‘Pacific Rim’ WonderCon Footage Smashes Online

2_1920

Any lingering doubt you had about Pacific Rim maybe not being big or bold enough is about to go out the window. Shown originally at WonderCon earlier this month, Warner Bros. has uploaded the footage for us all to enjoy. And enjoy it you will. Giant robots. Fighting giant kaiju. And Idris Elba. What’s not to love?

I’m pretty damn impressed, are you? My jaw was gaping at the end. I mean, it swung an oil liner as if it were a baseball bat!

Pacific Rim opens July 12th.

CBS Let’s Us Look Over ‘Under the Dome’ for First Time

stephen-king-under-the-dome

It’s one of the most anticipated series’ premieres of the summer, if not the year. CBS’ Under the Dome, based on the novel by Stephen King, was discussed at a panel at WonderCon over the weekend, and now we’ve been given our first look at the show, as well as some behind the scenes insight from King himself.

What is Under the Dome? Adapted for TV by comic writer and Lost contributor Brian K. Vaughan, the series (and novel) follows the citizens of the small town of Chester’s Mill who become trapped behind a forcefield that surrounds their town, keeping them in and the rest of the world out. And before you say, “Homer will save them,” as been noted before, King started working on the novel in the 1980s and had returned to it over the years before it was finally published in 2009.

The series stars Rachelle Lefevre, Mike Vogel, Dean Norris, Britt Robertson, and Keith Harris. Click play to see the preview below.

Both ‘Evil Dead’ Franchises to Eventually Merge?

EVIL-DEAD_LILY-COLLINS

This weekend, at WonderCon AnaheimEvil Dead director Fede Alvarez and producer Bruce Campbell showed off some snazzy new footage from the reboot to an eager crowed. After which, the two took to the mics and fielded some questions. In the midst of all the fanfare, one fan brought up the possibility of both the original Evil Dead and this new franchise merging. The answer was quite surprising…

Bruce directed the question to Alvarez, who said it was dream to to see the two franchises eventually merge into some form of bloody entertainment. It wouldn’t be far fetched either, as fans of both iterations of the franchise have speculated the films take place in the same universe.

According to Fede, the plan would be to develop the sequel while Sam Raimi develops Army of Darkness 2 eventually merging both Mia, the hero of the Alvarez’s Evil Dead, and Ash’s stories together.

That in itself, sounds awesome. Something to which Campbell replied:

“I think seven is a nice number.”

Currently there is no sure fire confirmation in all of this, but it would be a welcome addition to the Evil Dead history having fresh blood working alongside Ash to destroy the Necronomicon. With Sam currently writing Army of Darkness 2 this summer and Fede’s work on this reboot any future sequel Ghost House Pictures or FilmDistrict has in mind could be the start of another trilogy of proper shock and awesome.

Trailer for ‘Superman vs The Elite’ Debuts, Special Screening This Friday at WonderCon

The next DC Animated feature, Superman vs The Elite is already on its way and today saw the debut of its first trailer. Damn, I feel like I only watched Justice League: DOOM yesterday. This film will loosely adapt the Superman story, “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?”, which is considered by many to be one of the ASuperman’s best. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!

I don’t know about this. I’ll buy it, watch it and review because I have with just about every DC Animated movie but I’m not wowed by this story. Not the same way I was for All-Star Superman.

George Newbern and David Kaufman‘s will return as  Superman and Jimmy Olsen, respectively. Lois Lane will be voiced by Pauley Perrette and Robin Atkin Downes is Manchester Black.

If you’re planning to be at WonderCon this weekend you can catch a screening Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Anaheim Convention Center Ballroom.

The screening will be followed by a panel featuring the award-winning writer of the original story for “Action Comics” #775, Joe Kelly; and voice actor Robin Atkin Downes (“Justice League: Doom”), who plays Elite leader Manchester Black. Say Hello to WonderCon 2012…In Anaheim!

WonderCon has been held in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987, but it look’s like that’s all about to change… for 2012 at least.

Due to the Moscone Center (host of WonderCon) undergoing renovations in 2012 it look’s like the largest comic book/pop culture con in northern America will be calling Anaheim home for 2012. Thankfully this will only be a temporary measure as Comic-Con International had issued a press release making the announcement.

As long as the renovations for Moscone center goes well, WonderCon will return to San Francisco area just in time for 2013. The only fear is that it could do so well in Anaheim that it might never come back and Bay geeks aren’t too pleased about it.

Here’s the official press release from Comic-Con International :
WonderCon to Be Held in Anaheim, CA, March 16-18, 2012

C2E2 and Wizard World to Accommodate Change

San Diego – WonderCon, part of Comic-Con International’s (CCI) family of conventions, today announced that the 2012 show will be held March 16-18, and Anaheim, California, will play host to the long-running comics and popular arts convention. San Francisco’s Moscone Center, WonderCon’s traditional venue, will undergo renovations in early 2012, leaving the 25-year-old show in the unenviable position of either being canceled or finding a new venue.

In a move to help alleviate an overcrowded calendar, ReedPop’s C2E2, which has been waiting to announce dates for its own show in March 2012, will now seek alternative dates while Wizard World has announced that it will postpone its April 2012 Anaheim show.

“It certainly was not our wish to move,” commented David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for the nonprofit event. “However, when faced with the prospect of canceling the show for a year or moving locations, after careful consideration we decided to keep WonderCon on the 2012 calendar at a venue that could accommodate our needs.”

“We fully understand the challenges of trying to secure dates at any venue, let alone one undergoing renovation,” said Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President of ReedPop. “In an effort to minimize the impact on exhibitors and attendees we are currently looking to shift C2E2 from our traditional March dates.”

Gareb Shamus, CEO of Wizard World offered a unique solution to offset any potential conflict for fans and exhibitors: “All of us who produce conventions know securing dates can often be a frustrating experience especially when you find yourself having to move to a new city.” Shamus continued, “Because of their long history, Wizard World has decided to accommodate WonderCon and postpone our April 2012 Anaheim show.”

“We appreciate the efforts of Lance and Gareb for going above and beyond in making the WonderCon transition more manageable,” said Glanzer.

Will There be a Tron 3? Pretty Much the Answer is YES.

Tron 3 or no Tron 3?  That tis’ the question.  At a recent appearance at WonderCon to help promote the dvd/blue ray release of Tron: Legacy (as if they it didn’t make enough in theaters) the cast and crew members talked or rather evaded talking about this pressing issue.  Whenever the topic came up they would utter the sly remark, “Well, if we make another one…”.

However, Disney has confirmed that director Joseph Kosinski along with his writing team of Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will be working on Tron 3. After all, Tron: Legacy was a success, despite popular belief. In fact, Joepsh Kosinski is now the highest-grossing first-time director of a live-action film in Hollywood history beating out J.J. Abrams’ Mission Impossible III. Tron: Legacy made $399 million world wide taking out Abrams’ $397.5 million for MI3. This is all before the DVD / blu-ray was released. Tron: Legacy was made for around $165 million bucks so it made a decent profit in theaters, made a ton of money off merch, and will make even more with the Blu-ray release. So naysayers, it’s a money maker.

So why all the coyness with the a third flick?! Why not just announce it already?  It seems to be that they want to build up the fan base for Tron even MORE before releasing another film.  Kosinksi explains this quite well when he comments on the animated Tron Uprising,

“Legacy played really well to people in their twenties and thirties, but it actually didn’t bring in kids. So we hope Uprising will bring a new generation of fans in the same way that Clone Wars has brought a new generation to Star Wars.

So basically, they’re taking a page out of Tranfsormers’ book and focusing on merchandising.  In other words, don’t be surprised if you start seeing McDonalds commercials feat. Tron action figures in Happy Meals sometime in the near future! Or maybe Burger King. They usually get the toys for the shit movies. YES, Tron: Legacy was shit, don’t even argue.

Wondercon Cosplay Compilation

When most people say the name WonderCon they use to think of it as just the younger brother of San Diego’s world famous Comic-Con. Back when San Francisco’s young convention started out it was just something to pass the time in the Bay-area until the grand-daddy of conventions came back around for the weekend. As WonderCon has begun to get into the convention circuit and grow faster then the Hulk getting angry, it has garnered quite a following of supports, but more importantly Cosplayers. What started out with an almost non-existent presence, has become a haven for people who like to dress up as their favorite fictional characters.

Thanks to Mark Day, a camera and some well done editing, he has compiled video compilation showing you as many cosplayers as he could at this year’s WonderCon. Watch it now below:

Star Trek II Script Writer Responds to Fans’ Criticisms

Star Trek 2 plot story

Roberto Orci was caught coming out of the Cowboys and Aliens panel at Wondercon by Coming Soon and gave these comments about incorporating some fan criticisms of the first Star Trek reboot movie into the sequel.

“Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain,” he explains, “So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, ‘Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.’ You start to incorporate people’s opinions… If it’s organic to the story and you find someone who doesn’t think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that’s maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point.”

[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody,” he adds, “and, because that was an origin story for ‘Star Trek,’ everyone had to come in at a certain point. Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they’re going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I’ll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says.”

Star Trek 2 (No subtitle yet) is expected to hit theater screens in July of 2012. The entire cast, including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto, are expected to reprise their roles.

Yeah, those fan criticisms were tough. That’s sarcasm for those of you in the South, (We don’t use it much down here below the Mason-Dixon line). I’ll be happy if they have engineering fix all those damn reflective glares on the bridge. It looked like the bridge crew was in a tanning booth. McCoy should have been yelling, “I’m a Doctor Dammit! Not an optometrist!”

My big problem was the whole Spock must be unfit for command story line and how it was handled. Putting Kirk down on an ice planet wasn’t enough to prove that Spock wasn’t firing on all cylinders? What, there isn’t a brig on the Enterprise? Having Kirk in the brig when the ship is attacked, escaping the brig due to damage from the fight to get to the bridge and relieve a floundering Spock would have been much better storytelling, and explained why Kirk is a natural fighting commander.

Oh well, they’re gonna do what they want to and what the Hollywood money people tell them and we will fill the theater seats and the movie will be a big hit.
“Make It So!”
