Djimon Hounsou is no stranger to the nerdy genres. He’s acted and voiced in TV, cartoons, and movies. Titles like The Wild Thornberrys, voiced Black Panther in the 2010 Marvel Knights mini-series, Drago in How To Train Your Dragon 2, playing Papa Midnite in the Constantine movie, starred in Seventh Son, The Legend of Tarzan, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He played Korath in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie that had everyone tilting their head and asking “Who?” for weeks after the first trailer dropped. But what’s next on his plate? Three incredible roles in three big movies.
DC’s Captain Marvel, alter ego of teenager Billy Batson, is the star of the Shazam comics and one of the original BIG superheroes. With that in mind, it’s fair to say, the comic’s fans are eagerly awaiting any information they can get about the forthcoming movie – which will be another in DC’s expanded cinematic universe. So far, the studio and actors have been pretty tight-lipped about it, but thanks to Zachary Levi, fans now have their first official look at the costume he will don when he becomes Captain Marvel. One of the most repeated criticisms of the DC Extended Universe series of movies so far has been their bleakness, their negativity, and their general sense of nihilism. There’s literally a line in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice where Superman says, “No one stays good in this world.” Great message from the man who stands for truth, justice and the American way, right? Well, an antidote may be coming in the form of a man who’s very much like Superman in terms of super-powers, but now Shazam! will have to find the fun and light-heartedness of the being a superhero in the DCEU. Warner Bros. has confirmed today that their next film to be shot for the DC Extended Universe will be none other than Shazam! Let’s not forget that Justice League is currently wrapping up its post-production while Aquaman is still filming so we won’t be seeing an adaptation of Shazam! on the screen just yet. The film is currently scheduled for a release in 2019.
We’ve known for a very very (very) long time that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (famously from Fast and Furious and infamous for The Tooth Fairy,) will star as the immortal Egyptian anti-hero in the someday coming
Captain Marvel Shazam/Black Adam movie that is apparently still someday coming, but who’d be playing the good guy that the former wrestler turned actor’s bad guy? Well Mr. The Rock Johnson, who is also reportedly producing the film, did give a not so subtle hint to We Got This Covered on who he’d want to see suited up as the scarlet draped acronym powered hero. Since 2014, Dwayne Johnson has been heavily involved in bringing a Shazam! movie to the big screen. The former professional wrestler, who at this point is “box office steroids” and has was 2016’s richest actor having made more than $64 million last year alone for such films as Central Intelligence, Moana and the TV show Ballers. Johnson has been working with his production team in concert with DC on bringing a Shazam! movie to the big screen and within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The Rock will play Shazam’s rogue Black Adam in the upcoming film which is expected to be released in 2019. However, there is more good news related to Shazam!
We have to deal with two things when we talk about Shazam!, and the first is how the genuine tale of a well-meaning teenage boy with the ability to become a hulking adult body-builder that can fly by saying a magic word will fit into the dark as sin DC Extended Universe? The other question is how Dwayne Johnson can possibly fit another big budget franchise movie into his schedule so long as he has Jumanji, Rampage, a San Andreas sequel, and The Fast and the Furious and proposed spin-offs to fit in? Well don’t count Johnson, or his ability to multitask, out yet when it comes to the DCEU. (more…)
Last summer it was unofficially announced that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was locked into play super villain Black Adam in an adaptation of Shazam! based on the classic DC superhero. Unofficially, meaning Shazam! was not, at the time, listed as part of DC/Warner Bros. slated of upcoming movies. Everything regarding a Shazam! movie was coming straight outta The Rocks mouth, with the larger than life action star voicing his excitement for the role, that he’s had multiple talks with the studio, and that they almost rolled him out to announce a Shazam! movie at San Diego Comic Con 2015 but backed out last minute. It’s been discussed that Shazam! and other DC superheroes that have been sitting in the Warner Bros. bullpen had been waiting on reception/performance of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad. With the success, or, not so successful (according to critics) recent DC films, people are unsure of where to stand in their views of the DCEU future. It has been confirmed, however, that a Shazam! movie is moving forward and will, in fact, take continuity within the other DCEU films! (more…)
With production and distribution rights belonging to New Line Cinema and not Warner Bros, the question remains… Is Shazam part of the DC Movie Universe, or not? New Line’s Toby Emmerich made some comments a while back indicating that the character may become a standalone franchise that sits apart from any other built up Universe. But, alas, a new post from DC has now upset the applecart, suggesting that Shazam might actually be part of the DC Universe, alongside Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. So, the ultimate question on our minds now – is if the character going to be an active group participant in The Justice League? (more…)
Now that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is officially locked in as Black Adam for the upcoming Shazam movie, even more details are starting to come out. While it’s interesting that we’re finding out who will be playing the villain in a movie before we even find out who the hero will be and that this will be the first DC/Warner Bros. movie that doesn’t center on one of the main Justice Leaguers, like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, that’s not all that is unique about this movie, as New Line president Toby Emmerich revealed today.
