There’s an old saying about the sometimes impossibly long development process in Hollywood, a movie isn’t really in production until it delivers its first piece of official marketing. Actually, I made that up. But it’s been almost 20 years since Independence Day first hit theaters, and after numerous fits and starts over the years, when it comes to expectations for a sequel, we have to see it to believe it. Well, now you can see it. Above and below. In a late night release, 20th Century Fox is dropping its first pieces of art work for Independence Day 2, or make that Independence Day Resurgence. With each new casting announcement, we must accept that after almost 20 years, we’re finally going to get that Independence Day sequel that’s been teased at since the original’s patriotically crowd-pleasing end. The year was 1996. America had won the Cold War and the only thing left to fear was death from above in 15-mile wide spaceships. Fortunately, these trying times produced a hero whose stirring rhetoric led a devastated country, and planet, to victory over invanding extra-terrestrials. Now the question is, can he do it again? In an official announcement today, ID4 director Roland Emmerich confirmed that Bill Pullman will be back as President Thomas Whitmore. More importantly though, Judd Hirsch will also return as Jeff Goldblum‘s stubbornly Jewish father Julius Levinson. (more…)

So much for that Ross Bagley comeback you were all counting on… Anyway, casting news! Everyday it seems that we’re actually going to be getting that long (and long and long) anticipated sequel to Independence Day, and nothing says “This is finally going to be a thing,” like casting news. It’s been a busy day for Independence Day 2 casting, which is strong sign because shooting will likely have to begin on the film before summer in order to meet its pre-determined Summer 2016 release date. Sadly, there’s no reason for Ross Bagely to get excited though, for his part, the pivotal role of Will Smith‘s character’s stepson from the first film, will now be played by an entirely new actor. Ever since the SyFy channel unceremoniously cancelled Stargate Universe a couple of years ago, fans have been clamoring for more trips through the ‘gate to brand new worlds and to seek out new human life living like cultures gone for thousands of years…. But I don’t think this is what they wanted. However, the slings and arrows of franchise management are outside the control of mom and pop sci-fi nerds, and because a brand name is a brand name is a brand name, Stargate will be rebooted. At least an attempt will be made anyway. The endeavor is one step closer now though as news has reached the interweb that a pair of screenwriters have been hired to pen the franchise reboot. (more…)

Godzilla’s Coming Back! We Mean to Toho!

Godzilla54

Godzilla may be a lusted after box office commodity in America, but in Japan he’s a cinematic legend on par with Humphrey Bogart or Charlie Chaplin. It was Japan’s Toho Studios that got the Godzilla ball rolling in 1954, turning what could have been a silly monster movie starring a guy in a suit trampling on cardboard buildings into a frightening parable for Japan’s suffering from nuclear warfare nearly a decade earlier. The metaphor wasn’t lost on anyone, and the Ishirō Honda creation developed a worldwide following that spawned dozens of sequels over the last six decades and at least two American remakes. But after a decade in retirement, the Japanese are looking to put their stamp on the legend once more. In other words, Toho’s back in the Godzilla business. (more…)

ID4_Jeff_Goldblum

Fresh off his award-eligible role in Law & Order: Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit,” Jeff Goldblum recently talked about the status of the Independence Day sequel and his part in it. It feels like it’s been a while since we heard anything about the follow-up to the nearly 20 year old alien invasion blockbuster, and maybe that’s a good thing. Still, there must be some kind of interest in seeing more ID4, and that’s why we keeping talking about it, and when you get a key player like Goldblum cornered, you’re obviously going to take the opportunity. So what of it, Goldblum? What’s the story with Independence Day Part 2: Independence Harder? (more…)

Sequels are a thing. They’re popular, earn studios a lot of money, and the notion isn’t going away any time soon. The sooner you come to accept that, the less angry you’ll feel when all your favorite films soon find themselves part of a series, a franchise, or worse, some “shared universe.” I’m not saying your rage isn’t warranted, but if you come to terms with the inevitability of shoddy sequels you’ll likely be less stressed out and maybe live longer. We here at Nerd Bastards are just looking out for you, man. (more…)

‘Independence Day’ Sequel Makes a Move on 2016

independence-day-movie-white-house

Twentieth Century Fox was so eager to get a new Independence Day in front of our eyes that they crammed it into an already busy summer schedule by wedging it in to open on July 3rd, 2015. But now, perhaps sensing that they were rushing things, or perhaps sensing that opening somewhere between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman Vs Superman was a miscalculation, Fox is pushing back the long-in-the-works alien invasion sequel to 2016.
