Last year, a legend among the acting world and nerd community, Leonard Nimoy, passed on. He was known to most as the actor of near-mythic Star Trek character, Spock. It was a shock to many of his fans, even though he had lived to be a ripe age of 83, and had been quietly suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). As the world grieved, tributes were made, virtual memorials were erected, and many spoke out about what Nimoy, and his most favorite character, meant to them. Most touchingly, his son Adam Nimoy, began work on a film (or rather, shifted the focus of his film a bit, as production had begun before the tragic loss). Now, at SDCC 2016,we get our first real trailer of For The Love Of Spock(more…)

Adam and Leonard Nimoy

In late 2014, Adam Nimoy and his father made the first plans to create a documentary about Spock, exploring behind-the-scenes Star Trek footage in more detail than any book or film had done before. When Leonard Nimoy tragically passed away following complications with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in February of 2015, the project quite aptly became both a celebration of and a tribute to the man who portrayed him for so long. Unless you’ve got access to Mr. Peabody’s Way Back Machine, it’s only videos like this one from 1976 that can shed light on the early days of Star Trek fandom. You’d expect that there would be a lot of changes since then and you’d be right, conventions have gotten much bigger, there are a lot more fans, a lot more merchandise, and Cosplayers continue to roam the convention halls, but some things never change, including those awkward convention interviewers. After a slew of production delays, Star Trek 3 (tentatively titled Star Trek Beyond) has officially started filming, but Paramount Pictures is looking even farther ahead than that. They’ve reportedly signed Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to reprise their leading roles as Kirk and Spock, respectively, for the 4th installment of the sci-fi franchise. These deals aren’t a guarantee for a fourth movie, though; Paramount will see how Star Trek 3 fares in theaters first before any concrete plans come into play. (more…)

We all kinda scratched our heads when Paramount suddenly changed gears and announced that Roberto Orci was out as director, while still hanging around as a producer for Star Trek 3. The Internet blinked, and then we’re off and running with short lists of possible replacement directors. What wasn’t really revealed was why Paramount and Orci decided to go separate ways in regards to his directing career. While Tim Kring’s 2006 television series Heroes may have left a bad taste in some mouths, one thing that most fans had in common was the love of the characters.  Viewers were genuinely interested in what would happen to Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia); audiences cheered anytime the series focused on Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka); fans truly believed that if Peter saved the cheerleader, Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere), he could save the world.  While the good guys were fun to rally behind, there is no doubt that audiences absolutely adored big baddie, Sylar (Zachary Quinto).  The moment a reboot of the series was announced, titled Heroes Reborn, fans wanted to know who would be returning and started crossing their fingers in the hope that their favorite characters would reappear.  Unfortunately, while he played what was undoubtedly one of the most popular roles on the series, Quinto has squashed any hope fans had for the return of the super cool villain.
