Think Geek

In what might equate to a slap-hands girl-fight in the nerdy business world, today video game retailer GameStop has bought GeekNet – ThinkGeek‘s parent company – even though GeekNet had previously agreed to be bought by fashion/pop-culture retailer Hot Topic.  The deal, as reported in a press release this morning on GameStop’s website, is for $20.00 per share, a sizable increase from the $17.50 per share that Hot Topic had offered.  The difference in price may have been done in order to give GeekNet enough funds to pay the termination fee they’ll owe to Hot Topic in order to void the first contract. GameStop says the deal has a “total equity value of approximately $140 million.”  (more…)

November 23rd is less than a week away, and in these 11 days leading to the Doctor Who 50th anniversary we here at Nerd Bastard’s want to share with you a few of our favorite Whovian things. What’s a fandom without merchandising? Ten years ago had you told me there’d be Doctor Who t-shirts, socks, robes, soap dispensers, coffee mugs, string lights, action figures, lunch boxes–I’d think you mad. Doctor Who has always had a strong fan following, the Fourth Doctor’s scarf was a big seller, but it was never popular enough to warrant the kind of merchandising your see from Star Trek and Stars Wars. That is, until now. (more…)

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

ABOVE: Alexia-Jean-Grey cosplaying as Black Widow. What a kick-ass cosplay, huh? Scarlett Johansson’s Widow from The Avengers looks like crap in comparison. Regardless, I’d let both Alexia and Scarlett interrogate me anytime.   [CBM]

While the flux-capacitor hasn’t been perfected, and we can’t help you fix any past holiday humbuggery, maybe we can help you get this holiday season off to a good start.

For the next 12 days (Dec 1st-12th), the staff of Nerd Bastards will be listing a few of their favorite nerdy things. Gadgets, doohickeys, thingamabobs and more – all sorts of  items that have been Nerd tested and Bastard approved.  Basically,  stuff you want, things you need, and everything you can’t have.

We hope you’ll  find some unique and nerdtastic gifts among our selections, and that they make their way under your tree, Menorah or Kwanzaa bush.

Hit the jump for Sarah Moran’s list of Nerdful things. Check back tomorrow for Regina Lizik’s list. To see archive of this feature, click HERE.

As nerds, we like to put a twist on almost everything. Which is why, sure, a frying pan is something every kitchen shouldn’t be without, but frying pans are boring. You need a set of pots and pans with sword hilts! Combat Kitchenware is a Kickstarter campaign and they’re goal has already been surpassed. You can still get a variety of pan sizes through donating either $27 for a handle kit to craft your own up to a $275 donation which would get you a customized handle on your pan.

ABOVE: Nerd confession time, like most red blooded American males I have always found the Playboy Mansion to be a mythical place of wonder and amazement. That doubled this morning when I saw Playboy Bunnies dressed up as The Avengers. The Black Widow one is a bit of a stretch though… [Bleeding Cool]

If there was ever a company who could call themselves the nerd superstore, it would be Think Geek. It’s nerdy, geeky stuff brought to you by nerdy, geeky folks. Started in 1995, Think Geek has grown into a thriving site with everything your little heart could wish for. You want your own sonic screwdriver, Think Geek’s got it. You want a Star Trek uniform fit for an infant, order it from Think Geek (but I’d shy away from a red shirt). Their exclusives are some of the most sought after geek merchandise on the web from the iCade (which, funny enough, began as an April Fool’s joke) to the Tauntaun sleeping bag. Basically, Think Geek has what you want. Period.

Of course, not everything will be in your price range. Most of their really, really, OMG I NEED IT NOW products can be $60, $80 or even $100! Let me tell ya, that can be hard for anyone to scrounge together. Especially when you work part-time and write freelance to make ends meet (Did this just get a little autobiographical?). But guess what, you don’t need to spend a fortune to buy cool shit from Think Geek. They have dozens of deals on loot and here’s a list of great gifts all for under $20.

So let’s think thrifty and share in the  holiday tradition of giving, nerdy style.

By now you might be tiring of the Muppets. I don’t really think that’s possible, so here’s a video of Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy answering some fan questions on Moviefone. You’ll be amazed by Miss Piggy’s impressive impressions! (The Mary Sue)

This is cosplay done wonderfully right. At Comikaze Expo this weekend a scene from Jurassic Park was reenacted on the con floor, the raptor chase with Muldoon in the jeep. Complete with Samuel L. Jackson’s severed arm.

As if it couldn’t get better, the tables were turned when the raptor got hold of the jeep. Clever girl.

The Doctor Who parody, Inspector Spacetime that appeared on Community this passed week, yeah, it already has a fast-growing fanbase. A fanbase surrounding a fake show. These are the things the internet was made for. To brush up on our new favorite meme check out io9.
