‘Man of Steel’ Update: PG-13 Rating And Possible Sub-Villains

The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has just released the latest batch of movie ratings and Zach Snyder‘s Man Of Steel is getting a PG-13 rating. It’s not much of a surprise really, most mainstream superhero movies get the PG-13 rating, each of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman movies, The Avengers, all got a PG-13 for mild violence and adult content.

The MPAA posted their reasoning for the rating:

There had better be some INTENSE sci-fi violence in this movie. Superman needs to hit something, he needs to hit it hard, and I’m not talking about Lois Lane. (Rim shot!) Superman Returns suffered because there wasn’t enough fighting, there was action, but without some actual fighting Superman is boring.

The next Man of Steel news update tidbit is another one of those LEGO Set Spoilers. Toy sets often spoil some details of their movie counterpart through packaging or pre-order forms and Man of Steel is no exception. The title of the box set gives us a peek at some of the characters involved in the movie. In this case a couple new villain names.

76003 Superman – Battle of Smallville : Général Zod, Colonel Hardy, Tor-An, Superman et Faora

We knew about Zod, but now the cats out of the bag about Tor-An and Faora, two additional Kryptonians. Many are speculating about what kind of role each will play in the story, most figure them to be smaller, secondary villains to General Zod, it’s a good bet that their going to be minions.

ComicBook.com is reporting an anonymous source that claims Tor-An will be played by actor and stuntman Richard Cetrone (Sucker Punch), along with another Kryptonian – Dev-Em, an escaped criminal played by Revard Dufresne (Sucker Punch).

The title of the set is what really intrigues me. Battle of Smallville leads me to believe that there will be a big fight in Superman’s home town during the movie. Remember that scene in the trailer where a space craft is hovering outside the Kent house? Could that be Zod and his minions come to play?

Zod: “Can Clark come out to play Mrs Kent?” Maybe Tor-An can do a Warriors style clinking bottles on his fingers . . . “Superman, come out and plaaaaayyyyy!”

Henry Cavill Talks ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’

We have a bit under a year until Zack Snyder‘s Superman: Man of Steel hits theaters, and while that may seem like a long ways away, the buzz that was generated from the footage that was shown at the SDCC has definitely gotten people into anticipation-mode after having seen that it’s fairly different from the other Superman flicks we’ve seen.

Henry Cavill, the new Supes, spoke with Cineplex Magazine about the film and his take on the character:

What I can say is that it’s a modernization of the character and a very realistic view of one, obviously, very fantastic individual. It’s an unreal situation, but it’s approached from a very practical viewpoint. We wanted to make the character easier to identify with. [...] It’s important to do the role justice. There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it’s a great one to have because it’s a wonderful opportunity. I don’t let the pressures get to me because that’s going to hinder my performance and, therefore, let people down. So I choose to ignore the pressure side of it and focus on doing justice to Superman.

I think it’s fair to say that Cavill will do a decent job.  At the very least, he’ll be good for us to look at.  And knowing Snyder, there will be plenty of other eye candy (even if it’s just beautiful cinematography).

Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe will join Henry Cavill on the big screen in June 2013.

‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ May Have More Action – Possible Spoiler

Lots of interesting things happen during the San Diego Comic-Con. Lots of things.

One of them happens to be a juicy little bit of spoilery information about Superman: Man of Steel.  According to some dude at a party who heard things from another dude and so on and so forth, there will be some more action in this next flick than there was in Superman Returns.

From Bleeding Cool:

No one doubted that Zack Snyder would reverse that. But I have been told details of one specific scene in particular, in which Superman breaks apart a building and uses the building itself as a weapon in some kind of ‘super martial art’ fashion. “Girders as throwing stars” was the specific example I was given.

Apparently this is pretty credible information.  Regardless, I think it’s awesome that this opens up the possibility of getting film dudes or dudettes drunk as hell and getting valuable information from them.  Eh, eh?

Expect A ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ Teaser Trailer Soon, And Some Nuggets From Zack Snyder & Hans Zimmer

According to the Alberta Film Ratings, the teaser trailer for Superman: Man of Steel is rated G with a running time of 1 minute and 27 seconds. I suppose this means we should keep our eyes peeled for it very, very soon! Like, potentially within the next week because of a particular convention happening in a particular place right now.

During his presentation at the Art Center of College and Design, Zack Snyder talked about his career and discussed a few things about the casting and pre-production of Man of Steel:

We had about 500 guys initially. We did this massive auditioning madness. It got down to the usual suspects in a pretty quick order. Henry Cavill was actually the first one we physically tested on film. We actually tested him in the Christopher Reeve Superman suit. And that was a big deal. That’s a hard suit to pull off. Trust me. If you’re just standing there in that suit, it’s dodgy. It felt like we just bought it a costume shop. Plus, there’s no mask. I’ve been around a few superhero costumes, and it’s weird because when you’re in the Superman costume it’s just you from the neck up. And somebody just combed your hair. But Henry came out of the trailer when we were shooting a test and everybody thought Okay, that’s Superman. He was awesome and did a great job.

Hans Zimmer is a busy, busy man. He just finished up with The Dark Knight Rises, and Man of Steel is his next project. He spoke with Danny Graydon about taking on the Superman tunes:

I don’t feel confident at all. I never feel confident. But, a little bit of fear has gone a long way to being inspiring in the past. John Williams is the master and I am not even going to try and go in that direction. I’ll try my best not to embarrass myself and my colleagues on the film. I’m definitely going to have a go! In a funny way, it’s exactly because Superman is such an opposite character to Batman that I am welcoming the opportunity to do the music.

Isn’t it interesting to hear that one of the best film composers out there is never confident about his work? I think so, at least.

Anyway, more Superman goodness to come during the SDCC, I’m sure!

Official ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ Facebook Page Has Landed!

Is it a flying platypus?

Is it a clown car with wings?

Nope, it’s … Facebook.

Huh.

The official Facebook page for Superman: Man of Steel has landed!  At this point in time, the only thing it’s got is this nifty new banner.  We can only guess what’s to come, but it’ll definitely have to include the standard fare of some sort of teaser video thing.

Hopefully that’ll show up before June 13.

Hit the jump for the official synopsis if you haven’t seen that yet.

Superman takes to the skies once more as acclaimed actor Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Immortals) dons the suit, cape and S-shield of the MAN OF STEEL. With an all-star cast that includes Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as John and Martha Kent, Clark’s earthbound parents; Oscar® winner Russell Crowe as Superman’s Kryptonian father Jor-El; The Fighter’s Amy Adams as intrepid Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane; The Matrix’s Laurence Fishburne as editor Perry White; and Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon as Superman’s otherworldly archenemy General Zod, populations from Smallville to Metropolis are psyched for Superman. With the directorial stylings of 300’s Zack Snyder and the superheroic production team behind Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the sky’s the limit for the last son of Krypton!

Warners Now Accepting Applications for ‘Man of Steel 2′ Writers

The Warner Bros. money men must like what they see coming in on the dailies from the set of Superman: Man of Steel because they’re now shopping for writers to pen (so to speak) a potential sequel to the film.

So who’s on the short list? Not David S. Goyer, the man that developed the script for Man of Steel with Christopher Nolan, and developed the storylines for Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, including the upcoming Dark Knight Rises. Instead, the focus seems to be on Steve Kloves (the Harry Potter saga sans Order of the Phoenix), Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans, Pacific Rim), and the legendary Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark and Empire Strikes Back).

That’s a pretty hefty slate, especially considering that Man of Steel isn’t released until JUNE 14TH, 2013!!!! That’s over a year and a half away, in case you can’t do the math. I guess Henry Cavill isn’t going to get a chance to let himself go before having to hit the gym for part two. Sorry Harry, no Li’l Debbies for you.

Man of Steel Is Very New 52, Says Cavill

And it’s not just the lack of underwear on the outside.

The rumor mill about Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman reboot The Man of Steel churns. Star Henry Cavill sat down with the The Washington Examiner and leaked out a little info recently. So how similar is the movie reboot to the comic relaunch?

“When that came out, everyone went, ‘Arrhhh! Everything’s changed.’ It’s part of the evolution of the character. There is a modernization to it, and certainly our style is making him easier to associate with because it’s pretty tough to associate with an invulnerable alien.”

Well, we know that in both the red trunks are gone and the suit is ‘Kryptonian Armor’ and not something Ma Kent sewed together, however I am uncertain how similar the new movie and, say Grant Morrison‘s current run on Action Comics, can be beyond the lack of red manties on the man of steel. The movie has been in development for a couple of years so how much of the new comic continuity could be included? Granted, with the critical and sales success of the new comic version of the big blue boy scout, a little overlap might be a good idea.

Apparently, Man of Steel isn’t the first time Cavill has been up for the role either. He was short listed when McG was still in charge of Superman Returns, only to be ousted for Brandon Routh when Bryan Singer came onboard.

“It’s actually been proven that just because I didn’t get Superman then doesn’t mean that I can’t get Superman now. You can’t let [losing a part] get you down. You’ve got to look at the positives. I got to meet with Warner Bros. and everyone there. It’s beneficial, really.”

Lastly, and most importantly, how fan reaction matters to him personally on this version of the first real superhero.

“There are a lot of people who have dedicated their life to loving this character. … Their opinion does matter. I’ve done my research on the source material. I have my opinions on the various bits and bobs, but sometimes there will be a little gem out there about one of the books, and I’ll say to myself, ‘Yeah. That’s a good point.’”

Not to put a fine point on it, but that last little bit there sets my comic fan side at ease. Are we set up for something new with The Man of Steel? Defiantly, but as I was with the ‘New 52′ I am cautiously optimistic. Do I miss the red underpants? Yes, I think we all do.

Official Plot Synopsis For ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’

Open casting calls are being held in British Columbia for Man of Steel, and the notice included an official plot synopsis of Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman flick.

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.”

What this tells us is it’s exactly as we’ve been speculating: the film explores everything that led up to Clark Kent’s decision to become Superman. The villains, we hear, will be General Zod and other aliens from Krypton.

Super Hero Round Up: Green Lantern End Credits Scene Revealed, Cyclops Laser Blast is REAL, Man of Steel is Casting Extras, New Captain America Footage and Images

Super Hero Round Up? All the little Superhero movie and news bits that you should know about, but just don’t make a full post on their own. So tighten up your belt, rub some dirt on your hands, and get ready for some fast and furious Superhero news!

Mark Strong (Sinestro) Talks Green Lantern Easter Eggs and the after credits movie scenes:

That was shot speculatively, I think. There was an idea that there would be an introduction of the idea that the yellow ring corrupts him. Perhaps it was felt in the body of the film, it wasn’t the right time to introduce it. So actually the thing to do is introduce everybody to the mythology and the story, and then give them that little taste. Certainly the fanboys who know about it will be excited, and anybody else, at least they have an opportunity of understanding where it could go from here.
I couldn’t do any research on aliens. I don’t know any aliens, so I didn’t know what kind of a guy he was. All I could do was use human characteristics, and it was very obvious to me he’s a kind of military commander-type figure who is very wary of this new Lantern and feels like his priority is the Corps, and if this guy’s going to be the weak link in the Corps, then he’s going to have to do something about it. The way he’s drawn, it’s a muscular drawing, you have to try and bring an element of that to the way you play him. That’s what I tried to do.

What’s interesting about these statements is that they lead me to believe that a major part of the second film in the Green Lantern series will deal with Sinestro turning against the Green Lantern Corps he once loved so much. I would love to see that story unfold. Now on to the probability that there will even be a second Green Lantern film.

Source: Crave Online

According to The New York Times, Green Lantern– after marketing – ended up costing Warner Bros. $300 million and is tracking for about a $60 million opening. Which wouldn’t be particularly good for a film costing that much. The slow economy explains a lot of that number. People just are not spending much money. So could this kill any future Green Lantern movies? No matter how good the film, if it doesn’t make money there is no chance of a second.

UPDATED! Antje Traue May Join ‘Superman: Man of Steel’ as the Brawling, Badass Kryptonian, Faora

[Variety is confirming Antje Traue has been cast as Faora in Superman: Man of Steel]

We already know Faora will supposedly appear at the right hand of General Zod (Michael Shannon) in Zack Snyder‘s Superman: Man of Steel, now we might know whose playing the kick-ass Kryptonian. Variety is reporting, via Superhero Hype, they’ve tapped German actress, Antje Traue for the role. A relative unknown, at least for big budget, super hero movies, Traue co-starred in the sci-fi move, Pandorum and will be in the upcoming, 5 Days of August. We’re still waiting on official confirmation but until then Traue seems like a fantastic choice for Zod’s right hand lady.

If you’d like a refresher on what a crazy bitch Faora is, here ya go. I think she’ll be a welcomed addition to Snyder’s Superman. We’ve already seen her on the big screen, sorta, as she was the inspiration for Ursa in Superman and Superman II. Of course, I think they neglected to include her killer hand-to-hand combat skills in those films so here’s hoping this Faora is a truer incarnation of the character.

We all want to see Superman flattened by a woman, we just need the right woman to do it. Is that Antje Traue? I don’t know, but I’d love to see her try.
