this looks like a solid Jokerz game, and maybe it should be played that way if you have issue with the Bats using lethal weaponry.

Watch the trailer and give us your thoughts. Gonna give Gotham City Imposters a shot when it becomes available for download on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2012 or skip it, you like your Batman original rather than extra crispy.

‘Gotham City Imposters’ Has Two Things, Batman & Guns. Wait, What?

- 05-17-11Comics, Videogames Posted by Sarah Moran

There’s a new Batman game in town and it’s concept might shock the crap out of you. At least for the diehard Batfreaks. It’s a first-person shooter set in Gotham City. That’s right, an FPS involving the ever vigilante, anti-gun, Batman. Crazy, right? Well the more I read it might just be the good kind of crazy.

Gotham City Imposters is a multi-player FPS set in Batman’s home turf where players can create heroes or villains inspired by the caped crusader or his nemesis, the Joker. Then players get to shoot the shit out of of each other, fun right? I think this concept is brilliant.

Recently Erik Eckstein previewed the game for G4 and he gives us some insight on the game play,

Picture your typical downloadable shooter like Blacklight Tango Down or Breach, yet before panicking, picture it full of customizable Batmen and Jokerites. Players can fully tailor how their particular hero or heroine looks, from cosmetic choices like gloves, capes, and cowls to weapon and gadget loadouts. Pick a Nimble body type, and you’ll move quick, but Tough bodies take more damage. Adopt a grapple gun, and you’ll be able to ascend to a high vantage point, but if you race around on roller skates, you’re a lot faster on the ground.

You’ll be able to choose from a variety of guns (shotguns, assault rifles, rocket launchers, sub-machine guns), support weapons like pipe bombs, boomerangs, and revitalizing energy drinks, and gadgets like the aforementioned grapple gun or glider rig, which lets you float further when jumping/falling. These weapons can also have mods attached to them, so you can tweak a rocket launcher to fire multiple rounds, for example. All of this is gained through various unlocks in the game; the more you progress, the more opens up.

You can join one of two gangs, the Bats or Jokerz, and then you simply waste each other in online matches. I couldn’t really allow myself to make a Bats gang member, I know guns aren’t his style. But a Jokerz member?! Oh, I’m all over that. I’ve already created my Joker-devoted villain in DCU Online, why not branch out into GCI? Plus, GCI sounds like a great pick-up any time game. You play whenever you feel like shooting things, ever have those days? I also can’t help but be sucked in by the promise of so much customization. Creating and developing my character in the DC Universe was, by far, my favorite part of DCU Online.

Created by Monolith Productions, the same guys behind FEAR, in a partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive, and a storyline penned by none other than Jim Lee. This is full of win right? As of now no release date has been announced but it will be available for XBLA, PSN, and PC.

Intrigued by this Gotham-based FPS? I’m already hooked and I haven’t eve seen a bit of footage. We do have this great image of character concept art, available below the cut, check it out.
