Appearing on Tavis Smiley‘s PBS talk show last night was one Joss Whedon. The man’s had a lot to talk about lately, like promoting his recent Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing, fielding questions about his upcoming ABC series Agents of SHIELD, and discussing his progress on scripting Avengers 2. It’s that last gig, writing the sequel to the billion dollar earning The Avengers, that I find most interesting. Partly because we all want to see how Whedon will follow up the superhero smash hit, and, we want to know how he’s incorporating new characters Scarlet Witch and her brother, Quicksilver.
He talks Marvel from around the 10:00 minute to the 19:30 mark,
His specific comments on Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are as follows,
We are introducing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch who are mainstays of The Avengers universe, they’re foes, they’ve been allies and they’re very interesting to me because I grew up reading The Avengers. They have powers that are visually exciting, different from the characters we’ve seen before so I’m excited to knock them against The Avengers and see what shakes loose.
Quicksilver’s been at the center of an industry scandal since director Bryan Singer revealed he’s cast a Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past, a FOX film, all the while Whedon’s been publicly discussing his inclusion in Avengers 2, a Marvel/Disney production. It’s a battle for film rights the lawyers haven’t yet begun, but when they do, there’s no telling what affect there’ll be on these films.
Obviously, Whedon’s made no change in his decision to include the twins, and it seems we’ll first see them squaring off against The Avengers before they team up, if they ever do. What do you think the role of the Maximoff twins will be? And is the whole FOX vs Marvel/Disney mess only going to complicate the production on these films as things move forward?
