‘Mega Man’ Is Coming To The Big Screen

Gamers across the globe may be able to connect in ways that were not possible back in the 80’s, in games that get even more realistic and immersive with each generation.  Seriously, have you seen that Halo 5 opening cinematic? It is incredible.  Still, there is little argument against the belief that some of the best games ever made were given birth during the Golden Age of Console Gaming.  One of the games that is held in such high esteem is the absolutely wonderful Mega Man.  Not only did the game lead to over 50 sequels/versions over multiple platforms that seemed to get better with each entry, but the 8-bit hero also inspired several comic book titles, a couple of animated series, a novel, and even several soundtracks that fans have scrambled to collect.  Today, word has it that the battle robot is set for another big adventure, this time, on the big screen. We’ve had a lot of Evil Dead news this week, and in many ways, Ash isn’t all that different from Mega Man: they both have one hand made of fingers and one hand made of a tool, they both have an arch-nemesis that’s wild-eyed and crazy evil (Dr. Wily & The Necronomicon, now THERE’S a buddy-cop movie I’d pay to see), and they both say “Groovy” a lot (I’m assuming here a bit on Mega-Man’s behalf).  Now they share something else in common: they both have TV shows in the works! Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

ABOVE: Nerd Bastards has it’s very own beer. Unfortunately, this isn’t for purchase. It’s just something I brewed here locally in Boston, MA and had our very own Jeremy Hudson whip up the sweet label you see. Bitch’n Bespin Brau is a Saison style beer, which is a french farmhouse inspired brew. It’s rebellious, yet FORCEful. Maybe we’ll have to organize a fan meet-up so that y’all can try it.

Imagine a place where you can be yourself, free of judgement. Where you can talk, laugh and play with thousands of like minded individuals. A place where you can be in a state of child like wonder, previewing and sampling the latest offerings in gaming culture. A place where you can have a beer and get down with your nerd self listening to some Nerdcore. A place where you can meet – take photos with or possibly take home – some nerdy girlie, or geeky guy dressed up as an iconic character. Ultimately, a place where everyone is drumming to the tune of “lets play”. This my friends, is a little slice of nerdy heaven, and it is called PAX.

For the uninitiated, PAX is the great American gaming experience, held annually on the west and east coasts. It’s an event for gamers, by gamers. 70,000+ congregate to play to their hearts content (console, PC, or tabletop), peruse an E3 style exhibition floor (Publishers and Developers showcasing their latest wares), attend informative/entertaining panels, and rock out with their joysticks out at one of the many evening concerts. It’s truly an experience like none other.

So, anyway, PAXEast happened this past weekend in Boston, MA. This Nerd Bastard, along with my friend Phil, were in attendance, albeit briefly. A 3 day event, and our schedule only permitted us to attend a few hours on Saturday. Regardless, I took in enough to comment. I’d like to share my journey into gamer paradise with you, and discuss what juicy reveals are worthy of you’re attention.

Though I am an avowed fan, sometimes amateur/fan/concept trailers and shorts look exactly like amateur undertakings, but the two I saw today blew my mind out my ear hole, so I wanted to share them with you.

Up first, Pac-Man: The Movie. The people at Steelhouse Digital seemed to spare no expense on this one and they have put together a high octane Pac Man adaptation that positions the hungry yellow fellow as a part of a government defense experiment. Tons of shout-outs to Pac-lore are contained within and the digital effects on this are outstanding, specifically those that occur within the “maze”.

As I said, it seemed like Steelhouse spared no expense on their Pac Man short, but on this Mega Man X concept from Olan Rodgers, only $700 left his pocket. Watch the video, then re-read that with a slack jaw. Seriously top men need to get on the task of getting Mr. Rodgers a job, TOP MEN.

They still make fighter games?

It’s hard to believe that the Street Fighter franchise hasn’t jumped the video game shark waaaaaayyy before this. Street Fighter X Tekken is sure making a good case that the shark is jumped, then backed over multiple times.

Joining the battle are Mega Man,

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.

I gotta cut in here. This isn’t the cute Mega Man you all know and love . . . this is the Hobo Mega Man down at the corner whose breath smells like feet and Old Spice.

                                                                      Pac Man,

OK, it’s Pac Man with robot armor, not Tony Stark armor, more like Fred Sanford armor. (Google him ya young whippersnappers)

Cole from Infamous, and some Japanese cat mascots Kuro and Toro. These fighters will be exclusive to the PS3 and PS Vita versions. Who knows what you might get for the other platforms, maybe the PC version will get all of them?

The Interwebz is a great place for nerdy art and the like. A lot of the time it’s fuckin’ weird shit like ATAT on ATAT humping, Fisto from Masters of the universe actually fisting and other crazy shit like that. But there are a lot of awesome things that we see on a daily basis, and we’re lazy nerd bastards so we just round them all up once a week for your nerdgasm art lovin’.

Above: Fighting the Empire is tough. The rebels you need some sex appeal to reel in the new batch of  heroes. With Princess Leia methods of persuasion, thes new recruits will always be filling the X-wings.

So…most gamers like the Mega Man game franchise, but youtube sensation Egoraptor fucking loves it. Particularly Mega Man X.

He loves that game so much that he made a hugely funny youtube video. Titled “Sequelitis – Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X”, Egoraptor gives you a brief history on each game, while discussing inherent rules about how video games should operate. All with fun cartoon inserts.

It’s funny, informative and factual.

[WARNING: This does contain a few itty bitty swear words, but who really cares?]

Games really have improved over the years, even if those improvements are jumping off walls and riding on cars. God, watching this makes me want to dig up the old Nintendo and spend my evening shooting lemons

Be sure to check out more of Egoraptor’s work at youtube or newgrounds.com
