So…About That ‘Fables’ TV Series

I shouldn’t have to start this post with an explanation on what Fables is (’cause y’all should really know), but it’s a fairly super-uber popular fantasy comic-book series by Bill Willingham and Vertigo comics. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – Snow White, Prince Charming, the Big Bad Wolf (in human form)- who escaped from an invasion of their magical world to form a secret community in the heart of New York City. Fables, – in brief overview-  weaves together action-packed, gritty plots with a touch of sex, plenty of splattered gore, and plenty of quirky twists. It’s an essential nerd read.

Anyway, back in 2008 Vertigo’s Fables was to be translated to a live-action television series on ABC. Warner Bros. was to produce a 1 hour pilot written by Six Degrees’ Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner. I speak in the passed tense, because nothing has come of it since the announcement was made. What the deuce is going on? Well here is Bill Willingham himself to clear things up… sorta.

In an interview with io9, Bill Willingham briefly talked about any news he had on the chances of seeing the previously announced Fables TV series originally set to air on ABC in 2008:

None whatsoever. I am the last person to know about things like that. Through rumors of rumors of mistellings of legends, I understand that the new DC regime was very much interested in getting Fables going. The TV show that was prematurely announced is probably dead — don’t hold me to that, because I don’t know. Hopefully, I’ll know before it airs, but I’m kind of out of the loop.

Fables is one under-rated piece of work…a true cult brilliant scene. It would make a very, very cool and different television series , but with no known(if any) start date and no news from Warner Bros. or ABC we can not even be sure when or if we will see the comic series hit the silver screen.
