As April Ludgate on the cult favorite sitcom Parks and Recreation, and Julie Powers in Edgar Wright‘s 2010 film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Aubrey Plaza has essentially made a name for herself as Nerddom’s bitter, misanthropic sweetheart. She has accomplished the rare feat of combining an acid tongue and dour demeanor with an undeniable, and almost inexplicable appeal.
Sound like anyone the Internet knows?
That’s right: The sour-faced feline actually named Tardar Sauce, but better known by her “stage name”–Grumpy Cat–will star in her own Christmas special on the cable network Lifetime, and Ms. Plaza will provide the online phenomenon’s voice. More after the jump: (more…)
It was only a matter of time until Patton Oswalt‘s off the cuff Star Wars VII Filibuster rant speech from TV’s Parks and Recreationgot mixed, dubbed, or animated; maybe all three at once. It was an amazing single take of on-the-spot-improvisational television. Daniel Spellman took on the task of animating Patton’s brilliance for the Nerdist, and dammit, he did a damn fine job. Take a look at the video below and then let us know what you think or your favorite part in the comments section below.
Karen Gillan, a fan favorite Doctor Who companion for several seasons on the hit BBC show, has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. The production is headed towards a late-June start date and will shoot on location in the U.K. with director James Gunn in charge.
The Guardians of the Galaxy casting has been in high gear with the recent casting of Glenn Close as the head of the Nova Corps. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista lead the cast of Marvel’s space adventure movie, Gillan joins Lee Pace and Michael Rooker as the villains of the piece. While her character name/role have not been revealed yet, it’s widely thought that she will play the lead female villain.
The casting so far has been very interesting, bringing in actors and actresses from some of the most successful and fan-centric franchises. The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Parks and Recreation associations will bring fans in fans from across the spectrum.
What do you think? What Marvel character is Gillan going to play?
Mr. Oswalt, my hat is off to you. In the same week you give us your beautiful statement about the tragedy at the Boston Marathon, and your fantastic turn as The Penguin, there’s this. An imaginative, hilarious, and in some ways, plausible pitch for Star Wars Episode VII J.J. Abrams would be a fool to ignore. Patton Oswalt will be a guest on this week’s Parks and Recreation and using the opportunity of a citizen filibuster at a city council meeting displays why he deserves to be crowned, King of the Nerds,
All completely improvised. Just. Wow. My only gripe – because being a nerd I’ve got to find fault somewhere – is the mispronunciation of Kashyyyk. Otherwise, flawless. I’m just in awe.
Oswalt’s episode of Parks and Rec will air this Thursday at 9pm on NBC.
