Pryde’s Picks 5/7/14 – Comic Book Reviews

Holy geek-weekend hangover, Batman. Between the blue paint (I dressed up as Mystique) and loads of free comics, I barely made it out of Free Comic Book Day alive. This week, I took all your comments into consideration and focused less on the big boys and more on titles from Image and Darkhorse. Sit back and enjoy your comic book balance breakfast, courtesy of Pryde’s Picks.

This week, Marvel throws you on a roller coaster ride of emotions when they bring back Miles Morales and kill The Watcher. DC’s Batman titles fall more than a little short and Aquaman has me wondering why the hell anyone would care about him. Image stole the show this week with their unique and amazing titles Alex + Ada, Rat Queens and Nailbiter.  (more…)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock with Cyclops, you’ve probably heard the news about Marvel killing Wolverine. Recently, he’s been moping around the comics complaining about his lack of healing factor and emo-ing up some of my favorite stories. Well, Marvel is FINALLY doing the unthinkable… killing the one guy that is part of ever single team ever created. Good job, guys. I think the part that pisses me off the most is that every book released in September will be dedicated to mourning the most overrated X-Men to ever grace the pages. Yea, I said it… Come at me, Bub.

This week, Marvel tickled my fancy by giving a voice to two of it’s quietest and most enigmatic characters: The Watcher and Groot. DC failed on a whole new level when they decided to charge $4.99 for their not-so-“Secret Origins” book. Darkhorse decided to breathe new life into magic in the Buffyverse while Kirkman took my rage to an all new level with the anti-climactic wrap of of his “All Out War” book. (more…)

Thanks for taking a break from your chocolate bunny induced comas to join me for our weekly dose of geek rage. I want to apologize for this week’s completely Marvel and DC pull. The tops dogs had too much out to ignore so the indie books got dropped. I hope you can forgive me. Next week, I’ll try to make it up to you.

Marvel had me bored and confused with their Ultimate Fantastic Four and their handful of X-Men books. Their only saving grace this week was a relatively satisfying final issue of Superior Spider-man. DC tried to trick me into liking them by bringing my guilty pleasure The Metal Men into the Forever Evil story arc. They further seduced me with two delicious issues of Batman that left me wondering just how far Bruce Wayne will go for his boy Gordon?  (more…)

This week, Marvel has been putting in overtime pushing out all these #1s and I feel like I’m doing the same. Somehow, while frantically editing, I realized I left a flub in this week’s PP. I guess I’ve just been preoccupied with my class reunion at Neptune High. Last night, I was out WAY too late attending a showing of Veronica Mars at one of the only two theaters playing it in South Florida. The movie wasn’t life changing and mostly predictable but I did enjoy the cameos of every single character I ever loved. I know, you guys came here for comic book rage so lets get this thing started… (more…)

I don’t know about you all but I’m sick of the renumbering of books and the reboots. Instead of changing book numbers to get new readers in, why don’t the big boys just title/number their story arcs? (more…)

My apologizes fellow bastards. On occasion, I have to record/edit my own videos. I have upgraded my webcam and downloaded editing software so that the video quality is ALMOST decent. Hopefully the books will speak for themselves this week and you’ll grant me a pass. (more…)

Happy belated Valentine’s Day everyone! I can’t believe I’m going to say this but DC Comics won me over this week. Marvel NOW! just seems to be a gross re-numbering of their books to get people to pick up imaginary issue #1’s. DC really treated me like a lady this holiday and I plan on returning the favor… (more…)

Holy video fail, Batman! I want to apologize profusely for this week’s video quality. There was an audio error in our first draft and then my video editor boyfriend was pulled out to the Bahamas for a work trip. Despite my lame excuses, I want ya’ll to rest assured knowing I’ll be back in HD next week. Anyhoozle…

Marvel found a way to pull at my heartstrings by bringing Wolverine & Cyclops together over a beer while my mouth dropped at the idea of Rogue taking her mutant powers OVER 9000! DC Comics delves a bit more into Commissioner Gordon’s shady past and then pours us a hot cup of Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy pajama party. Alyssa Milano teams up with Boom Entertainment to bring us the intriguing Hacktivist. Image comics won my week with The Walking Dead finally giving me much bloodshed and death in this week’s All Out War. (more…)
