Power rangers

First there was the announcement, then there were castings, and now photos are being released as filming continues for the new Power Rangers movie. Unlike the Ghostbusters movie, the more information that get’s put out into the public, the more exciting the idea of this new Power Rangers team gets. Yesterday, the film released character posters. Overnight, a new photo featuring Rita (Elizabeth Banks) and Trini (Becky G) was released. If there’s anything to be learned from this new photo, it’s that this isn’t going to be the same Power Rangers some of us grew up watching.

Power Rangers Get Their Very Character Posters

The Power Rangers are back. Lionsgate just released character posters featuring the actors from the film. This is big news for fans of a franchise that started over 23 years, when producer Haim Saban took footage from Japan’s Toei Company’s tokusatu series, Super Sentai. Using that footage intermixed with some original live-action scenes show, Saban found himself with a long-running franchise. It was a great setup for him: Use the Super Sentai footage, then dub in the American actors’ voices and – voila! – the Power Rangers were born. The show was an instant hit and became a staple of the Fox Network’s children’s programming; despite some objections from parents and other groups regarding violence depicted on the show, its popularity grew, and there were action figures, costumes, comics and movie spin-offs.  (more…)

Little by little, it has become clear that this new Power Rangers movie is not going to be like the show many of us grew up watching as kids. It actually may be a little bit better. In fact, it just got a lot better because news just broke that Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm In The Middle) will be playing the mentor and somewhat spiritual guide to the Power Rangers, Zordon. Cranston took to Twitter to break the news himself which was then tweeted by the official Power Rangers twitter handle.

Franchises are a big deal today in the film industry. You have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Cinematic Universe, there are a ton of Transformer movies with ideas to incorporate other Hasbro names, and more. And now it looks like Lionsgate may be joining the club with a franchise of their own – the Power Rangers. There’s been very little regarding the new film, but it seems that Lionsgate CEO, Jon Feltheimer, is feeling pretty good about the movie that he made a statement earlier this week that the studio could potentially make upwards of seven other Power Ranger movies.

So if you grew up with the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, prepare to have your mind blown in either a good or really bad way. The modern remake/reboot of the, can we say, classic Fox Kids‘ action show, Power Rangers, is presently shooting with an all-new group of fresh-faced youth chosen to be the protectors of the Earth with their martial arts skills and giant robots against the threat of Rita Repulsa. Enter the big Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Banks, who will be carrying Rita’s staff, but not be filling Rita’s traditional grey wig with massive pigtails. Nope, Banks’ Rita has gotten a significant makeover. (more…)

Since the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in 1993, the Power Rangers have gone through plenty of changes. From a bit of a darker, yet somehow just as cheesy (and wonderful…?) attempt back in 1995, to countless spinoffs that eventually led the entire franchise to drop the “Mighty Morphin” from their handle and take on the much easier moniker of “Power Rangers”.  Generations of children have grown up with the Power Rangers and when it was announced that Saban, the producers of the original series, would be teaming with Lionsgate to reboot the series as a film franchise, the plan was met with a bit of skepticism. Today, as news continues to pour out of CinemaCon, the official logo for the film reboot was revealed and, all in all, it is not half bad. (more…)

You know the classic bridge to the guilty pleasure chorus of most seasoned nerds’ childhood: power and the force like you’ve never seen before, ability to morph to even up the score, no one can ever take them down (arguably) but if they do, they have their modular mech suits to save the day! The announcement of the newest Power Rangers team roster did tug at a lot of heartstrings in that certain nostalgic way, but the recent details about their newest transformations sound kind of…adventurous.
