Where’s Waldo

Untitled-3

Hey, remember Where’s Waldo? You’re school library probably had a ton of them, hours and hours of hide and seek goodness as you scour each page for a bespectacled beatnik in a striped red shirt and hat with a walking stick. Sometimes he’s with a dog and a woman that looks and dresses suspiciously like him, and you, the reader, are asked to find them too. Yeah, well it’s now going to be a movie. Many have tried to bring Where’s Waldo to the big screen before, but now the dynamic duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are going to try and find a way to make Waldo a movie. (more…)

In what may be either a very smart or very suicidal business move, Dreamworks Animation has just dropped a $150 million bid to grab up Classic Media and all its artistic properties.  CM is currently owner of the rights to such well-known names as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Dick Tracy, He-Man, Archie, Voltron, Gumby, Felix the Cat, Veggie Tales, Lassie, Where’s Waldo and the Lone Ranger.

At first glance, this would seem a bonanza of tried-and-true characters that could make Dreamworks a pile of cash.  The purchase, however, is a little more complicated than that, being that none of the titles carry with them their television or film rights.

Classic Media currently makes hundreds-of-millions by licensing these properties.  Dreamworks may be looking at holding on to the rights for the express purpose of renting them out later to other companies that wish to turn the titles into movies or television shows (and the subsequent toys or other marketing deals that inevitably follow).  Or they could possibly have some other purchases lined up for the future.  Either way, the company is dropping some big cash.

At the very least, this puts a spotlight on some old classic media and gives rise to the question of whether we may be looking at a new He-Man flick or a Voltron adaptation in the near future.

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut.

Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

The Interwebz is a great place for nerdy art and the like. A lot of the time it’s crazy things like seeing the aftermath of Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fisting goatsie, or an all furry orgy featuring Alf, Chewbacca and Cousin It. Hey, it’s the internet folks. There are also a lot of awesome acts of nerd art that we see on a daily basis, and we round them up for your viewing pleasure.

Where’s Waldo? On the Big Screen of Course

There have been many greats in the game of “hide and seek”: children,  the snitch from Harry Potter, Osama Bin Laden. None greater however, then Wally Waldo, better known as the beloved character of the Where’s Waldo children books. Each giant book contained double-page spread illustrations depicting dozens of crazy characters, with the single minded goal to find a guy wearing a red and white striped shirt and round, Harry Potter glasses. The original hipster.

Let’s be honest, Waldo is a pain in the ass to find, but when you do… it’s like you’ve hit the jackpot. Film studio MGM is hoping for a jackpot of it’s own, purchasing the rights to develop the children books into a live action film franchise.

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 07, 2011) – MGM’s President of Motion Picture Group Jonathan Glickman today announced that the studio has secured feature film rights to bring Classic Media’s Where’s Waldo?® to the big screen in a live-action family adventure.

Created by Martin Handford and first published in 1987, Where’s Waldo? is one of the most recognizable characters in the world and a pop-culture icon. A publishing phenomenon with more than 55 million books sold worldwide from New York to Sydney to London to Tokyo, Where’s Waldo books are available in more than thirty-eight countries and have been translated into more than thirty languages. Where’s Waldo has also been spotted in gaming, selling more than 4.6+ million Apps for iPhone and iPad.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the search for Waldo to the big screen. Along with our partners at Classic Media, we look forward to making a worldwide adventure that will appeal to Where’s Waldo? fans of all ages,” Glickman said.

“Waldo is the most searched-for character in the world,” said Eric Ellenbogen, co-CEO, Classic Media. “With thanks to MGM, fans everywhere will find Waldo in movie theaters with his motion picture debut.”

MGM’s Cassidy Lange, Vice President, Production, will oversee the project for the studio with Ellenbogen and Handford’s business partner Mike Gornall serving as Executive Producers.

I have high hopes for Waldo and his friends Wizard Whitebeard, twin sisters Wilma and Wenda and his dog Woof (who’ll most likely be cgi). It still questionable as to what could happen in a Where’s Waldo film, since all you did as a reader (there was no reading) was just look for Waldo.

Comics Alliance has come up with a great idea to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Marvel vs. DC crossover by commissioning an insanely action packed battle between Marvel and DC characters, with a few Amalgam characters thrown in for good measure. Ulises Farinas created this mind blowing mural that’s packed with hidden characters and items to find “Where’s Waldo” style.

Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to find the Invisible Woman, cleverly hidden somewhere in the mural by Ulises Farinas. No Joke, she’s in there somewhere. To enjoy the full effect of this piece of art I recommend you click through the jump to the high-res version to appreciate the level of detail involved, find all of the lost items on the checklist, and just bask in the pieces artistic glory.

Don’t ruin it for anyone else by commenting on where Invisible Woman is in the comments section, but do stop by and tell us how you did. Did you find it all? What was the hardest or the most cleverly hidden? How long did it take you?
