Characters getting killed off on Game of Thrones happens so much and so often that it has left many viewers numb to each new death. Making each new death a little less shocking and lowering the emotional impact when compared to the last. That, however, was not the case with a certain someone met their unexpected and brutal departure in the final moments of the season 5 finale.

The death of this character has sent GOT fans into a fury, many believe it’s not true – that the character will return next season. This is largely based on fan theories from the Game of Thrones books by author George R.R. Martin, who left enough implications and bread crumbs to lead people to believe the fan-favorite character has a much larger story to tell post his Julius Caesar like demise.

All this hub-bub has gone so far that the President of the United States himself, Barack Obama, to get confirmation of death.

*Note: if somehow you’ve managed to swear off the internet these last few weeks and haven’t seen the GOT Season 5 finale, let this be your only SPOILER WARNING.  (more…)

Game of Thrones has long made fans understand that no character is safe. George R. R. Martin seemingly kills any character which he sees, doing away with what’s expected and instead putting the characters through a meat grinder as we make our way to the eventual conclusion of the tale. There’s always lots of speculation about who’ll make it to end of each book and even who’ll still be alive by the time we see the end of book 7. It’s all just been theories on internet message boards with nothing to back it up beyond obscure clues and references within the various books themselves. (more…)

direwolves

You couldn’t swing a battle ax without hitting some Game of Thrones news these days. Hmm, might have something to do with the show’s return this Sunday, or we all secretly –  or not so secretly – wished we lived in a land of direwolves and dragons. Speaking of, have you ever wanted your own direwolf? Duh! Of course you have, who hasn’t!? Your dream might just become reality if you look into the American Alsatian Breeders Association’s Dire Wolf Project. Breed founder Lois Schwarz says the purpose of the project is to bring the look of the now extinct dire wolf – okay, so they’re not exactly the direwolves of Westeros – into a domesticated dog breed. Since no genetic material of the long gone dire wolf exists they’re using American Alsatians because of their shaggy, wolf-like appearance, large size – they can reach 130 lbs! – and calm, friendly demeanor. Go check out Wired’s report – including adorable puppy pictures! – for more info.

And also from Wired, what are the chances The Wall that protects the southern realms from wights and white walkers could actually exist? As it is in the books as well as the television series? Not very likely. Wired spoke with engineer Mary Albert of the Ice Drilling Program Office at Dartmouth College who said,

Even at very cold temperatures, large ice masses deform under their own weight. And over long time scales, ice flows, so it would not hold its original shape for thousands of years.

Hmm, not looking very good for the 700+ ft structure. Assuming it even was possible to construct a wall of ice on this massive scale physicist Martin Truffer of the University of Alaska Fairbanks adds,

You would need a slope of at least 1 to 20 to stop significant deformation. So to keep it 700 feet high, I would estimate that wall to be about 40 times that in width.

There’d be no way anyone could break through that wall! Or, come anywhere near it since it would occupy such a large chunk of the north. Thankfully, in George R.R. Martin‘s world we can just chalk up The Wall’s existence and integrity to magic. Aw yeah, magic.

Hit the jump to read what showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have to say about looking forward to Season 4 – damn! Season 3 hasn’t even aired, yet! – plus Daenerys’ new reality show, and Jon Snow’s rap about the Night’s Watch.

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” In exactly one week from today, HBO’s hit series ‘Game of Thrones‘ will return for its second season with the echo of swords clashing throughout the realm. As the second season prepares to debut, are you caught up on all the shenanigans of season 1? If you don’t have the time to sit and watch every episode of the 1st Season, then luckily for you HBO has put together  a 22-minute video recap narrated by show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as by actors Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen)Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister aka the ”Imp”) and Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister).

If you were hiding under a rock all this time on the backstabs and politics of season 1 then  this video is perfect for you, but if not then just watch it for the small spoilers and glimpses of Season 2.

Game of Thrones Season 2 is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings, the second book from his A Song of Ice and Fire saga

War is coming. Are you ready?

Guys, there’s only 18 more days until Game of Thrones returns to HBOApril 1st will be here before we know it! Which is great, because with The Walking Dead ending this weekend we’ll need a new series to obsess over, stat.

The internet has been littered with images and trailers hyping the return of the epic fantasy series and now, thanks to The Wrap, we’ve got some details and plot summaries for the first five episodes. They’re not super spoilery, but they do contain specifics so if you’d like to remain untainted, I wouldn’t look at ’em. Otherwise, we have some character profiles for Daenerys, Jon Snow, Renly Baratheon, and Joffrey, as well as a video about the weaponry of Westeros below the cut. Just jump to the end to skip the episode summaries.

Above you can see the first teaser poster released for the second season of Game of Thrones. The design isn’t super exciting, but it in no way dampens my excitement for the show’s return. And yes, war is coming and I’m anticipating it will blow our minds.

For proof of the epic scale and grandeur HBO is hoping to achieve this season check out the latest behind-the-scenes, making-of video they’ve released. This one follows Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the men of the Night’s Watch as they travel north of the wall. Or as we call it on Earth, Iceland.

Damn. That looks cold.

Something about Game of Thrones I think is just awesome is how real the whole world feels. Yes, it’s a fantasy novel and yes these places don’t really exist, but they ways George R.R. Martin described them and the way to crew of HBO’s series have recreated them, it’s astounding.

Game of Thrones returns April 1st.
