Willow

Ron Howard’s 1988’s Willow is a wonderful fantasy film. An old-fashioned medieval adventure imbued with with sorcerers, dwarfs, warriors, and fantastical creatures. There’s betrayal, redemption, action, and the scariest double headed monkey poop dragon you’ve ever seen.  The movie is just one exciting ride after the other. All-in-all , it’s a wonderfully weird piece of cinema that only the eighties could have produced.

A beloved staple from you childhood. You know what that means, right? Yep, revive the property and make it a potential franchise!

Is There a ‘Willow’ Sequel in Our Future?

Willow-Poster-560x389

Quick! What was your favorite action/fantasy adventure from the 80s starring Val Kilmer? If you said Willow, then you are correct, although Top Secret! would also have been an acceptable answer. Yes, this heart-warming, George Lucas-penned tale of a Nelwyn’s (basically a Hobbit) journey to become a sorcerer while protecting an orphaned infant from the evil Queen Bavmorda taught us all a little something about life, about love, and most importantly about ourselves. For thirty years, many of us have been hoping for a return for the mystical lands of Nockmaar and Nelwyn Valley. Fortunately for the trajectory of this article, director Ron Howard was recently on hand to talk about just that!

I seem to be writing about all manner of sequels this week: From brilliant ideas that will never happen, to big budget sci-fi sequels that will likely be buried under the avalanche of Star Wars hype…

Today, we’ve got ourselves a fictional sequel I know I desperately wish was more than just a clever comedy bit about two forgotten actors trying to regain some relevancy in Hollywood.

Below is the trailer for the series finale of Life’s Too Short–the semi-autobiographical HBO comedy series created by and starring Ricky Gervais and Warwick Davis. The show is apparently based around Davis’ daily trials and tribulations…I wish I could say more about it, but I don’t get HBO–looks awesome, though. The trailer features Davis and Willow co-star Val Kilmer attempting to pitch Willow 2 to investors.

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut.

Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

Would you like to watch the awesome lobby shootout scene from The Matrix synced with “Mambo #5?” Of course you do. In fact, I’m surprised how well these two mesh together. The Youtuber claims no editing was involved to make it work, so if we take him at his word, this is almost spooky. (TDW: Geek)

For the love of all that is holy, I wish this was just a rumor, but it has actually been confirmed that there will be a movie reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.  Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed that they are the ones developing this reboot along with Atlas Entertainment.  Charles Roven, who produced Batman Begins, is heading up the operation.  So far it seems like Joss Whedon has nothing to do with the reboot and the writer of the script is Whit Anderson who is relatively unknown in the business so far.

This is what Roven had to say for himself:

“Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

As a Buffy fan I can say that yes, there is an active fan base and maybe some of us were awaiting this character’s return to big screen.  Including me.  BUT, we were looking forward to seeing a Buffy movie made using the television characters, as a continuation of the show to wrap things up a la Sex In The City.  Not an entirely different perspective.  Why change something that obviously works?

I loved the Buffy movie when it first came out.  Come on, who didn’t love Paul Reubens as a cheesy vampire with the longest death scene ever?  But when the show came out I was a complete convert and I watched every single episode the NIGHT it aired.  (Except first season.  First season kinda sucked.  Pun intended.)  Buffy will not be the same without her motley crew of Giles, Willow, Xander, Spike and maybe sometimes Anya.  If this newbie writer plans to use those characters, they wont be the same without the actors who originally portrayed them.  Can you picture ANYONE else besides Alyson Hannigan playing Willow?  Please!

Anyone wanna start a petition with me?  Not that it would do any good, they’ll just rape my teen years with a huge strap-on and laugh while I cry about it, I suppose.  But at least so we can say we tried!?

It seems that every year in some magazine or on some show, we get the typical list of baddies from the 60’s, 70’s and so on. Usually they mention the cool regulars like Vader, the Emperor, or one of the guys who tries to off  James Bond. And that’s cool, those lists never get old. The nuances varying only slightly, as the leaves change colors and the snow begins to fall, then we realize another year has been stolen from our lives. So what if some of the lame, not so cool, or dare I say, shitty bad guys got their moment, however brief or insignificant? It might look something like this.

The Most Wanted Non-Existing Action Figures

spaceballs-figures1

With all the awesome toys being announced at NY Toy Fair (we’ll be putting together a best of list this weekend) 2010 is geared up to be one awesome year for action figure enthusists. Case in point. We’re finally getting action figures of Adult Swims The Venture Bros ( it’s about goddamn time). However, this is yet another year where toy companies have failed to announce some of nerd pop cultures most wanted toys. In recent years us nerds have been privileged to buy just about every character , in action figure form, from every nerd medium. Its been great but there are some no brainer toys that should have been made by now. A few months ago we compiled a list of the most wanted non-existing action figures. Sadly not one of these most wanted toys were announced at this years NY Toy Fair. We’ve decided to re-post this list as a request to the toy companies (you know who you are) to get on the ball and deliver these toys in 2011
