ABOVE: I’m not one for Blu-ray/DVD collectibles, but I must own this limited edition Walking Dead season 3 case. The Blu-ray case from McFarlane Toys comes with five plastic decapitated heads. All you have to do to uh, enjoy the view, is add water. [MTV Geek]
The ink has yet to dry on the contracts, but The Hollywood Reporterhas confirmed that Jena Malone has been cast as tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Johanna Mason represents District 7, the lumber district and uses an axe during the 75th Annual Hunger Games. She won her first Hunger Games by pretending to be weak as a means of tricking the other tributes into underestimating her. The character is brash and snarky, with some of the best one liners in the Hunger Games series.
Most likely you’ve seen Jena Malone recently in the miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys”or in Zack Snyder’sSucker Punch.
Zack Snyder‘s Sucker Punch has been talked about quite a bit since its opening last weekend, and unfortunately not for great reasons. (read NB’s Editor-in-chief, Luke Gallagher’s review here) I haven’t had the chance to take in the sexy girl, samurai and dragon fightin’, nerdgasm fantasy epic yet so I in no way have much of an opinion. I do plan on seeing it, but you can understand how my enthusiasm waned when everyone was telling me it was utter crap. Currently Sucker Punch is holding a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes and it only made $19 million its opening weekend. Yikes! You never know, years from now Sucker Punch might climb to cult status and people will be swapping stories of how they loved it from the get go (which is all lies, because if that was the case all cult classics would be box office sensations).
Maybe you’re still on the fence about whether or not you want to cough up the 10 bucks (or $12 or $15 depending where you live and if you want 3D & Imax) to see Sucker Punch. Well Warner Bros. really wants you to see Sucker Punch, so much so they’ve released the first six minutes of the film online. They want you to share in Snyder’s fantasy, and they would like to make a little of that $82 million budget back. Double yikes!
Watch below and let us know if you’ve changed your mind about seeing Sucker Punch. Has this little appetizer piqued your interest?
While everyone only seems to be interested in what Zack Snyder is doing with the upcoming Superman reboot, the dude had a little movie come out this weekend that is being given a collective “Pfft!”. The flick is ‘Sucker Punch‘ and it’s a real shame it’s being over looked. It’s a fan-boy, girl-power, fantastical. Sexy girls fighting dragons, robots, steampunk zombie Nazi’s and giant, gun-toting samurai. Excuse me while I mop my nerd juice off the floor.
OK, I will admit the story is ridiculous. Horrid even. Or, at least it plays out horribly. It goes goes a little something like this. A young girl named Baby Doll seeks to escape the insane asylum that she’s been thrown into where she will receive a lobotomy. She plans her escape with four other girls, where they have to collect five items to help them break out of the asylum. Fair enough, right? Well, this is where it gets bizarre. To execute the plan, Baby Doll must use her dance skills and jazz hands to hypnotize/seduce the guards and other asylum/club (oh ya, the Asylum is a front for a sex/dance club. Don’t ask.) employees. Of course, we never actually see here dance. When she begins to dance she closes her eyes and suddenly the world around her disappears. In her minds eye, we see a crazy imaginary world in which Baby Doll and the other girls set out to accomplish their missions. Enter the dragons, robots, steampunk zombie Nazi’s..etc. It’s a bit jarring. You’re vested in whats happening in the real world and then you’re interrupted by these 15 minute video-game type sequences of pulse pounding, OMGWTFBBQ, bat-shit crazy action. The latter serving no purpose other than to be awesome.
So the the story is not solid by any means. Same goes for the dialogue and acting. If you take any of it seriously you’re gonna feel like you were sucker punched. Just sit back and watch it for the visual experience it is. Besides Snyder’s not known for his talent in writing, but for his vivid imagination. It’s style vs. substance and in ‘Sucker Punch’ Snyder flexes every sci-fi art muscle he has. If you “let yourself go” (common theme in the flick) you will be astounded at the collection of incredibly awesome, visually stunning action sequences brought before you. It’s nerd wish fulfillment at its finest. And, has enough “Yes We Can” girl-power attitude to keep Hot Topic in business.
I certainly enjoyed it. Of course, simple things like gothed up girls being complete badasss amuse me. Should I be more mature? More critical? Probably, but throw enough eye candy my way and I’ll be too entranced to care.
YouTube user forensicator8 created an amazing mash-up of the new trailer for Zack Snyder upcoming film Sucker Punch with clips for various Disney films.
Sucker Punch is about a bunch of girls who, in order to escape an insane asylum, flock to a fantasy world that they control. It looks like a great film, as I have immensely enjoyed both 300 and Watchmen.
Surprisingly, this works incredibly well with clips from Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and more!
I’m starting to get the inclination that the trailers for Zach Snyder’s Sucker Punch are far better than the movie itself. Honestly, what kind of character depth and good story can you make about sexy girls fighting dragons, robots, and giant, gun-toting samurai? The flick will be nothing but two hours of stunning action and sexy eye candy. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. I’d gladly pay $10 bucks to watch sexy girls fight dragons, robots, and giant, gun-toting samurai. I’d also gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today (what?).
To prove my point of all action and no substance check out the newest trailer. It’s essentially a music video compilation of a bunch of kick-ass special effects-enhanced action sequences. Regardless, it will make your genitals happy.
Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new banner for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. opening in theaters and IMAX on March 25th. This movie just keeps looking better and better. I think this banner and the character portraits after the jump would look great in a smaller format framed together. The retro future look that this film has shown us so far is fantastic. I just hope the finished piece is greater than the fragmented parts we have seen so far.
I am hoping the fight scenes of Sucker Punch continue in Snyder’s style used in 300 and Watchmen. That slowed motion minute long shot from 300 of King Leonidas walking through his enemies, taking one out after the other. That scene sang to my nerdbastard heart. The film stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Oscar Isaac and Scott Glenn. Quite the lineup, eye candy all around.
Which of these ladies do you think will steal this movie? Which will stand out?

Zack Snyder, the man who brought the worlds of 300 and The Watchmen to life is bring us another world of fantastic imagery and wonder with Sucker Punch. Starring Emily Browning as Baby Doll, a young girl forced into a mental institution by her wicked stepfather. She begins to retreat into an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility. Assisted thanks to the help of her friends, played by Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung and Jena Malone, they navigate incredible dreamscapes collecting items needed for their freedom.
Sure, the movie doesn’t come out till March of 2011 but Warner Brothers has just released a full trailer for the film, presumably attached to this weekends Due Date, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galifianakis. Check out the visual worlds of Sucker Punch for yourself:
What may become one of Snyder’s most jaw-dropping film to date everyone will have to be satisfied with watching this over and over till more scenes get released.
