pacific rim 2
The Pacific Rim sequel, now called Pacific Rim: Uprising, is presently before the cameras in Australia. The cameras are being overseen by accomplished cinematographer Dan Mindel, whose talented eye has been used on Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so naturally he’s a man who’s proud of his work. Like many in the entertainment business, he shares that work with updates on social media, but a recent post on Instagram might have shared more than the impression that Mindel is having fun on the set of the giant robots versus giant aliens sequel. If it’s Friday, then it’s time for a completely random casting announcement for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, the upcoming sequel to Pacific Rim. Last Friday it was announced that Cailee Spaeny, an actress with three credits on IMDb to her name, had joined the cast, and now, in another “Who’s that…?” moment, the production is adding Levi Meaden to a line-up of that includes John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and presumably a number of other cast members from the first film. So who is Meaden, and who is he playing? Excellent questions that are unlikely to be answered any time soon. (more…)
It looks like one of the original stars of Pacific Rim will not be suiting back up for the sequel. It’s being reported that Charlie Hunnam will not be coming back to reprise his role as Raleigh Brackett, who was the main character of the first film. In a way it’s a little disappointing since Hunnam did a decent job in the first film. However, because it’s already known that Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor, John Boyega, has already taken the lead, it’s not really that much of a loss. Thanks for playing Charlie Hunnam.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was a surprise when it came out. The flick showing giant robot going mano a mano with giant Kaijus was a surprise hit back in 2013. It had all the elements a summer blockbuster could have. Giant monsters, check. End of the world, check. Kickass Independence Day-style speech by the leader, check. Although the film did not gross as high as it wanted domestically, the film did well overseas and has gained a cult following. As a result, it’s no surprise that a sequel would be greenlit. But when would we get this new film? Looks like we now have a release date.
Everybody’s got to have two franchises these days. It almost seems like a joke, but if you look at any number of talented young actors in Hollywood it seems like they’ve got to balance appearances in two franchises or film series along with their regular acting in other film roles, TV projects or stage work. In that spirit, John Boyega has gone out and secured himself another major role. Not only does he fill the boots of Finn, reluctant Resistance fighter and reformed Stormtrooper in the new Star Wars trilogy, but now he has been called to cancel the Apocalypse – again – in the upcoming Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. Ever since Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim has been in the works, there has been promises of a sequel, and mind you this was even before the film hit theaters, but Pacific Rim 2 has been stuck in development since 2014. Originally the sequel was scheduled for a 2017 release date with production said to start in 2015. But Pacific Rim 2 was eventually pushed back by Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures and production was delayed with no confirmation on when they’d start.
Pacific Rim fans have certainly been yanked around the last couple of years since the original film’s 2013 release. First there was the nail-biting box office watch to make it economically viable, then there was the wait for the greenlight, Guillermo del Toro‘s teasing about potential sequel storylines, a shifting slate of screenwriters, the officially announcement that Pacific Rim 2 will arrive in 2017, and then came the news that no, it will not. And just when you though it was safe to write off the possibility that Pac Rim 2 will ever become a reality, comes word that the show’s back on, but with an new director at the helm in the form of the man behind TV’s Spartacus and Daredevil. Love him or loathe him, you’ve got to give writer/director Guillermo del Toro credit – the man doesn’t seem to have much quit in him. Even though Universal Studios recently took Pacific Rim 2 completely off its calendar of upcoming releases, he went ahead and submitted a script and budget request to the studio anyhow.
Pacific Rim 2 may be in a state of indefinite delay, but that hasn’t stopped people from playing around with different ideas regarding the movie. Even Guillermo del Toro has been playing around with ideas, and ever since he joined the Twitterverse, he hasn’t been afraid to share some of them. He recently sat down with someone and thinks she deserves her own Jaeger. Any idea who this person is? You’ll never guess who it is.
Time to take those frowns and turn them upside down! Earlier this week it was reported that Pacific Rim 2 was going to be delayed for quite some time, and by some time we mean indefinitely. However, things have taken a turn as Guillermo del Toro has since then responded to the outcry that has resulted in the “delay.” So climb aboard and hold onto something tight as we continue on the roller coaster ride that is Pacific Rim 2.
