The Pacific Rim sequel, now called Pacific Rim: Uprising, is presently before the cameras in Australia. The cameras are being overseen by accomplished cinematographer Dan Mindel, whose talented eye has been used on Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so naturally he’s a man who’s proud of his work. Like many in the entertainment business, he shares that work with updates on social media, but a recent post on Instagram might have shared more than the impression that Mindel is having fun on the set of the giant robots versus giant aliens sequel. There’s a new trailer out for Carl Rinsch‘s 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves and I’ve got to be up front with you, I went into this trailer with every intention of mocking the hell out of this movie, Reeves, and anything else I could find. I was already merrily writing savagely witty banter in my head.
The first issue I was sure I was going to mock, about Keanu not being Asian got blown out of the water with the half-breed status of his character. Slowly, as the trailer progressed, everything I thought was going to be fertile ground for tom-foolery sprouted fantastic special effects and wonderful costuming.
I’m still concerned about Reeves patented stiff manner of delivering lines, but now I am willing to give this movie a chance. Even with all the reported delays and re-shoots. It looks like a lot of fun.
47 Ronin hits theater screens December 25th starring Keanu Reeves, Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Hiroyuki Sanada (Lost,The Wolverine), and Rick Genest known as “Zombie Boy.”
I’m one of those people who’s been convinced for about a year that Pacific Rim was always going to be the biggest dose of awesome we could possibly get at the movies this summer. How could it not be? It’s Guillermo del Toro’s dream movie, a giant monster epic that combines some of the best of Eastern and Western cinematic action sensibilities into one huge machine, with a compelling cast and trailers that just. would. not. quit. I had faith in Guillermo del Toro, I had faith in Idris Elba, I had faith in all those beautiful visuals leaked out to us over the last few months. I was convinced this movie was always going to be not just good, but positively brilliant action cinema.
There’s a new clip out for Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim which, thankfully, doesn’t have Idris Elba, as much as I love him, shouting about canceling the Apocalypse. This clip features Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Rinko Kikuchi (47 Ronin) in a sparring match with big sticks. It’s a nice little scene with both characters flexing their muscles and fighting egos at each other, a regular penis measuring spar session.
The movie also features Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff. Pacific Rim hits theater screens on July 12th.
Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim production team has released it’s first television spot for the epic bots battlin’ big monsters, unfortunately I can’t find a single frame of new footage.
Seriously Warner Brothers Marketing Department?
What the hell is wrong with you? I can’t believe that the first TV spot has Zero new footage, no teaser to get fans excited? Nothing to string us along and create MORE excitement? Annoying the Internet is not a smart marketing move, things start to happen.
Am I wrong about this, am I making any sense? Let me know in the comments section below if you think I am over-reacting.
PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS – When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Earlier today we talked about Guillermo del Toro opting out of any talks about directing Star Wars VII, and now we can see some of the reason why. This latest trailer for Pacific Rim is promising some fantastically monstrous scenes of mayhem. This trailer is so full of excitement and action, I can hardly sit still to write about it.
If the story and characterization is half as good as the special effects look we’re in for a hell of a ride, and del Toro is just the guy to have at the wheel. The movie stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Idris Elba (Thor), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). The cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, DiegoKlattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.
Pacific Rim crashes it’s way onto theater screens July 12th, 2013. I know where I’m going to be, my butt in that theater seat for some rock-um sock-um Robot action!
By now I’m guessing you’ve watched the Pacific Rimtrailer a couple of dozen times. What!? You haven’t!? Have you got some catching up to do. I’ve watched it so many times were you to string the viewings of the trailer end to end you’d have a movie as long as The Hobbit! Okay, I’m exaggerating, but I’ve watched the Pacific Rim trailer a lot is what I’m getting at.
But I haven’t yet watched it, with commentary. Sitting down with MTV director Guillermo del Toro adds a fun commentary to the amazing trailer chocked full of giant monsters, giant robots, and giant Idris Elba. I mean, he will be, once you see him kickin’ ass on the big screen.
Pacific Rim opens July 12th next year. Here’s a synopsis for ya,

There’s just over half a year to go until the premiere of Guillermo del Toro‘s giant robot/monster fight movie, Pacific Rim on July 12th, 2013. The marketing powers that be within the production have started their “viral” marketing campaign with a series of blue prints, shaky found footage videos, and leaked classified government documents.
First off is something many late night television viewers are familiar with, the “This is only a test” emergency alert system. In the world of Pacific Rim however, these alerts are about Kaiju, huge monsters that wreck destruction Godzilla style. If you see one of these warnings you don’t just mute the TV.
There is also some found footage of a Kaiju monster attack giving us the first small glimpse at one of the monstrous creatures threatening mankind.
How do you fight creatures that size? With giant, human controlled robots of course!
