Ever since realizing that people who buy video games also buy other things, Hollywood has been eager to get its greasy mitts all over that elusive gaming dollar. The only problem? With a couple of exceptions, games based on films are usually awful. The solution, you would have thought, would be to pick on a game with cinematic visuals, strong characters and a good, simple storyline to explore. Or you could pick a game with no plot at all, no characters and where everything is comprised of blocks. There is a lot of cocaine in Hollywood. We gamers, in our never ending quest to find and play the best games available, have learned to accept certain unfortunate things in our games. Bugs, design oddities, and absurdly condescending tutorials are among the bigger sins, but there is something even MORE evil than all of that. I’m referring, of course, to shitty gameplay mechanics. Minecraft, Mojang’s wildly successful EVERYTHING simulator, is one of modern gaming’s most profound success stories. It’s responsible for countless hours of creative, highly social fun for gamers of all ages and denominations and, for my money, is one of the greatest examples of what gaming can and should be. Turkey, at the completion of a month long investigation, begs to differ and may move to ban the game on their soil. Their argument claims that, with the need to combat mobs (on adventure mode), the game carries too heavy a focus on violence, despite its proven record as an educational and social tool. (more…)

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

Above: A Realistic take on The Enderman, one in a series of Minecraft characters designed by Deviant Art user DevBurmak. Once you remove the pixels from the survival creation game the mobs are a bit more terrifying than we would have expected. Look at this all you want too, but for the love of Notch don’t look him in the eyes. [Geek Tyrant]
