The Power Rangers are back. Lionsgate just released character posters featuring the actors from the film. This is big news for fans of a franchise that started over 23 years, when producer Haim Saban took footage from Japan’s Toei Company’s tokusatu series, Super Sentai. Using that footage intermixed with some original live-action scenes show, Saban found himself with a long-running franchise. It was a great setup for him: Use the Super Sentai footage, then dub in the American actors’ voices and – voila! – the Power Rangers were born. The show was an instant hit and became a staple of the Fox Network’s children’s programming; despite some objections from parents and other groups regarding violence depicted on the show, its popularity grew, and there were action figures, costumes, comics and movie spin-offs. Are you a Power Rangers fan? Do you wish you could see your favorite Power Rangers in action again? Yeah, sure, Lionsgate and Saban are rebooting the franchise right now, but that doesn’t involve the Rangers you grew up with. What about Karan Ashley, David Fielding, David Yost, Walter Jones, Austin St. John, Jonny Yong Bosch, Steve Cardenas, and Paul Schrier? What about Azim Rizik from Megaforce, Jason Faunt, Erin Cahill, Deborah Philips, and Daniel Southworth from Time Force, Blake Foster, Nakia Burrise, and Hilary Shepherd from Turbo, and Yoshi Sudarso from Dino Charge? Fortunately for you, these former Rangers have all teamed up again for a spy vs. spy actioner entitled The Order.
Anyone who grew up anywhere near the 90’s was at least peripherally aware of Power Rangers. Even if you weren’t a fan, you knew someone who was into it. Probably way too into it. Originally cobbled together by cutting some American actors into footage from the Japanese show Super Sentai, Power Rangers has had a total of 23 seasons on television in various incarnations and two feature films. Now, Power Rangers is being reimagined and updated and photos of their new superhero suits were just released to prove it.
So if you grew up with the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, prepare to have your mind blown in either a good or really bad way. The modern remake/reboot of the, can we say, classic Fox Kids‘ action show, Power Rangers, is presently shooting with an all-new group of fresh-faced youth chosen to be the protectors of the Earth with their martial arts skills and giant robots against the threat of Rita Repulsa. Enter the big Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Banks, who will be carrying Rita’s staff, but not be filling Rita’s traditional grey wig with massive pigtails. Nope, Banks’ Rita has gotten a significant makeover. (more…)
Since the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in 1993, the Power Rangers have gone through plenty of changes. From a bit of a darker, yet somehow just as cheesy (and wonderful…?) attempt back in 1995, to countless spinoffs that eventually led the entire franchise to drop the “Mighty Morphin” from their handle and take on the much easier moniker of “Power Rangers”. Generations of children have grown up with the Power Rangers and when it was announced that Saban, the producers of the original series, would be teaming with Lionsgate to reboot the series as a film franchise, the plan was met with a bit of skepticism. Today, as news continues to pour out of CinemaCon, the official logo for the film reboot was revealed and, all in all, it is not half bad. (more…)
You know the classic bridge to the guilty pleasure chorus of most seasoned nerds’ childhood: power and the force like you’ve never seen before, ability to morph to even up the score, no one can ever take them down (arguably) but if they do, they have their modular mech suits to save the day! The announcement of the newest Power Rangers team roster did tug at a lot of heartstrings in that certain nostalgic way, but the recent details about their newest transformations sound kind of…adventurous.
This is it! The day you’ve all been waiting for! Somewhere in Vancouver, on this very day, they have begun production on the all new, rebooted, big screen Power Rangers movie! After months of teasing, casting announcements of people we’ve never heard of, and the fake-out of the Joseph Khan R-rated Power Rangers no one knew they wanted, Power Rangers will soon be a reality. There’s still a full-year before we will be able to see these Rangers in theaters, but today, not only do we have a press release announcing the start of production, and a plot synopsis, we also have a candid photo of the new Rangers hanging out. Prepare to swoon. (more…)
