Justice League Dark is the latest property that comic publisher DC is interested in adding to their film-focused Extended Universe, and rumors are flying around like wildfire that seem to indicate that they are pushing to get the film going as quickly as possible. Yesterday brought some casting rumors that might have been more fan-fiction than anything else, but today we’re hearing word from a reliable source that the hunt for a “dark” director is on.
Guillermo Del Toro
‘Pacific Rim 2’ Is Off Universal’s Release Calendar – but Guillermo del Toro is Still Working on It Anyway
Love him or loathe him, you’ve got to give writer/director Guillermo del Toro credit – the man doesn’t seem to have much quit in him. Even though Universal Studios recently took Pacific Rim 2 completely off its calendar of upcoming releases, he went ahead and submitted a script and budget request to the studio anyhow.
After the not-quite-blockbuster box-office success of Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone, Cronos) middling foray into big-budget spectacle (Universal recently put a planned sequel on indefinite hold), it was all but inevitable that del Toro would scale back his ambitions, budgetary and otherwise, and return to his horror roots, a return welcomed by del Toro’s relatively small, loyal, vocal fanbase. Return to his roots del Toro indeed does with Crimson Peak, a hyper-stylized Gothic horror-romance/homage that never quite rises to the level of del Toro’s earlier, more accomplished efforts like the aforementioned film trio, but it still offers an abundance of sensory pleasures (albeit less so where narrative ones are concerned) drawn directly from del Toro’s fertile, fervid imagination and his unabashed, love of Gothic horror-romances. Another day, another quote about Hellboy 3. The final chapter of Guillermo del Toro‘s trilogy based on the comic book series by Mike Mignola, is on the must-have list of many movie fans, but finding the political/financial will to make it a reality has been something quite different. Still, that hasn’t stopped us from talking about, it hasn’t stopped movie journalists from asking about it, and it hasn’t stopped the primary players from the series from answering those questions. And so it goes, when Hellboy star Ron Perlman again appeared in front of reporters, he was naturally asked about Hellboy 3, and is answer offered some surprising insight. (more…)
Wondering when Guillermo del Toro is going to finally get started on the next chapter of his giant robots versus giant monsters franchise, Pacific Rim? Ever since the first movie came out, people have been waiting for more. Del Toro was pretty adamant about the fact that he was going to continue with a second film and now it seems as if he’s finally getting to it. Scroll on to find out the latest concerning when they’ll begin shooting as well as a rumor about what the possible title will be. (more…)
It was with a lot of regret that fans got the news last week that Guillermo del Toro‘s vision for Justice League Dark would not be realized. A super-team made up of DC Comics‘ premier supernatural heroes seemed too inside del Toro’s wheelhouse for it not to happen, but sometimes these things are not meant to be, unlike Pacific Rim 2, which is currently in development and will be released in 2017 in theaters everywhere. Meanwhile, fans eagerly await the news that will assure even the remotest chance that Hellboy 3 might become a reality. But would it surprise you to know that these three projects are all connected in way beyond del Toro’s involvement? In fact, it’s the very epitome of the term “show business.” (more…)
This is another story about why it seems like Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment don’t seem to be entirely sure that they know what they’re doing so far as movies based on DC Comics characters are concerned. Today’s installment of “What are they thinking?” brings us back to the subject of Justice League Dark, the proposed adaptation of DC’s premier supernatural super-team by fan favorite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the project, and now we can reveal why: it’s over. Well, at least for del Toro. In other news, Warners is doing some shuffling, certain comic book projects will be fronted by them, and others will be fronted by New Line. You know, the pressing stuff. (more…)
Oh, Hellboy 3 – it’s been in our hearts and on our minds for the last five or so years. Unfortunately, the studio hasn’t been that keen on the idea and Guillermo del Toro is busy making other projects, so it doesn’t look likely to happen anytime soon. Still, actor Ron Perlman isn’t giving in just yet.
Recognizing that comic book fans were able to get FOX to make a Deadpool movie by getting it to trend out of the stratosphere, Perlman is trying to rally that same sort of enthusiastic support for Hellboy III. (more…)
There was once a time that Guillermo del Toro was attached to make another film version based on the Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion. I don’t know what del Toro had planned for that movie, or even if he’s still involved in it in some capacity, but I know one thing, and that’s if del Toro had decided to make Haunted Mansion instead of Crimson Peak, he probably wouldn’t have just won praise from Stephen King. An absolute horror icon who can, without any hesitation, be considered an authority on the genre, King’s praise is gold.. Well, he’s seen Crimson Peak, and he’s very excited about it.
