Dame Helen Mirren Kicks Ass in New ‘RED 2’ Clips

mirrenRED2

Most people Helen Mirren‘s age are slowing down, taking it easy, but as you will see in the below clips, the classy British actress and Academy Award winner can go gun for gun with the best of them, and can maintain perspective and offer important life advice even while disposing a corpse in a full-length ball gown. As I said, classy lady.

In these new clips from the upcoming action sequel RED 2, we get to see Mirren show off her shooting skills to a doubting whipper-snapper who looks and acts suspiciously like Storm Shadow from G.I. Joe, and in the second video she calls up Bruce Willis and friends to give them some bad news.

The first RED was a surprise hit when it was released in 2010. The sequel comes out on July 19th.

Let’s roll the clips below:

Red 2, the sequel to 2010 action-comedy, has yet to be released, but Summit Entertainment must really be banking on its success…seeing as they have green lit the development of Red 3.

Red 2 won’t be released in theaters until mid-July, but Summit refuses to sit on their hands waiting for the money to roll in. The studio has already rehired Red and Red 2 writers Jon and Erich Hoeber to begin development of the third installment based off the comic mini-series written by Warren Ellis. Details are scarce, as they would be for a sequel not even written yet, but the return of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary Louise-Parker is a sure bet.

Even with something this early in development, the studio has already made the first step in the right direction, bringing Jon and Erich back to write. The duo made the first Red a successful adaptation and Red 2 should continue the trend of former government agents and Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis.

Red 2 is in theaters everywhere July 19th, 2013.

New Stills From The Set Of ‘RED 2’

Those Retired & Extremely Dangerous agents from various secret government organizations are back for another round in Red II. Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is directing with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren are reprising their roles. This time around the gang is taking on some European villains including Catherine Zeta-JonesByung-Hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) and Anthony Hopkins.

The first film was a fun romp and I expect this one to carry on that tradition of humor laced with bullets and explosions. Check out some on set pictures of the cast.

Red 2 hits theater screens on August 2, 2013.

Zeta-Jones and Lee Join Black-Ops for ‘RED 2’

It seems that there’s some movement on the sequel to RED, the 2010 action film about retired group of former CIA assassins caught up in a government conspiracy.

According to Screenrant, Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro) and Byung-hun Lee (from the G.I. Joe movies) have been cast in the sequel, which will follow the retired assassins from the first film on a new adventure where “they use their old-school style to take on a new set of enemies all across Europe.”

First film stars Bruce Willis, (Dame) Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich are back to get their kill on. Mary-Louise Parker, as Willis’ civil servant love interest, will also be back. No word yet on if supporting players Karl Urban and Brian Cox will also be in part 2.

So this is good news. The first RED was a really solid effort that had cool action and a lot of hilarity. It should be interesting to see what Dean Parisot (director of Galaxy Quest) can do with the material, Parisot is stepping in for Robert Schwentke in the director’s chair.

RED 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on August 2, 2013.

‘Red’ Sequel Gets Director

Now that the sparkling vampires and shirtless werewolves are almost behind us (I’m referring to the Twilight series), Summit Entertainment will have to tap into another film property to make bank. The production company plans to reunite Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman for Red 2 – a sequel to the 2010 comic-book adaptation about ex-spies coming out of retirement for some rogue mayhem.

The quartet is expected to return for the sequel, although no deals are signed and sealed. Dean Parisot, however, is in final negotiations to direct.

It’s been a few years since Parisot has been behind the director’s chair. His last directorial gig  was 2005’s Fun With Dick and Jane, starring Jim Carrey. Before you cup your hand to your mouth and make a fart noise, keep in mind the CAA-repped director is also known for helming 1999’s action comedy Galaxy Quest. I think most nerds would give that film a thumbs up.

While Red barely delivered on it’s ideology of “You’re never too old for mayhem”, much of the enjoyment came from seeing veteran/fan-favorite actors thoroughly embody cartoon-like characters. So, I wouldn’t mind seeing this crew come around again for a little more light-hearted violence. Parisot seems viable enough to make a entertaining follow-up to G-Men going wild.

Could the Next Dr. Who be Helen Mirren?

There has been some talk about the next Doctor and who should play the role in the Dr. Who series. Many people, myself included, think that after 11 regenerations and almost 50 years, it was time for a female Doctor. In this NerdBastards wildest dreams I never thought it might be Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren. It seem she is more than willing to step into the famous Time Lord’s shoes, having recently been quoted by the Daily Star as saying:

“I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick.”

Now there is a pretty immediate opening for a companion coming up with the current Dr. Who companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill)—who are also widely (and lovingly) known as ”the Ponds”—are set to leave the show in a ”heartbreaking end” as reported by showrunner Steven Moffat.

Is Matt Smith ready to leave? Who knows! Oddly enough, the actor recently listed the legendary actress as someone he’d love to see on the show:

”Helen Mirren would be great in Doctor Who. Also Eric Cantona and Vincent Cassel—he would be number one actually.”

Helen recently rocked the house in Red as the CIA trained super spy assassin. I think she could handle the action of the Dr. Who series.

What do you NerdBastards think, is she up to the role, do you even want a woman to take a crack at the Doctor?
