Contemporary Hollywood is indulging its fetish for remakes a lot right now. Disney has already begun its extensive series of live action remakes of classic movies. And it’s not just remakes toying with the stories we love – sequels, prequels and extended universe movies are constantly adding to the lore and histories of contemporary culture’s most popular cinematic worlds. Instagram. In the mix of food porn and other things people like to document that don’t matter, there was/is Neil Blomkamp‘s Instagram Account. The District 9 director has famously used it as a dumping ground for his concept art for a proposed Alien sequel. His designs depicted his vision for the happenings to Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley and Michael Biehn‘s Hicks post the events in Aliens – one piece of art even featured Riply wearing some sort of Xenomorph suit (pictured above). Supposedly, FOX has was very keen on bringing Blomkamp’s newly proposed Alien sequel to celluloid.
So what’s the status? Is Sigourney Weaver ‘s Ripley going to get a proper ending? Well, it’s not looking good. (more…)
For a project that has been floating in the social consciousness for almost fifteen years now, Alien 5 still remains something of a mystery. It has had a number of different names attached to and dropped off it over the years, with everything from plot to characters to art released and then either retracted or put on hold as time went on and nothing came of it. Now that 2017 is just around corner, we’re finally getting close to seeing an actual product, as it has been said that work will really get underway after the Prometheus prequel Alien: Covenent, due for release in May of next year. The first of several proposed sequels to James Cameron’s Avatar will finally come to theaters at some point in 2018. By the time Avatar 2 comes out it will have been 10 years since the release of the first film from 2008. Do audiences still give a sh*t? Time certainly has not been on the franchise side. Avatar is remembered as a ground breaking 3D movie (arguably starting the 3D trend that most everyone now hates) just as much as it recalled for a having an uninspired story. Like Fern Gully, Pocahontas, and Dances With Wolves before it, Avatar is just another salty reminder that where there are indigenous people, there are greedy white men to ruin their day and their lives… along with at least one white guy that feels really bad about it.
Avatar is, at the end of the day, the highest grossing movie of all time. Swinging people back to it, yeah, James Cameron isn’t too worried about it. Still, there are many defectors that will need strong convincing to be invested again. Maybe a word from Sigourney Weaver, talking about how great the new scripts are, will spark some interest, eh? From the time before even Alien Versus Predator was given the green light, people have been talking about making Alien 5. In fact, big names have been buzzing around the project since as early as 2002. Sigourney Weaver has been open about her interest and quite adamant that a new film would definitely be the right way to go with the franchise. Ideas, concepts and even scripts have been pitched, over the years, from Joss Whedon, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. (more…)
For fans excited for the release of three (yes, three!) Avatar sequels in the coming years, writer/director/producer James Cameron has opened up about a few details of the upcoming films. He gave an interview with Entertainment Weekly announcing that he wants to prove the first film, which is still the highest grossing film of all time, wasn’t a fluke. That’s not a small order to fill, and the creator of Pandora obviously has reason to be nervous. But where does the process currently stand? And how soon can we expect to be immersed in that gorgeous alien world that stole our hearts almost exactly six years ago? (more…)
It’s been quite a year for Alien developments. Way back in February, we started seeing hints that a new Alien sequel was in development under the supervision of District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, and then production began ramping up on Ridley Scott‘s sequel to Prometheus. In the last couple of months though it’s Scott’s movie
Prometheus 2 Alien: Paradise Lost Alien: Covenant that has taken prescience, while Alien 5 was put on “indefinite hold,” but now “indefinite” seems not so definite. One of the stars of the Alien franchise, Michael Biehn, is saying that his next adventure in the Alien universe merely awaits the release of Scott’s. (more…)
