Those leaked e-mails from Sony are the gift that keep on giving. Not only did they shed light on the reality that Sony is struggling with what exactly they want to do with the Spider-Man franchise, it seems that all the bad ideas in the studio’s development department are not reserved for your friendly neighborhood web-slinger. In a world where cash is king and studios are so risk averse that anything with even the slightest bit of name cachet is more likely to get investment than a provocative original idea, some people at Sony thought it was fish in a barrel time when they considered teaming up two of their biggest franchises. One is Men in Black, the veritable action comedy series about alien policing secret agents. The other is 21/22 Jump Street, the action comedy about doofus cops who work undercover at high school then college. What could possibly go wrong? (more…)

Westworld

When word broke last year that J.J Abrams’ Bad Robot had teamed up with Jonah Nolan to bring the 70’s classic Sci-fi movie Westworld to HBO as a television series, I was excited, but also concerned about how seriously those in charge would take the production. Would it be a campy look-back and laugh, or would it be too serious, just another gritty reboot? Now that word has leaked that none other than acting heavy wieght Sir Anthony Hopkins will have a starring role in the series, my concerns are beginning to dwindle.  (more…)

2014 is halfway over.

For many film fans, this realization will be met with the usual impatient reaction of “can’t we just get to Fall and the good stuff already?” However, if I’m being completely honest, it’s somewhat surprising that it isn’t September by now. My year has been a blur; a frightening reminder that, though it may have moments of interminability, existence is ultimately finite and perpetually chugging toward oblivion, no matter how much I might’ve been entertained along the way.

But you didn’t click on this article to read my existential ramblings. What you really want to know is: what made up the best of the best of the first six months of 2014? Like every year, there was gold to be mined at the local cineplex, art house, on TV, VOD and via the numerous repertory lines established by studios to release their respective back catalogues. Sometimes the gifts are so great that an EOY list just will not suffice. You need a guide to the riches you might’ve missed during the first part of the calendar year as well. Thankfully, I’m looking out for your interests and have compiled the Bastards Guide to Entertainment — a fifteen slot list that details the superlative pieces of cinematic and televised entertainment this year has offered thus far. We all knew that This is the End would be filled with inappropriately hysterical humor ranging from the usual pot smoking / drug use jokes to masturbation, and beyond. Now we’ve got a NSFW clip of what could be one of the funniest looks at what happens to a bunch of guys stuck in a house with no women at the end of the world.

When a movie stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride, the question isn’t will they talk about masturbation, it’s how quickly will they get to it. I’m already sold on seeing this movie in the theater with what I’ve already seen.

This Is the End hits theater screens June 12th.

The film follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside.  Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

If you watched the Red Band Trailer for This is the End you’ve seen Emma Watson pop in and threaten James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson with a gory axe induced death. Now we’ve got a clip of a slightly calmer Emma sharing her thoughts on what the heck is going on outside. Take a look and then we’ll discuss it below.

Zombies, that’s what Emma thinks. That ignores all the other crazy lights and sink holes and explosions happening around them though. What’s truly humorous about this scene is how the guys are reacting to Emma. Suddenly this “sausage fest” of an apocalypse has a new member and she, although disheveled and dirty is still drop dead gorgeous. I can’t wait to see those guys go nuts trying to garner her attention while the world ends around them.

Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Super-Bad), This is the End is unsurprisingly just another one of a string of apocalypse comedies coming out. It’s the sheer amount of celebrities playing themselves in this cast that marks This is the End as a must see. There are going to be a ton of cameos including, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Mindy Kaling, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Martin Star, Kevin Hart, and Jason Trost.

This is the End hits theater screens on June 12th.

It all started back in 2007 with a short film Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Jason Stone. The short stars Rogen and Jay Baruchel. It’s never been released to the public, but the trailer (Below) was put out and soon plans were made to convert it to the big screen.
Let’s start with the Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse trailer to give you the idea. There’s a great intro to the teaser by Seth and James Franco that’s worth a look by itself.

There’s lots more stars added to the mix for the big screen version though, Seth Rogen, Emma Watson, Jonah Hill, Rihanna, Craig Robinson, James Franco and Jay Baruchel. The movie looks like a lot of fun with the actors playing themselves.

What did you think? I’m putting this on my list of movies to check out in 2013.

The second trailer for Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained has hit the Internet and everything points to this film being one hell of a fun ride. There’s gonna be action, humor, quick-quips from smirking lips, and some serious social undertones to discuss.

My favorite part, I spit soda across my monitor, was Jonah Hill‘s cameo appearance and scene in the trailer. I couldn’t stop laughing, but I’m sure there are going to be lots of other scenes like that in the film.

The film stars Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kerry Washington, Kurt Russell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L Jackson and lots of other cameos like Jonah Hill.

The movie hits theater screen on December 25th 2012. Will your butt be in a theater seat for this one?
