Mass Effect

When fans held a rousing internet roast for Sonic The Hedgehog’s movie design, almost no one would have guessed the studio’s response. Merely a few days after the full trailer release, Paramount Animations revealed they were planning to do a full redesign before the movie came out. Horrifyingly, that’s only a short 6 months away. And considering how much time will go to finishing production, it’ll likely be even less for the poor artists on the project.

Just from a pop culture standpoint, this was met with an uproarious amount of people saying that they’re sad Paramount is trying to fix the shit movie they were excited to see. All the memes that will never see the light of day truly breaks any internet troll’s heart.

Videogame tie-in novels get a bad rap. Sure, they’re often cynical cash-ins that get farted out by games studios periodically to milk cash from innocent, story-hungry gamers, but they aren’t all terrible. In fact, in recent years big names in the Science fiction and fantasy community have come forward, recognising the creative opportunities of playing in other people’s imagined worlds and shedding light on the stories that lurk in the background of their favourite game series. Mass Effect, the sprawling RPG with limitless potential for storytelling, just signed up a new author to pen their latest novel, and they may have just won the jackpot.

Each and every week we scour the Internet for nothing but the best in nerdy art. We leave no digital stone unturned, we poke and prod every nook and cranny of the Interwebz. Why? Because we love you, and we love to bring you weekly feed of nerd art. On with the dump!

J-Estacado must really love the work of famed pin-up artist Gil Elvgren, so much so that he made his own tribute piece to Gil with DC Comics Zatanna in place of Gil’s girls. He really nails it too, right down to the black negligee she has on in the tribute piece. Now that’s some real magic. [Nudity and Nerdery]

Jeremy Barlow has written Star Wars comics, Mass Effect comics, Deathlok, and more, but this time he’s taking us out west with R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned, a prequel to the R.I.P.D. movie that will star Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds when it debuts this summer.

I spoke to Barlow about picking up where Peter Lenkov left off with R.I.P.D., what he thinks about the future of Star Wars, the possibility of more Deathlok, going freelance, and what it takes to write a comic book.  (more…)

A film adaptation of the kick-ass and amazingly popular Mass Effect game series has been in development in one form or another since 2008, but so far there’s little to show for it.  As is common with these projects, the studio got one guy to do the script, found it to be not in line with their vision of the movie and then moved on to have someone else rewrite it.

Previously working on the script was Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend), but now Legendary Pictures has set Morgan Davis Foehl to the task.  Foehl is best known for being unknown, working as an assistant editor on many projects, most of them incredibly forgettable.  BUT… he is supposed to be a very big Mass Effect fan.  So at least that’s something, right?

It remains to be seen whether this “big fan” will be able to put together something that will both entice the studio to hand over monies as well as appease fans that, as most people know, almost rioted because they didn’t like the way the third installment of the series ended.  But at least they’re working on it, so in a few more months fans may have some more news on whether it will finally move ahead or get shelved until the next Mass Effect game release generates more interest.

Thanks to collider for the heads-up.

ABOVE:  Where is the line between being cute/playful and official creeper status? In the case of interacting with sexy female Cosplays, that can difficult to determine. Regardless, there should always be a level of common sense and decency. NYC-based freelance fashion and costume designer and illustrator Mandy Caruso tells us when too far is too far and when guys need to “stop talking”. She attended New York Comic Con last weekend as Black Cat and had, well,  a rather uncomfortable experience with a insensitive interviewer. Read her comments via the link. [GeeksAreSexy]
