Sailor Moon

Despite early complaints about She-Ra’s design not being sexy enough, Netflix’s She-Ra and The Princesses of Power series has made a huge splash. Fans have fallen in love with the inclusive, diverse, and beautiful show. With the strong and powerful Adora, bold but insecure Glimmer, and the overexcited, intelligent Bow, the main cast drives each episode with gusto. Even if the intro theme song sometimes gives a harsh reminder that the show’s made for kids, people of all ages can enjoy and appreciate it.

However, what’s gotten the biggest buzz about She-Ra is its open and casual acceptance of LGBTQ+ people and relationships. Bow has two fathers. Two different allies are in a serious relationship (Netossa and Spinerella). Adora and Catra have romantic undertones so heavy that they could drown an entire city.

“You’ve probably had questions you’ve wanted to ask for 20 years,” Linda Ballantyne said to a room full of Sailor Moon fans last weekend at Toronto ComiCon. Yes, it has been that long since the Japanese manga turned anime series about a group of female warriors, their talking cats and their friend in the penguin suit came to North American shores, and from the look of the crowd, most of the room remembered watching it first run at lunch hour on YTV. So when Ballantyne said that many in the room had questions brewing for over two decades, they did. (more…)

Fans of the 90s’ smash hit anime, Sailor Moon, have been waiting with bated breath for any information about the new series. Over a year ago, for Sailor Moon‘s 20th anniversary, the new series was announced with the intention this new anime would premiere in 2013. Obviously, 2013 has come and gone and still no new Sailor Moon. Then the story became the new Sailor Moon could begin airing as early as January 2014, but I suspect someone mistranslated. I mean, January, July–we got too many “J” months! (more…)

While the flux-capacitor hasn’t been perfected, and we can’t help you fix any past holiday humbuggery, maybe we can help you get this holiday season off to a good start.

For the next 12 days (Dec 1st-12th), the staff of Nerd Bastards will be listing a few of their favorite nerdy things. Gadgets, doohickeys, thingamabobs and more – all sorts of  items that have been Nerd tested and Bastard approved.  Basically,  stuff you want, things you need, and everything you can’t have.

We hope you’ll  find some unique and nerdtastic gifts among our selections, and that they make their way under your tree, Menorah or Kwanzaa bush.

Hit the jump for Sarah Moran’s list of Nerdful things. Check back tomorrow for Regina Lizik’s list. To see archive of this feature, click HERE.

As nerds, we like to put a twist on almost everything. Which is why, sure, a frying pan is something every kitchen shouldn’t be without, but frying pans are boring. You need a set of pots and pans with sword hilts! Combat Kitchenware is a Kickstarter campaign and they’re goal has already been surpassed. You can still get a variety of pan sizes through donating either $27 for a handle kit to craft your own up to a $275 donation which would get you a customized handle on your pan.

House Lannister of Casterly Rock might be one of the Great Houses of Westeros, but they don’t hold a candle to Mario and the House of Nintendo’s throne of game consoles. Aaron Jasinski made this beautiful parody piece of the original Game of Thrones promotional pic, we can’t wait to see him do a painting of Kirby in full Tyrion armor slapping Joffrey like a bitch. You might have to excuse some excessive fangirling here because the little middle schooler within me is freakin’ the fuck out right now. Next summer there will be a new, official – like straight outta creator Naoko Takeushi‘s mouth – Sailor Moon anime series.

AHHH!! BEST. NEWS. EVER!!!

…oh god…gotta breath…gotta breath…

Anyway, this stellar news was announced at a recent event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the manga where Takeushi and the original voice actors for Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino and Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba, Kotono Mitsuishi and Tohru Furuya were present. Some are reporting Mitsuishi and Furuya will be reprising their roles, but I’m unable to confirm this since I can’t read Japanese. We can confirm the idol group, Momoiro Clover Z, who sang the show’s original theme song “Moonlight Densetsu,” will be recording the new series’ theme song.

This new series releasing in 2013 will be a retelling of the original manga so consider this a Sailor Moon reboot. The series is also getting a worldwide release and I’m hoping this means us here in the States will be able to see it just as quickly. Though, it would be kind of fun relying on bootleg fan subs, just like the good ‘ole days.

Let’s all be thankful this reboot is coming from Japan and is not a craptacular, American, re-imagining. In fact, they already tried and it was so awful it never saw the light of day.

Until now…

Honestly, it’s so terrible I wouldn’t mind seeing them produce at least one episode. Just so we can laugh at it.

Am I the only losing their mind over the news or are any of you bastards out there closet Sailor Moon fans? There are a milliong questions zooming through my brain right now. What will the designs look like? How updated will it appear? When released in U.S. will it be dubbed by the same people? What channel will air it? Will she be called Usagi or Serena? AHH! How can I wait a whole year!?!?!?
