Since she first appeared as the most exciting part of the climactic battle in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gal Godot‘s portrayal of DC‘s epic Amazon warrior Wonder Woman, the nerd world has been obsessed with her. Expectations were hardly high for the movie, based on the quality of DC’s extended cinematic universe so far. On top of that, the film had to suffer being banned in Lebanon and boycotted by misogynists who felt left out of a small handful of women-only screenings. But despite all that, the film’s opening weekend was a roaring success, cleaning up at the box office and smashing into the mid-90s on its Rotten Tomatoes rating. (more…)

Wonder Woman

Now, this shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone, but this was pretty much Wonder Woman’s weekend. Given that the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been considered “curse,” and also the fact that many didn’t consider the film about the Amazonian princess to be marketed that much a little while ago, there was the possible fear that it would not be as successful as studio heads hoped. Rest assured, Wonder Woman was a powerhouse! The first DCEU film that was critically and commercially successful (scoring a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes: a tie with Iron Man and The Dark Knight), it cleaned up shop this weekend at the Box Office.

We really haven’t heard much from Patty JenkinsWonder Woman since the trailer a few weeks ago, but last night Warner Bros. dropped a couple new TV spots to help tide us over until the Guardians of the Galaxy hub-bub dies down. Seriously, why bother trying to be heard in all that wonderful Marvel madness, it would be a waste of good money. Now when May 8th hits, expect the Wonder Woman marketing floodgates to open. Until then, we might get a few dribs and drabs and even those look very promising, Patty Jenkins should deliver quite the DC movie, perhaps the best to date. (more…)

Sources have confirmed the main villain in the upcoming Wonder Woman film will be Ares, the God of Conflict.  Although trailers have revealed most of the action appearing to take place on the battlefields of World War I, speculation has abounded that the Amazon superheroine would have a more formidable, super-powered rival in her solo big screen debut. Although actor Danny Huston has been cast as an antagonist of some kind, it’s unclear whether or not he and Ares, one of her primary antagonists from the comic books, will be one and the same or perhaps one working in service of the other.  (more…)

There’s a new International trailer out for director Patty JenkinsWonder Woman starring Gal Gadot. While most won’t understand the Russian, there’s no misunderstanding the action in the film that is being promoted heavily overseas and that is just the way things should be. There’s no trying to tie this movie into a larger DC Cinematic Universe, this movie is about strangely enough, Wonder Woman. Imagine that. Hopefully Patty Jenkins will continue to be able to fend off all the studio executive’s notes trying to shoehorn anything and everything Justice League into the movie.  (more…)

There’s been a flurry of Internet angst over the critical reviews of David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad. The embargo on review postings lifted and the early news from critics was not good. Currently Suicide Squad has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and some fans even started and then removed a petition which received over 15,000 signatures to remove Rotten Tomatoes from the internet of all things. It’s been a whirlwind of on social media and forum comments, often turning quite nasty very quickly. Director Patty Jenkins took a break from editing Wonder Woman to check out Warner Bros. and DC‘s latest superhero flick and came away confused. Confused at why those critics panned the film the way they did. (more…)
