People fear losing independence. They fear losing their bodies, their minds. While they fear dangerous entities or secret governments or oppressive systems, more than anything they fear losing power over themselves. Those organizations just tend to lie adjunct to those fears.

This is the root of all dystopian novels. The system may have shifted into something horrible, but the true horror is becoming something you’re not. And people will go to terrible lengths to preserve their souls.

In Fahrenheit 451, this meant hiding the bible under your bed and reading stories you don’t quite understand just to learn something different and purposeful about the world.

In Lathe of Heaven, this meant drugging yourself until your uncontrollable mind stopped ripping the world, your world, to shreds.

In Skyrim, this meant building secret shrines of Talos and being willing to die by Thalmor hands while praying at the altar.

Wednesday May 15th, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed an anti-abortion law that would ban abortion in almost all cases, save when a mother’s life was in jeopardy. While Roe v. Wade has been in effect around the nation since 1973, allowing first-trimester abortions for any woman, this law changes that for Alabama women. Now they or even the doctors performing the procedure could go to jail.

The Elder Scrolls fan Ben Toth takes us on a look back at the world of Tamriel as The Elder Scrolls world reaches it’s 25th anniversary.

“Wake up, We’re here. Why are you shaking?”, these words were my introduction to the world of Tamriel and The Elder Scrolls. It was 25 years ago that the first game, Arena, was released by Bethesda, but I didn’t play until the third game in the series, 2002’s Morrowind.
Morrowind was, for me, a formative game. Along with Ultima it set my taste in games, gave me my love of RPGs. Its deep world, expansive lore, and, frankly, a convoluted storyline with no clear sense of who’s telling the truth was, and is, deeply compelling. The game drops you into it right from the start and lets you be the fish out of water your character is, and it works wonders.

Skyrim-Special-Edition-2

Ever since the release of the PS4 and Xbox One, Skyrim fans have been longing for a re-release. Already known for its impressive graphics, the idea of seeing Skyrim on the improved graphics of a PS4 or Xbox One was a hope many fans had given up on. All hope was not lost though when last week at the 2016 E3 in Los Angeles, Bethesda made this announcement. Later this October, Skyrim will be re-released with all the bells and whistles that only a next Gen console can provide. Remastering of popular games has become fairly common practice in the game industry. Games such as Final Fantasy X, God of War III, Dark Souls II, The Last of Us and many others have recently released HD versions. Some of these offered little to no extra game material, they were merely made to look better. And gamers were excited. They bought them. They played them. They asked for more, but many others asked what seemed like an obvious question. Why? Why are game studios just gussying up old games instead of making new ones? Have they run out of ideas? Is it just laziness? These are fair questions and ones that deserve exploration. (more…)

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. ABOVE: I, for one, always thought E.T. was insanely creepy looking. That little, long necked, alien bastard haunted many of my dreams. Painting him on a child’s face doesn’t make him any less horrifying, either. It makes him worse! Fears aside, I have to commend the artistry fro Christy Lewis of Daizy Design Face Painting. Truly, she makes the most astonishing face paints. You see the character and forget there’s a human face behind it. Wow! [FashionablyGeek]

We often find solace in our hobbies, a way to escape the troubles of our individual worlds. When Redditor Ib-Cyber lost his sister to cancer after nine long years of struggle, he turned to his favorite game to help ease his pain of loss. He chronicled how playing Skyrim helped him in his time of grief and posted it on Reddit.

Someone on the staff of Bethesda saw the post and contacted Ib-Cyber, asking for his mailing address. On the one year anniversary of his sister’s death a package was delivered to his door. Opening the package he discovered a Skyrim art book signed by the Bethesda Skyrim team. Ib-Cyber later posted:

“I absolutely was floored, and a day I thought would be absolutely agonizing ended with an incredibly heart-warming and unexpected moment of absolute kindness.”

Ib-Cyber’s post must have touched the Bethesda team’s heart strings. For the Bethesda team it must have felt very rewarding to have their hard work not only be appreciated, but help a fellow gamer through hard times.

What games or nerdy hobbies of yours have helped you through some hard times?
