Civil War II

In case you have been living under a rock, Marvel Comics has been heavily promoting their Civil War II comic event. This is the follow up to the original Civil War crossover which Captain America: Civil War is loosely based off of. This time, instead of Iron Man Vs Captain America, it is Iron Man vs Captain Marvel. Instead of a Superhuman Registration Act, the conflict is over a new super-powered Inhuman who has the ability to predict the future (including future crimes). Captain Marvel wants the new Inhuman to be able to profile future crimes and attacks before they happen, and Iron Man against it with the argument that people shouldn’t be punished before a crime is committed. Think Minority Report, but with Marvel’s superheroes.

From the moment he stepped into frame as Lt. Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man 2 and told Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark (and essentially moviegoers, as well) “It’s me and I’m here, so get over it and move on,” fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been 100% behind Don Cheadle as War Machine. He was great in Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3, and the worst part of his performance in Avengers: Age of Ultron is that it was all too brief. Now, fans are looking forward to seeing him in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and, according to Cheadle, Rhodey plays a “pivotal” role in the film. You can find out what he had to say recently at the Sundance Film Festival, but first a word of caution: While this article doesn’t contain any confirmed spoilers from Civil War, those wishing to remain completely oblivious to the film until they see it should stop reading now.

don cheadle iron patriot

Plenty of faces, new and old, have been confirmed for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. And while we know that Robert Downey, Jr. will be back, it’s still up in the air whether he’ll be donning his Iron Man suit. He did, after all, seem to swear off the whole super hero lifestyle at the end of Iron Man 3. But who could ever replace our beloved metal-plated Avenger? Perhaps with the official casting of Don Cheadle we have our answer. (more…)

warmachineThere’s lots of news in the wake of Marvel‘s release of Iron Man 3. Will Robert Downey Jr. be back for more, will there be an Iron Man 4, what other Marvel Superheroes will get a big screen treatment? Marvel’s President of Production, Kevin Feige, recently put a couple of those rumored about which heroes might get a stand alone movie to rest.

When asked by Collider if anyone at Marvel is currently developing or writing a Falcon of War Machine spinoff, Feige simply said:

“No.”

Now that just means that currently there are no plans for those two heroes, but perhaps as Marvel proceeds through Phase Two and into Phase Three some decisions could be made to bring those two characters to the big screen in their own rights.

Recently, Ms. Marvel, Blade, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Black Panther, and The Runaways have script development projects in the works at Marvel Studios. There’s no production dates for these yet, but scripts are being written (Runaways was already scripted by Iron Man 3‘s Drew Pearce), and concept art is in the works.

These would most likely come after the third Avengers movie, and until there is a release date or green-light announcement, keep your expectations grounded. These things have a way of getting side tracked until the real money starts getting pumped into the project.

Which of these would you like to see the most?

Expectations are riding high for Iron Man 3. It’s a franchise that began so strong with its first flick, kind of faltered with its second, then Iron Man was a smash in The Avengers, and we’re all awaiting how Tony Stark- err, Robert Downey, Jr. – Oh, who am I kidding!? They’re the same person! – can top it? In a few recent interviews, Don Cheadle, Rhodey a.k.a. War Machine a.k.a. maybe Iron Patriot, talked about the film’s tone and teased some “spoilers.”

Cheadle told E!,

The tone is there’s more of an existential journey that Tony’s on trying to come to grips with this thing that he created that is creating him, too. Who’s really in control? And the toll that it takes on his relationships. And then a lot of s–t blows up. Which is what you want in Iron Man 3.

Speaking with Enstarz about those high expectations,

I hope that it performs to those levels. We did a little piece of it at Comic-Con and people went crazy. The script is good. We’re doing a couple re-shoots next week, but I’m encouraged.

And some “spoiler” talk,

I’m not supposed to say that he kills Robert Downey Jr.’s character. Is that a spoiler? That would be a spoiler. You knew that was coming. You read the comic books. I will just say that the buddy relationship that these guys have gets tighter. The third act set piece for the big finale is bigger and badder. It’s just a lot more.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd. Guys, that’s only four months away!! Time to start getting pumped for another summer of blockbusters! It’s my favorite time of year.

I for one don’t give a shit about all that War Machine casting malarky from the Iron Man films, but some of you desperately lonely fucks get off on this Hollywood hogwash, so it’s my duty as a bastard to gratify your needs. Will rub and tug ya with all the nerd news and funny bits your heart desires, no matter how much of a pointless drivel it may be.  It’s what we do.

So, as most of you know, Terrance Howard played Colonel James Rhodes in Iron Man 1. He did a fairly good job. Nerd heads bobbed in approval. However, regardless of his awesome on-screen presence he was mysteriously fired from the franchise. The marvelous Don Cheadle took his place in the sequel. Apparently the fall-out was over some financial disputes. Some claimed Howard was being a Hollywood money whore, while others said Marvel was being a bully.  Well, now we have word from Terrance Howard himself on situation.

“Hollywood is a business. You cannot take it personally,” he said when looking back at how he was dropped from the successful Marvel Studios franchise after just the one movie back in 2008. “Iron Man and everything that happened with them taught me to not take anything personally.”

However, the actor is clearly still a little bitter (and perhaps understandable so) about the way in which the whole situation went down, as he details below.

“You put your heart in everything and you do good by people and you don’t have that returned to you. You do a three-picture deal with someone and they come to you after making 700, 800 million dollars and say, ‘We think the second one will be successful with or without you, so instead of the eight million we owe you, we’re going to give you one million and give you a half-hour to make a decision.’

“I just wanted what was in my contract.”

Personally I think that Don Cheadle was much better as Rhodey, but in all fairness, it sounds like Marvel treated Howard pretty badly.Actually, it just shows how racist they are. “You can replaced” basically means “Y’all look a like, nobody will notice”. Shame on you Marvel… shame on you.

In other news, Don Cheadle recently revealed that James “Rhodey” Rhodes will not appear in the upcoming Avengers film but did confirm that a writer has been hired to pen a War Machine spin off film.

“They’re developing it now, they’re working on that. I think they’ve hired a writer, so we’ll see how it goes. It would be a lot of fun,” Cheadle told MTV when approached about a War Machine film.

The Avengers opens May 4, 2012. A War Machine movie, should it go into production, would likely debut sometimes after that.
