Every new incarnation of DC Comics’ The Joker puts the internet into a tizzy. Love it or hate it, each iteration of the classic Batman villain delves deeper into the character’s psyche and stretches the possibilities of what the character means to the caped crusader. Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie announcement is no different. Outcries of support and disagreement are littering the social media highways with equal fervor. More level heads sit back and take a ‘wait and see’ approach before casting out their opinions. With the release of the first test footage of Phoenix’s Joker, the internet has some strong opinions. As we take a look at the newest interpretation of Gotham City’s clown prince of crime, we also look back on some of the most extreme and versions of The Joker that most deviated from the source material – whether fans liked it or not.
Yesterday, it was announced that Jared Leto will lead in a Spider-Verse spin-off film about one bloodsucking baddie: Morbius. Releasing Venom later this year and announcing Morbius now, it seems Sony is setting up for a cinematic universe of their own. The film will be directed by Daniel Espinosa, director of Safe House and Life. With his last two films being thrillers, it’ll be interesting to see where his direction leads Morbius. In December 2014, the cast of Suicide Squad was announced with Jared Leto starring as The Joker. Fans were highly anticipating Leto’s Joker performance as he’s known as a method actor that refuses to leave character while filming. Same was said about Heath Ledger, and he is said to be the best portrayal of The Joker on screen. One could say the casting of Jared Leto as Joker was the highlight because as time went on his work has became under-appreciated.
Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker might have been divisive for the fan community…but for DC and Warner Brothers it was good enough for a second round. Leto first played The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and promptly stole every scene he was in. This is one of two Joker films looking to start production in the next year or so. The DCEU is starting to get as crowded as the MCU.
Word around the Internet cooler this morning is that Jared Leto is in talks with Sony to take on the lead character role of Bloodshot based on the Valiant Entertainment comic created by Kevin Vanhook and Yvel Guichet in 1992. This is part of an overall five picture deal that includes other Valiant titles which would conclude with a hero combining final film Harbinger Wars. Jared Leto has enjoyed a lot of infamy for the way he supposedly acted on the Suicide Squad set, going to bizarre levels of method acting by sending used condoms, dead rats and other disgusting bric-a-brac to castmates. But if the following news is true, it makes you wonder how he’ll get into character for a reboot of TRON. Will he be gifting old Atari joysticks? A Walkman with a broken rewind button, perhaps? Who can say with a weirdo like Leto, but one thing’s for sure, if the rumours are true and Disney‘s working on a new TRON with him at the centre, the people are going to have some strong feelings about it. Suicide Squad wasn’t even out of theaters before Warner Bros. doubled down on a spin-off movie for Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn. The character stole the movie right out from under the other characters including Jared Leto‘s Mr. J. Now word is making the Internet rounds that Warner Bros. has brought on a talented script writer that’s been making the Black List (the list of the best un-produced scripts of the year) since 2012. Best known for Shut In starring Naomi Watts that just hit theaters this weekend, Christina Hodson has also had her hand in the new The Fugitive, and a Bumblebee solo movie. (more…)
On Monday, rumor had it that Jared Leto would be reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime sooner rather than expected, which had many DC fans quite excited. Suicide Squad, which didn’t feature a whole lot of Jared Leto’s version of The Joker, who has expressed extreme displeasure with the lackluster use of his character for all the time he put in. Those of us who liked his take on the character were looking forward to the possibility of him showing up in future films in the universe. Well, it seems that we now have a possible answer to our desires.
Word is that Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club) has joined the cast of director Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner sequel. Leto joins an already bulging cast that includes Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Lenny James, Ana de Armas, Dave Bustista, David Dastmalchian, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Barkhad Abdi, and Hiam Abbass.
