The Wolf Among Us
There’s no question Telltale Games‘ second game based on a popular comic book series is another feather in their cap. The first episode of The Wolf Among Us was a bonafide hit (read our review) and its second episode will no doubt surpass it. Episode 2, “Smoke & Mirrors” is expected to drop sometime next week. Here’s its latest and surprisingly red banded trailer, (more…)
Fans are still reeling from the first installment of The Walking Dead Season 2, but Telltale Games is moving forward and preparing to release the second episode of their Fables inspired game, The Wolf Among Us. Having not played since its first episode launched back in October (Psst, review here) I cannot wait to get back on the streets of Fabletown, interrogating scumbags within an inch of their lives as the resident sheriff and sometimes werewolf, Bigby Wolf. Following up The Walking Dead would be no easy task, but from the moment I learned Telltale Games had chosen Vertigo and Bill Willingham‘s Fables as the inspiration for their next game I knew they couldn’t fail. Their choice of subject alone proves the company’s dedication to twisting and toying with typical gaming conventions even more so than their decision to make a Walking Dead game about more than killing zombies. The launch trailer reminding everyone the first episode of Telltale‘s latest game of choice and consequence, The Wolf Among Us, based on Vertigo’s Fables comic series, releases this Friday isn’t wholly different from the first trailer we saw a few weeks back.
But who cares!? This game looks incredible! Let’s watch. (more…)
Telltale Games blew us all away with their engaging game of choice and consequences set in the world of Robert Kirkman’s The Walk Dead. That game wasn’t only a huge hit, but went on to be crowned Game of the Year. Not too shabby for a game that focuses more so on storytelling and characters than hack ‘n’ slash, shoot-em-up gameplay.
Since then it was announced Telltale was looking to adapt another comic book property, Vertigo‘s and Bill Willingham‘s Fables. The series is a decidedly darker version of the “What if?” scenario where fairy tale characters are real and living as refugee’s in a NYC neighborhood, Fabletown. ABC’s Once Upon a Time it ain’t. The episodic game, The Wolf Among Us, stars Fabletown sheriff, Bigby Wolf (A.K.A. the big bad wolf) and, like The Walking Dead before it, will release in installments with the story outcome heavily affected by the player’s choices.
From the first few screenshots released it was obvious the comic would translate beautifully to the screen, keeping its moody atmosphere, and this latest trailer only goes further to prove this will be a great looking game. Check out the first trailer for The Wolf Among Us‘ first episode, “Faith“, expected to release later this year.
Not long ago we shared the news of Telltale Games’ second, comic book based game releasing later this year. Based on the Vertigo series, Fables, from Bill Willingham the game, The Wolf Among Us, follows Bigby Wolf on a murder investigation and will serve as a prequel series for the comic. This decision to make the game a prequel allows for it to be accessible for newcomers as well as long time fans.
In the latest issue of Game Informer they preview the game in great detail. Talking not only about the advancements they’ve made with their narrative games since The Walking Dead but what other characters from Fables we’ll meet in the game. For instance, Snow White, readers know her as a love interest of Bigby and in The Wolf Among Us we’ll see that relationship develop. Snow White will also play a role in how choice effects the outcome of the game as the player can choose whether or not to betray her trust.
Here’s a few screenshots they shared,
As you can see it has a very similar style to The Walking Dead, but the character design and colors are more in line with Fables.
If you want to learn all there is to know about The Wolf Among Us, like how the fighting style will differ from The Walking Dead, do go read Game Informer’s article; it is, if anything, very informative. Did you play Telltale’s The Walking Dead? Are you excited for their take on the Fables‘ universe?
After having much success adapting The Walking Dead into an episodic video game where your in game choices can have dire consequences on the story and game progression, Telltale is finally ready to reveal their next game based on another comic book property. We’ve known since 2011 they were developing a game based on Vertigo and Bill Willingham‘s Fables, a series that follows the often dangerous lives of fairytale characters living in a secret New York City neighborhood called Fabletown, but it was placed on the back burner while the company released The Walking Dead. A smart decision I’d say because what they’ve accomplished with The Walking Dead will only benefit this game.
Titled The Wolf Among Us, it will star Bigby Wolf, a.k.a. The Big Bad Wolf, as he tries to keep the true identities of these fairytale characters, like Mr. Toad and the Three Little Pigs, a secret. The game’s story will be a prequel to the events of the comics and is set to release this summer for Xbox 360, PC, Mac and PlayStation 3. Speaking with IGN, Telltale CEO Dan Connors said,
Developing The Wolf Among Us based on the Fables universe has allowed our studio to build upon all of the hallmarks of what makes our episodic series so engaging for players. Through an evolution of our approach to choice and consequence, we can further explore the complexity of each and every iconic character in a universe rich with untold history from the darkest sides of the storybooks.
Judging from the artwork they released I’m hoping this game has a noir-ish feel to it as that would really suit the dark and brooding character of Bigby. He’s basically Humphrey Bogart, but a werewolf.
What d’ya think? Will Fables make for as good a gaming experience as The Walking Dead?
