Hey, do you remember Pinball – those coffin-shaped boxes where you hit a silver ball around a chaotic playfield? If you thought this game of skill died out in the 90’s, you’d be wrong. Sure, Pinball machines are no longer as prevalent in arcades, bowling alleys, or bars as they once were; but the culture of Pinball is alive and well. Despite the staggering decline in pinball gaming, new machines are being made all the time. Particularly to promote pop movie and television licenses; with such titles as: The Walking Dead, Star Trek, The Avengers, Game of Thrones, Ghostbusters and more.

If the Force isn’t strong in pinball, how about this… Stern Pinball has announced that it is making a special 40th anniversary Star Wars pinball machine!  (more…)

Now another big license is making its way into Pinball form – which can be best set up by saying this: When you play the Game of Thrones Pinball Machine, you win or you die (Or, just… y’know, put another coin in). (more…)

Most people aren’t enamored with the concept of documentaries. The premise of spending 1-2 hours watching a program under the guise of educational exploration is lost on those who’d rather have their entertainment be anything but. It’s true, there is a time for learning and there is a time for entertainment. A good documentary, however, does both. A good documentary will hook you with a prospective topic – something you’re mildly curious about or something you never knew you’d be interested in – and takes you on an enlightening journey that expands your mind, all whilst leaving you feel entertained. No one truly likes spending time learning stuff, but everyone does like feeling like the smartest guy/girl in the room. A good documentary leaves you feeling smarter and more informed, with the least amount of effort from you as possible.

The following entries make up some of the best, fascinating, and nerd approved documentaries that you can watch right now on Netflix. So sit back, relax, and be prepared to learn some shit via your Television or streaming mobile device.  (more…)

Whatever Happened To Pinball?

We drove through the street of Austin, and it was a part of town I didn’t recognize. Leaving our hotel, which was in the center of the commotion and driving a ways to this unknown place that I was told, “would be fun”, had every bit of my brain going on horror-movie mode. When we walk in my eyes get as big as saucers and all I can think is that I’m in heaven! Arcade Games as far as the eye can see, of course I search frantically for the Dance Dance Revolution game that is….OUT OF ORDER. My friend laughed at my face of disappointment and gives me a handful of tokens and I robotically follow further into the arcade. That is when I behold an eye-popping splash of lights, color and sound! Row upon, row of Pinball Machines from different films of my youth and current TV/film  lined the innards of the arcade.

I stood in front of one that was themed after the Batman Forever film, I put in 5o cents and pulled the ball release. I prayed I’d be decent… (more…)

As if console modder extraordinaire Ben Heckendorn wasn’t already deserving enough of nerd love, he goes and makes this. Yes, you’re reading it right. Bill Paxton Pinball. Not only is it a slick-looking pinball game, but it’s also jam-packed with soundbites from many of Paxton’s classic roles.

Heckendorn built it over the course of five years, even programming it himself. It is a joy to behold, and you can find out the story behind its creation on Heckendorn’s site. You can also check out a video of the machine in action below.

Just clean up after you’re done watching it.
