We know that Marvel Comics has been trying to diversify its stable of heroes for the last couple of years with the creation of Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Jane Foster Thor, and, of course, Sam Wilson as Captain America. Given that Captain America’s shield is now being carried by an African-American character, it would be surprising if he didn’t decide to do things and carry himself differently than the original Cap, after all, America can be a very different country if your black instead of white. The new Captain America comic looks to be thinking along the same lines, but according to the greatest minds of Fox News, it just means that Captain America is now being anti-American. (more…)
You may or may not have heard about this thing called Secret Wars. It’s the latest Marvel Comics event miniseries that kicks off in the next couple of months, and promises – You guess it! – to change things in the Marvel Universe forever. Not content to promote the heck out of Secret Wars and all its ancillary tie-ins, spin-offs and one-shots, Marvel Comics now wants to tease us with the aftermath, and it begins with another thrilling game of guessing who’s now an Avenger. Marvel passed around the below graphic this morning featuring the mostly silhouetted team, with two new team members already confirmed. So who will now stand with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? (more…)
Captain America with wings?! Now I’ve seen everything. Of course, we haven’t seen too much yet of the new Captain America, AKA: Sam Wilson, the artist soon to be formally known as The Falcon. Marvel Comics today released the first new images from the All-New Captain America #1, featuring several variant covers and about three pages of interior art. As you may or may not remember, it was announced earlier this year with a lot of hype and fanfare that Steve Rogers would soon be stepping away from the mantle of the Star-Spangled Avengers as he ran out of super soldier serum steam, leaving a vacuum in the Marvel Universe. But Cap’s good friend and partner Sam Wilson will step in for all new All-New adventures as the winged Captain America who is off to battle HYDRA and other threats to the land of the free and the home of the brave. Rick Remender is writing the new series with art by Stuart Immonen. Marvel’s press release is below along with several preview images. (more…)
Jeez Marvel, same some stuff for Comic Con… Seriously, it’s been a jam-packed week for Marvel news, and not just of the big screen variety. After revealing the new, female version of Thor on The View, and new Captain America Sam Wilson on The Colbert Report, Marvel is now revealing the new Avengers line-up that will be coming to a comic book show near you this fall. The watch word for this new line-up: diversity. (more…)
While the recent news of Thor being replaced by a female Thor caused quite a stir in the comic community, the way it was announced was definitely more odd, as it was Whoopi Goldberg breaking the story on The View rather than any major comic news site. Now, Marvel has set up another seemingly big announcement, but this time on The Colbert Report, which has a bit better link to the comic community. Colbert himself has appeared in a comic, has a replica of Captain America’s shield as set dressing, and has even chatted with Joe Quesada a few times, so the show is a decent pick for an announcement of this kind. Well that didn’t take long. It seems that Robert Redford may have let slip a bit of serious spoilage in regards to his role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Poor guy. It’s worth noting that Redford doesn’t have a lot of experience on these big studio tentpoles in the age of internet journalism, so he didn’t know what he was in for. I mean, everyone knows that Butch and Sundance died in a shootout with the Bolivian military, right? RIGHT?!
We’ll get to Redford in a minute. In other Winter Soldier news, new cast member Anthony Mackie, AKA: Sam Wilson, AKA: The Falcon, talked about the size of role his character will play in the sequel. While talking to The Times-Picayune, Mackie said that he’s in about 60 per cent of the movie by his reckoning, but more than that, this thing is going to be so loaded with so many superheroes and super-stars, it’s going to feel like a sequel to another Marvel movie.
“Sam’s very involved. I’m in about 60 percent of the movie,” Mackie said. “Captain America, the Black Widow and The Falcon take down the Winter Solider together, and they solve the crime at hand and take down the Winter Soldier. So this movie, if you look at the cast, with everybody in (the fictional crime-fighting group) S.H.I.E.L.D. and (co-stars Robert) Redford and Sam Jackson and everybody who’s in the movie, it’s kind of turning into ‘The Avengers Part 2‘ because the cast is so big.”
Well, he just set the bar sky high.
As for Redford, he got caught spoiling by The Straits Time (then repeated by Here Be Geeks) with a potentially major reveal regarding his character Alexander Pierce, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. “I like the idea of playing a villain,” he said. “I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.”
Fair enough, but was Redford speaking generally, or will Pierce turn out to be a double agent, perhaps even playing key Winter Soldier antagonist Soviet General Aleksander Lukin, who, unless I’m mistaken, hasn’t been cast (or had his casting announced) yet.
More news as it develops.
