McFarlane Spawns Reboot With Jamie Foxx

There have been stories for years that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane wanted to do a reboot of the character on screen.  He made no secret of the fact that he wanted actor Jamie Foxx to take on the role of Al Simmons, a.k.a. SPAWN.  Foxx made no secret of the fact he wanted the role.  Today the casting of Foxx in the role was confirmed along with the detail that Blumhouse Productions will produce the film.

Yesterday, Todd McFarlane promised big news about Spawn and the movie he’s been trying to make for years that bears that character’s name. From the sounds of yesterday’s Facebook Live announcement, McFarlane was bursting at the seams about the news he had, understandable given the amount of time, effort and energy he’s invested, but you could tell that this was going to be a little bit more serious than “I’m starting a Kickstarter!” Indeed, McFarlane just announced with Kevin Smith at San Diego Comic Con that he’s teaming with Blumhouse Productions to bring Spawn back to the multiplex.  (more…)

It’s not on the official schedule, but there may be some major comic book movie news breaking at San Diego Comic Con later today. In fact, Todd McFarlane promised it. After talking around it for oh so many years, it seems there’s finally some forward momentum on the new Spawn movie. Based on the comic book that McFarlane launched in 1992, getting a new Spawn flick out into the world is something that the fan favourite comic creator has been trying to do for over 10 years, and with an announcement pending, it seems that he may actually get it done yet. Calgary Expo Todd McFarlane Spawn

25 years ago, a stalwart and bombastic general by the name of Todd McFarlane lead a revolution in the comicbook industry. Joined by his four colour comrades, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino and more, they charged the gates as champions of creator owned books. This past weekend Todd came home to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and one thing was clear, he hasn’t slowed down a bit.  (more…)

Everyone who loves the gritty, dark, and demented world of Spawn knows the 1997 Spawn movie wasn’t the best. Although it had its moments, true Spawn fans expected even grittier and darker and weren’t all that pleased with the John Leguizamo rendition of Clown either (he did his best, guys). Now, Todd McFarlane himself claims that the new reboot of the Spawn movie will definitely hold true to its original grit and give fans that dark, warped world they so desperately wanted all along. Way back in the day before superhero movies dominated the cinematic landscape, we occasionally had a few films surrounding comic book characters. During the 90’s when we were nursing our wounds from Batman and Robin and Steel, and just before we got Blade and the first X-Men film, there was a cinematic adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s Image Comics character Spawn. Starring Michael Jai White as the titular character and John Leguizamo and Martin Sheen as his enemies Jason Wynn and The Violator, the film tried to capture some of the excitement of the comic. While the comic book was successful, the film was not so well received and received a 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There was an R-Rated Director’s Cut released for the film and there was also an animated series on HBO (that was better received) released, but it seems like Spawn’s time had come and gone. With Superhero films bombarding Hollywood, now seems like the best time to relaunch Spawn and give it another big screen adaptation.

Interesting timing. Shortly after the record-breaking opening weekend for Deadpool, Todd McFarlane has appeared to tell us that he’s completed the shooting script for his rebooted Spawn movie. What do the two have in common? Well, when Spawn, based on the McFarlane comic book of the same name created in 1993, opened in theaters nearly 20 years ago, it was also a rare R-rated comic book movie. With Deadpool hitting box office gold at the multiplex, McFarlane clearly wants to strike while the proverbial iron is hot, so if you like dark, ultra-violent superhero movies, this news is definitely going to be for you. You hear the words “Todd McFarlane” and “Spawn” you might think that you’re about to get a vague and random update about the live-action Spawn movie reboot. Not today. Today, McFarlane is shedding light in a not-so vague way on the in-the-works Spawn animated series reboot. Yes, there is a new Spawn animated series coming. The original ran on HBO for three years between 1997 and 1999. It was a hard-R rated animated series, and perhaps much more representative of the style and tone of the McFarlane comic book than the 1997 movie ever was. But can lightening strike twice so far as Spawn animated shows are concerned? Well, the concept art release so far leans in the direction of a definite “yes.” (more…)

We were teased the other day with mysterious hints that there would be big news from Marvel coming out of The View today. Now we know what it’s all about. It seems that Thor has lost his mojo and his hammer after he becomes unworthy to hold the mighty Uru hammer. Details are sparse, but the big announcement was that a female character will be filling the gap and taking up Thor’s hammer and powers. (more…)
